Full DVI is built into the MacBook Pro, with a DVI - VGA adapter included in the box.

Mini DVI is for iMacs and MacBooks

yeah i know, pjarvi said to buy a "mini-DVI cable for an external monitor" when MBPs use full DVI.

so if the external monitor has a full DVI cable like my cinema display you dont need to use the DVI-VGA adapter. and if the external monitor has a VGA cable you use the DVI-VGA adpater included with the macbook pros.

Welcome to the world of Apple

I'm moments away from ordering my very first Apple product :)
I can feel the jitters already.

I am getting a MBP 17", 2.4, with matte/hi-res display, and 200gb/7200rpm hd.
So far I have only added a modem and a printer.

What would you recommend as either necessary or worthy complements and/or components for my setup? (I mean hardware/accessories).
- extra keyboard?
- mouse (which one)?
- ????

thanks so much for your input.

Since you did not mention memory, I would go for a full 4G (but not from Apple - street price for two 2G SO-DIMMS is about $140). The DVI to video adapter is a nice item ($19). A good carrying case (and a sleeve if you want to use a non-notebook specific bag) is also a good purchase. The mighty mouse and new Apple keyboard are nice too. Oh, a spare power adapter (keep it in your case) is also a good idea The airline adapter is pretty useless with a 17" (marginal on a 15") due to the small trays on most airlines, and it does not work in the car either. iGo seems to be working on a combo ac/auto/air adapter tip, but has not released it yet. If you don't want strange (oil) marks on your screen, get a keyboard protector (I like the small dog leather one, but a piece of foam works fine too).

If you use a digital camera, a card reader is a good item to have. If you travel a lot, a short cat 5 cable is useful (hotel internet port). If you use the notebook for music, either a good set of desktop speakers or a set of noise canceling headphones are nice.

And lastly, if you do use (meaning take it places) your notebook (and even more so if it is mission critical for you), Apple Care is worth a lot in peace of mind (I bought the plan for all three of mine, an old ibook, a ti book, and now a macbook pro). The ibook got a new battery, the ti book got a logic board, a battery, a second logic board, and a new hinge, so I actually came out ahead..

Oh, since this is your first Mac, Robin Williams just release her Little MAC Book for Leopard - worth getting.

Enjoy and welcome to Apple

you bought a modem?

don't worry about a 7200 rpm drive. i have a 2.4, the 256mb video card, and the 160gb 7200 rpm hdd, and it is fine. warm to the touch sometimes, especially during virtual machine or game usage, but fine.

get the iskin protouch (keyboard cover), a set of applepeelz (amazing notebook scratch protector - applepeelz.com), and a carrying sleeve/full bag. and the extra magsafe is a good idea too.

Thanks again everyone for your replies and well wishes. I am just waiting for the goodies to arrive any day now.

you bought a modem?

Sounds funny or incomprehensible, huh? Yes, well not every corner of the globe has wireless or cable hookups. In some parts of the world where I will be traveling to I will have to use a modem if I want to access the internet. Doesn't that suck:rolleyes:
