Use safari much? Or any browser for that matter?

Also, how long are you planning on keeping it? Apple's purposeful obsolescence is getting pretty painful.

Yeah...I use Mercury browser and, for me, there has been no problem thus far. So, I'd say that I am ok with 1GB of RAM for at least two years of ownership at which point I'd buy another iPad.

Hi,

I've had my iPad 2 for nearly three years now. It's served me well but I'm now looking to upgrade it. Would you say it's worth holding off buying the Air until the end of the year with the likelihood that the new ones will have the TouchID?

Is TouchID, assuming that it is added to the next iPad, important to you? I think that's the most important question.

Haha, I think it's more a case of having the latest model if I'm going to wait another 3years before upgrading again rather than TouchID on its own, I used that as an example (albeit a poor one).

I just upgraded from the 3 to the Air. I thought about waiting to see what the next model brought to the table, but I decided that my own wants were served well enough by getting the Air now rather than waiting an indeterminate amount of time to get what might be no more than an incremental upgrade.

IMHO - at this point, hold off.

Yup, I agree with that. When was the Air released, back in Sept-Oct '13? We are now into the 6-7 months of the life cycle. Buy if you absolutely need it. If not wait for Sept for the Air 2 and iOS 8.

I answered "Undecided", but it is really "more then likely". The reason?

Specs. Touch-ID is great on the iPhone 5s, but wouldn't make me get up and trade my current Mini (1st gen). It needs more RAM. I don't care what anyone says, the current lineup is RAM starved. 1GB is not enough. At least 2GB would be better, but Apple should put the 64-bit architecture to work addressing more RAM. Oh, and the 100% color gamma on the display. No reason not to add it this year Apple!

The poll is flawed.

I just replaced my original ipad with an ipad Air, and I expect the Air to also last me 4 years like the original one did. RAM? Don't care. Touch ID? Don't care. ipad Mini? Don't care.

I'm still using the original iPad around the house.

Well it always depends on the situation. If the model is older or taken out of circulation or closer to the end the warranty then it's possible depending on the management and the situation of your defective Apple product, but yes, I've had this work out for me a few times. Apple is usually happy to get your money, they just don't commonly replace your defective product with the latest model without paying extra unless they no longer have warranty replacements of the exact defective model.

Exactly what models did you have "upgraded"?

Really not sure why that's important which models I had upgraded. May I ask your reason for asking this and why you placed quotations around the word "upgraded"?

I placed quotations because getting the newest model by paying just the difference in price between that and the price your warranty replacement is worth could be viewed by some as getting an upgrade...as you are getting a better newer model. The same word can be used if you were to sell an older model yourself and buy a newer one only paying the price difference - an upgrade is an upgrade, no?

I asked which devices because the only device I have heard/seen this happening for in the past was for the iphone 4. Just interested what other devices this has happened with for you.

Oh okay, I didn't understand why you were asking. My 24" top of the line iMac was authorized to be warranty-replaced with a 27" Core i5. I asked if I could pay the difference for the top model and even BTO the upgraded GPU and they approved it immediately and took my credit card.

After 2+ years of ownership it began to give me multiple issues which resulted in another authorized warranty-replacement and once again Apple was going to give me the base line replacement so I asked if I could BTO the processor and GPU upgrade and they did it for me again without hassle.

Now my iPhone 4S was dropped to the ground and shattered. I went to the Apple store for a warranty replacement since I had the Applecare Plus. I paid the deductible but asked if I could upgrade to the iPhone 5S since it just came out. They said I could but I wasn't currently within my upgrade time with Sprint. So it just depends. It matters who you speak with at the Apple store or who the manager is.

I agree! It depends a lot on the person you deal with at the store and your overall atttitude too. You must have a nice way about you too. That always helps! :)

Like others, I will upgrade to iPad Air 2 if the RAM is doubled. Really, there's no reason they couldn't go to 4 GB RAM and then not have to upgrade it for a longer time. Amazon's low priced HDX's have 2 GB RAM for chrissakes and I expect the new version of that (coming in October-November most likely) to get even more. As someone who games a lot on my iPad, RAM is very important and I wish Apple would stop being so chintzy with it. If it wasn't for the fact that the Kindle HDX's app selection sucks, it would be my preferred tablet because the hardware and tablet design I find nicer than Apple's because it is incredibly light and makes the Air seem heavy by comparison.
