going to go to a nyc store at 730 am tom. which one would you wait at for a 32gb silver att?

5th ave or Grand central?

Grand Central. Fewer tourists. I'd get there at 6:30, though.

Are you buying device-only or do you need a contract? If the former, you can get a Verizon or T-Mobile model, as well. In any case, don't be surprised if they just have Space Gray and 64GB.

NYC and its population density means Apple ships a higher volume of devices here. I got my phone faster and easier here than I ever did in Dallas.

I walked into my local verizon store on launch day at 9:30 and walked out with a 32 gb grey phone. Not a chance you could do that in NYC.

What about the other stores?

Nobody is mentioning Soho or 14th Street. Any experiences with those stores?

The one store that seems to have more options is the one in Staten Island Mall. Technically, that is NYC. I know it is out of the way, but two friends walked with silver Verizon iPhones in the middle of the day.

I guess 25 minutes on a ferry plus a bus ride each way is too much for people.

I don't live in NYC anymore, but my guess is those stores are worth a shot. When I lived there, UWS was actually my closest store but I usually went to Grand Central. Both 5th Ave and UWS get hordes of tourists given their locations. Grand Central is in the tourist district, too, but for whatever reason, it is usually less crowded than either 5th Ave or UWS. Maybe because the MTA won't allow a big crowd to congregate.

Remember, while Meatpacking, SOHO, Greenwich Village, etc. do get their fair share of tourists, they don't get anywhere near the volume that Midtown gets (because of Times Square, Central Park, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building). SOHO and 14th St were a bit too inconvenient for me (I lived at the upper edge of the UWS), but for anyone visiting and staying in Midtown or Downtown they are easy to get to.

Actually, I got mine on UWS. Fairly painless and no hordes of tourists. (I would guess UWS is less of a tourist location than the others you listed based on my observations).

When did you go? My experience with UWS was usually on weekends it would be packed with tourists staying near Lincoln Center or Columbus Circle. To be fair, I did buy items from UWS and 5th Avenue occasionally, but once it opened GC was my favorite store by far.

Sigh paid a visit to gc and uws and both got nothing. Im afraid im too late for 5th ave. need to be at work in 2 hrs

got to the SoHo store at 6:45, at 7:15 I went back home as they only had at&t 64gb space gray. Almost everyone on the line left, so if you want this model go and get it.

Thx foe the heads up. Got work in an hour so ill stay in midtown. Hoping to get lucky at best buy when they open at 9. Supposedly union sq has space grey in stock if you wanted. Not sure if their stock tracker is correct

Btw went to 5th ave and they had nothing as well.

I went opening day, but after lunch because I was working.

Wow really? I stand corrected. Any idea when they ran out of phones?

By the time I got there I believe they were running low on selection. They only had 16 & 32 GB models of AT&T & Verizon in Space Gray. No idea how many of them they had left though.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. So they had NO phones or none of the model you wanted?

Are you looking for the 32GB or 64GB?

if anyone was wondering Union Sq mobile BB has the 32gb silver in stock. Looks liek a few BB may have it.

Confirmed! Just swapped my 16gb 5s for a 32gb 5s. Space gray AT&T. They have stock there! And are doing true 1st come 1st served.

If you showed up to almost any AT&T store at 7am you walked out with a phone, albeit a space grey one. My AT&T store's line at 8am had 15 people and the store received over 100 units.

I should have done that but instead I woke up at 3am to order but was back in bed at 3:15. Got my phone Wednesday.
