Thats true, what caught my eye with the dealer was that he offered my macbook, plus cash for a new one that I was looking for, the retina macbook.

I informed him i would consider his offer and of course left the kijiji ad up.

Do you think for what im offering and the like new condition the macbook is in a fair offer from your perspective at 1700?

For how much money you have invested in the machine I think its a fair price, but I doubt you will get that. I would not go below 1600 if it was me selling it.

Yes, but upgrades are always money in the trash can and can't be considered when reselling. You buy them to enjoy yourself, not to enhance value for the next owner. It doesn't matter if it's a car, a computer, or TV.

In the pre-owned market, upgrades will help sell a product faster, and that's all you can hope for. For example, last year a 8GB (2x4GB) RAM kit was $89. Today it's $39. So that $89 kit has no real resale value anymore -- maybe $20-25.

yes ive heard that many times with cars. u can have a car with all the bells nd whistles but they wont do much to value.

whats ur oopinion on this offer?

If you can afford the difference and want the rMBP, then go for it. Everyones values are different, regardless you are going to loose on the 2011 machine only you can judge if t`s acceptable. From a technical point there is little advantage, yes the rMBP is a much more advanced machine however it wont offer a huge improvement computationally.

I have a late 2011 2.4 i7 15" and i want a rMBP, i will just keep both as i have a use for two MBP, in general as others have stated upgrades are best kept away from unless you absolutely need them as all your doing is passing a nicer machine to the next owner, unless you plan to keep the machine well past it`s useful lifespan. It`s down to want and not need, same as me i could carry on with my 4.2 & 8.2 MBP`s and skip the 9.1

curious, what do you use 2 macbooks for?

Primary & secondary I work globally and we move around every two years or so, if a machine goes down it can be a real problem in some parts, having lived in some pretty remote locations. With two MBP`s i can just pick up on the secondary system and deal with the other system later.

Recently my Early 2008 MBP fans failed, admittedly this was expected (Middle East & Tropics). My 08 machine is now starting to struggle a little so a replacement is not too unreasonable, although I may try and squeeze another year out of it, and give Apple some time to tweak the rMBP.

In some respects the 2012 non Retina may just be one of the best systems Apple has ever produced; highest levels of performance coupled with a level of user expandability potentially 32Gb Ram in time, and two drives, frankly if Samsung`s 512Gb 830 series would drop as fast as the 256`s i would be looking at this path going for a 2.7 with HiRes display, later maxing out RAM and adding dual SSD over time and like my 08 MBP keeping it until it`s redundant.

Much depends on our next move, presently Mac`s are very well priced in Malaysia and we will move out this year, so buying new one makes sense for me.

Very nice. I have a Pioneer SX 434. Great receiver if you pair it with a decent turntable. Even mp3's sound sweeter coming through this

I wanted to try and see if i can haggle the dude to match the retina macbook pro for education pricing, whcih would bring it from 2229 to 2029.

which would mean i would only need to fork over...560 dollars... that would be more tempting lol

560 dollar loss over the course of a year, isn't that bad though. People will pick gripes but if you think about it and listen to the people saying wait til next year, your current '11 will lose another couple hundred dollars in value at least. Meaning if anything you will pay more.

Og MacBook pros will now lose more money per year on a resale, for the simple given fact that they aren't the "pretty one" anymore, they are old hat. Retinas will now hold the most value resale wise because consumers, don't typically care for specs as much as the, wow factor.

You take a 2012 mbp vs a 2012 rMBP with the exact same specs, and I guarantee the retina will sell for a higher price.

the retina macbook pro was higher to begin with lol

Who exactly is playing crossing guard? :D

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I'm not trying to be rude. First, I gave my opinion, then, I gave a pretty good source (Anandtech) as backup. I'm not saying it's the *only* opinion and I'm perfectly happy if people disagree. All I'm saying is that a lot of people (me included) think it's better to wait for a 2nd-gen MBPR if you already have a nice 2011 MBP.

----------

If he paid $2100 for it and is adding $760 for the MBPR = $2860 total.

The base MBPR costs $2199 (or $1999 with student discount). This means he will have paid $2860-$2199 = $661 to use his MBP for 1 year. That comes to about $55/month, which is a little expensive, depending on his update cycle

this was my first mac, i never really had a "upgrade" cycle. its obvious i was planing on keeping this for several years but, im tempted by the new retina macbook.

if u were in my situation would u do it?

i wanted to try and haggle him to give me student discount on the retina, so it would be my macbook (he valued as 1469) plus 560.

If you're looking to get the most 'bang for your buck,' don't do it. Keep your current MBP for 4 more years and then sell it and buy a new one at that time.

If you WANT the Retina, then figure out how much that luxury is worth to you!

The price he's offering you for the used Pro seems pretty decent, considering its not the newest model. These things literally lose 100 - ??? in value when new models get released.

Additionally, what Chupa said about add-ons is absolutely true. If you're going to resell and want the highest return, go for the base model without any frills.

Obviously, you couldn't have seen the Retina coming, but most of us that recycle our MacBooks every year or two will have an idea about when the new models are coming out. The idea is to sell yours off right before hand for the highest return.

Does this shop offer returns?

Check earlier in the thread where I said it was a good deal.

yep i saw it. i didnt really spend 1700 though, it was mroe like 2329 with taxes and upgrades and accesories ( i know i know they dont really count but thats what i spent lol)

so that minus 1469 would be 71.66 dollars a month last year for the mac :S

its a apple authorized reseller, they should offer a 14 day return policy, HOWEVER im not sure how if it would apply to a trade-in / buy. id rather sell it for cash then add cash ontop of that and buy off apple website (ive always had badluck buying stuff instore lol) but im not sure if people on kijiji are interested in my asking price.

ive actually sold a 2010 13inch macbook for near break even, onyl lost 50 bucks on a case, and a bit of taxes LOL and that was week before macbook came out in february of 2011.

if the shop matches the education discount for the retina macbook, it would be 1469 (value of my macbok they quoted) plus 560, which would be more tempting. so in reality, i spent 2329 plus 560 on a retina macbook , *smacks head* if i were to go that route.

would you take that offer?

It's not so much about what we would do, as what you think is the best way to spend your money. For me, I wouldn't take the deal, since anything over $500 represents a significant purchase, and you have to consider trade offs. Your current computer still works as well as it did before the retina came out, right? I missed the transition from CoreDuo to Core2Duo by one month on my last purchase (needed it for school, and was too lazy to walk to the computer lab), and even though I missed the update, the machine has served reliably this whole time. Use the money to take a vacation, save for retirement, or buy an iPad. Then when you need to upgrade, do it knowing that the machine will be even better than this first generation.
