This is absurd. Apple finally got it right with the iPhone 6 and 6s being universal and working on all carriers, and now they screw it up with the 7.

Why are they going backwards?
I think it has more to do with Verizon than it does Apple.

Verizon is fading out their CDMA networks because it's a limited and slower technology but it takes years to do so as 3G CDMA is still heavily used.

Couple reasons Apple may have decided to keep CDMA out of the GSM phones and have separate model phones:

1. CDMA hardware is known to draw more power thus a shorter battery life which is one of the biggest complaints from iPhone customers. Why have it in the AT&T and T-Mobile phones if it's not needed.

2. Increased cost due to more Qualcomm patent licenses for the CDMA hardware.

To be honest I think Apple is way ahead (as usual) of the game because iPhone sales have declined in the past couple years so these changes makes sense to maintain a strong balance sheet.

It's not absurd, CDMA is near end of life.

They aren't universal devices because Apple is making a transition from Qualcomm to Intel modems and Intel modems with CDMA weren't ready when the phone entered production. So, just like last year when they used both TSMC and Samsung for the A9 processors, this year the modems are mixed. Intel's universal modems were just within the last few weeks fully in production so next year they'll be back to being universal with all Intel modems. There's no arcane trickery involved, no conspiracies.

^ ditto, but in my opinion they should have just stuck to using the X12 in every device and commit to intel next year. Love the ideas a few posts up that it has to do with power consumption and licenses and other nonsense. Really? Did I miss where apple differentiated runtime based on cellular modem in the technical specifications?

CDMA is only a battery drain if it's in use. If the phone is on LTE then CDMA isn't a factor.
That is true CDMA usage would come from CDMA carriers in other countries when phones are used on non-AT&T / T-Mobile networks.

I disagree with the other poster regarding Apple going fully with Intel modems and ditching Qualcomm next year. Qualcomm holds ownership of the patents and licensing (over 200) for the CDMA technology. Intel would have to pay the licensing fees to Qualcomm and pass it on to Apple. Apple can pay these fee's directly themselves they don't need a middle-man and increased cost. Apple continues to pay the fee's but now on lesser phones slowly moving away from CDMA. Not to forget Verizon is Qualcomm's biggest customer...simply Qualcomm is not going anywhere soon.

Until CDMA is completely phased out I don't see Qualcomm going away unless all three (Apple, Intel, and Qualcomm) can agree on a win-win cost structure for all including iPhone customers.

I'm pretty sure two pulls on the same day count as one. In fact when shopping for a car or a mortgage it's recommended you have your credit ran at all the different places in the same week and each one only counts as a single pull if done within the same week.

I thought that too, but it depends on how you're applying for credit, what type of credit it is, and where that credit app goes once you sign the dotted line. For example, while applying solely for a Chase auto loan at an Audi dealer in Orlando, they "farmed out" my app to a bunch of different banks, each of whom did their own hard pull, and even though it was for the same loan they're listed separately and FICO/Equifax calls them out as negative factors. I found out later there was no way to avoid this, since it's an automated process, but next time I'll go to the bank directly and secure a loan so my score doesn't tank as a result. Hard inquiries stay on for two years and diminish in negative value over time, but this lesson sucked and my EQ score is still 50 points lower than EXP or TU.
