But why did they want to change the name? I assumed it was because the "Power" in Powermac and Powerbook had been there the entire time Motorola had been supplying the processors. Since Motorola is no longer supplying the processors, it just makes sense that "Power" would no longer be a part of the product names.

cause, as i said, they wanted the word mac in all of their computers.

The most reasonable theory is tied to Apple's secrecy.

Apple built a new intel notebook, with the isight and other features that went to the MBP. They kept the name Powerbook to keep leaks minimized, and probably ran a few dozen of these intel powerbooks to send out for testing, thus the blue mobo. The serial number probably only shows up in apple corporate's intranet.

Once they were ready for production, plus motorola's attachment to powerbook, a new name came about.

Sorry, but I still don't see why you couldn't just do with it as you please. If Apple contacts eBay (of which there is a chance, albeit a slim one -- people sell prototype stuff there all the time), then the worst that happens is you're out the 5 or so bucks for the listing fee. They're not going to subpoena your address and send a strike team to your door to kill you and take the machine back....

he can do whatever he wants. no point in trying to change his view on things like this...

What ever happened with this?

Nothing...I still have the Powerbook. I've made a couple of calls to Apple but after 4 calls and always getting the same answer _ we have no idea what you have - I have given up. I suppose I'll hold onto it at least till September and then put it on ebay. Hopefully I'll have found someone who actually knows something by then

Just stumbled across this. Pretty neat. It's amusing to me that no one at apple will talk to you. You'd think with all the trouble they go to to take down prototype auctions and whatnot that they would at least talk to someone trying to talk to them.

Amazing isn't it. I bet you they would have that thing flagged within 4 days of me listing it but I can't get crap out of them no matter how hard I try just asking.

whats the situation now with the notebook?

I have the number of an engineer at Apple who is helping me, also his email.

You are dealing with front line geeks at the Apple Store and on the phone. Apple of course has knowledgeable people working for them, you just don't get in touch with them that often.

For everyone's information, the final revision to the Powerbook G4s were announced in mid October 2005. From my own research, they came with the UJ 846 Matshita dl superdrive. They were produced through May 2006, I believe. My previous 12" Powerbook G4 had a build date of March 2006.

Looks like to me you got one of the very first, if not THE first build of MBP. I think it is worth A LOT. Luke is a lucky kid.

Thanks for the info/help. I was talking to someone who "speculated" that M1ADP1,1 meant Model 1, Apple Development Prototype1,1 which kind of supports what you have suggested. I hate to ask, but you couldn't ask that engineer if they know anything about this could you?

Thanks regardless.

What if you called again and specifically said, "Hey, I was going to sell this weird Powerbook on Ebay, am I going to get nailed by you guys for it?" Maybe request some kind of written permission from them to sell it so if they attempt to pull it or get you flagged again, you can alert Ebay and Apple that you actually have permission.

I can assure you the logo is real. As you can see in the picture below, the letters are actually recessed into the bezel. So while the e may be a little of, it is off in a recessed bezel and while I might could believe someone faking the letters, I can't believe someone went through the trouble of building/recessing the bezel for the letters. BTW...the Macbook Pro logo is recessed the same way.

You can see how the gloss/reflective material inside the "e" and "r" do not cover the entire surface in their recessed portions. That would account for why the letters appear crooked when viewed at an angle as you are only seeing the incompleted reflection.

Did apple ever ship the powerbook with a glossy screen ? I only ever had matte on mine and can't recall when they started shifting units with glossy...

It's a strange frankenstein of a beast we have here :)

The problem would be finding someone who had the authority to sign off. I couldn't imagine anyone at the store level being foolish enough to sign off on something like that.

I have a friend who said he would list it but I've just decided to wait until Sept and then list it. If for no other reason than to see if I could "fish" someone out at Apple that could actually tell me what I have.

it's gotta be a prototype (or more likely and pre production run) notice 'engineering sample' on the super drive. Above that there is a sticker that says "EVT 2" i think. in all apples past prototype/developer machines, they've used this sticker. It means Evaluation & Testing unit , in this case no.2. These machines were sent out to software developers etc. Also the machine is identifying as, what was it? MDPA1 or something? sounds like a pre production developer model to me. hang on to mate or sell it for a lot of money. there's more places than ebay to sell if you're really worried. also it doesn't have to have a green or red logic board to be a prototype and especially not a pre production run machine or developer model. oh how i want that laptop now....

Well it's Sept and my ebay account is cleared up but I still don't know any more about the laptop now than when I first posted here. I even put a video up on youtube (albeit a terrible video) hoping someone in-the-know would stumble across it and post something insightful but nothing. I'm not in any hurry to do anything so I guess I'll just hang on to it - at least for a while.

Thanks for all the post/info. If I ever do learn anything concrete, I'll let you guys/gals know.

i like how most forum users, when they see something cool / odd, they try - as a first reaction - to prove that it's false / faked / photoshopped...
and use the most retarded of arguments to prove their claim...
it's like they can't take other people being cool (-er than them).
why can't our first reaction just be to congratulate the man for a nice rare find and his son Luke (please tell me you did a "Luke, I am your father" joke when he was born, :) )...
what is the world coming to?
anywho, congrats mate on the find and the addition to your family.
i'd say keep the mac - if you're that sort of person - but if you don't care just post it and ask for at least $2000 ;)
peace...
