Did anyone notice that the logic board is blue? Prototype units seem to have green or red. Blue is for the serial production. I don't know if it means anything, just to share thoughts..

Maybe there were some of these units that were first production runs? And for some reason apple decided to discontinue production even before they went on sale?

That would explain why the OP has one, it would be a lot harder keeping track of a larger run rather than a few, one-off prototypes.

I called the local Apple store yesterday and spoke with a manager who wasn;t really any help. She did give me a number to call and I spoke with 2 seperate persons at Apple but neither of them were of any help either. they just kept trying to look the serial number up and explain to me how Apple never made an Intel based powerbook:eek: Anyway, I thought I might try going into the Apple store with the laptop and try that again.

I don't get why you're bothering to contact Apple at all.

You bought the laptop. You own it. End of story. Why go out of your way just to risk getting a unique item taken away from you?

it doesn't surprise me that apple was trying to blow you off.
Most of the time you will get someone that cares and tries, but there are the few managers, geniuses and customer reps that think really highly of themselves and don't listen to what you are saysing..

Because I might want to post it to ebay and do not want Apple contacting ebay canceling the auction. If there is a problem with me selling it, I would rather know it before hand.

Just to point out that some of the people still thinking that there is something not quite right about the Powerbook letters maybe due to the fact it is missing the G4 letters after it which were on all the previous models.

I got one too. Someone must have had a clear out.

Sorry, but I still don't see why you couldn't just do with it as you please. If Apple contacts eBay (of which there is a chance, albeit a slim one -- people sell prototype stuff there all the time), then the worst that happens is you're out the 5 or so bucks for the listing fee. They're not going to subpoena your address and send a strike team to your door to kill you and take the machine back....

I'm not worried about Apple as much as ebay. I listed an iLife disk (sold for $11.95) about 9 months ago. Apple contacted ebay and had them cancel the auction. ebay then "tagged" my account as "out of compliance". It has been that way for 9 months now and will stay that way for another 3 months. I spoke to an ebay rep and they said Apple comes down hard on selling unauthorized hardware/software and they are the only company that can cause an account to be out of compliance for an entire year. Now I can still use my account and it really doesn't affect me but I do not know what would happen if Apple had another auction canceled with the account already out of compliance.

So you still have to wait three months to sell it, if you want to?

Why would you want to sell it? It's quite a capable machine. Isn't that the reason, you bought the machine first?

You could always use the Marketplace forum here, but you need to be here for at least sis months and/or (am not sure right now) have at least 250 posts.
And here you might get more money, since it's a Mac forum, with some collectors even, if you really wanna get rid of that prototype.

I don't have to wait but unless Apple were to tell me it's OK to sell, it would be the safest thing to do.

It is a capable machine but all I want/need is a machine that will work. If I can get a little more than an average 1.83 model, than I could use the difference to get something a little more capable.:) Secondly, I do want something I can use daily and I would hate to slowly damage or dent to laptop up given its the only one around - at least that I know of.

At this point, I really do not really think it is a prototype. It is way too functional for that. Plus, it has a serial number - albeit one that doesn't show up anywhere. I am more inclined to think that it was actually a development or pre-production unit. My "guess" is that Apple sent it out to some development house since that is what they do with new hardware. That could explain the Powerbook name. After all, if you are going to change the model name but don't anyone to know, the last thing you would want to do is ship all the development units out with the new name.

Again though, all the above is just a guess.

Even if it is only a pre production unit, its still a neat find, and somewhat rare. Its still a cool machine, thats for sure.
