I agree.

No need to be impatient, heavens forbid you have to wait a few days for your iPhone to be delivered.

Let those who want to order, order online and let those who want to wait be allowed to wait outside a brick-and-mortar store. By doing this you are essentially contributing to the (allegedly) shortage of iPhones and essentially taking an iPhone away from someone who otherwise would have been happy to have been able to get an iPhone at launch.

No need to be greedy and impatient.

Agreed. There is no need get one that you have no intention of keeping.

Apple actually encourages the mentality of the OP.

He is not to blame for being totally incapable of controlling his anxiety. Thats what Apple expects out of their customers.

He'll be there at the store come early Friday, collect a new iphone with 1000s of others who will fill the stores and perhaps even take other accessories as well.

Thats how Apple does business they dont care if the OP goes back a week later to return it because he got another online.

But will it work If I'm signing a new contract with AT&T? Keep full price phone but use it on the number I got when I signed a new contract online? But cancel the online order..

I think your best bet is your original plan if you have enough funds to cover the cost. If you order online and cancel later when you walk in store, there is a chance your upgrade would not reset in time, and you would still end up paying full price, but also miss out on your online order.

At least, if you do buy two on launch, you can always sell or return one of them.

But if I buy full price, I'd have to also buy a service plan along with it if I wanted to use it.

So it'd be full price + service plan

+ new 2 year contract + iPhone

Im wondering if I can order online with new 2 year contract, buy a new phone at full price, but use that phone (full price) on the contract I just signed, but return the iPhone thats associated with the order for the new AT&T contract.

There is no upgrade here. I'd be signing a new contract to AT&T as a new customer.

You shouldn't be worrying what others are doing. And please don't give guidance to others but only to yourself.

Hmmm... telling someone not to tell others what to do...

Doubtful, but possible. The trouble with your plan is that the phone ordered online may be tied to the line of service; might be tricky to return it without cancelling the service.

Even if someone has done this successfully before, or even if a cust svc rep says "sure you can do that" the proof in the pudding will be when you try it.

Best bet, if your credit allows for it, is open a new line of service via online order. Then if you're successful in-store open a second new line of service and cancel the other one returning the online ordered phone. Worst case, you return the in-store purchase and line of service.

1.) Preorder online a 3am.

2.) Go to Apple/AT&T store or wherever. Buy iPhone full price. Use iPhone you bought at full price... Return it once your preorder arrives.

Is this possible

When you pre-order it confirms your upgrade eligibility so when you actually go to the store, won't it say that you've already used your upgrade?
I know that people were complaining about that last year.
Placing the pre-order tells the computer that you've used your upgrade and people had to wait until the computer systems had all reset showing that the upgrade wasn't actually completed.

You should definitely do this, because if you don't have the new iPhone on launch day then you will be uncool and nobody will like you and you'll become a pariah in your home town. Everybody knows that popularity has nothing to do with having a personality and everything to do with owning stuff first.

Do it, and become the man everybody loves.

You dont understand. I NEED this phone. I need a phone. Im currently phoneless. (I sold my iPhone 5).

I'm baffled.

Why not keep the one from the store and cancel the online order? It won't ship THAT fast.

This... Cant you just not order one online and keep the one you get in store? Why do you need to order it, then buy one in store to keep you happy until your online order arrives.. What am I missing here?

Edit: My apologies, simply lost my cool on a sore subject for me and I shouldn't have. Do whatever you wish OP.

Congrats on posting this!!! More people should read this and realize that this is the attitude we all should have. Thank you...very sincerely!!! If someone wants to stand in the middle of their home and yell all the way to cupertino about how they dislike some apple feature...why do so many on here care?

I would think this make the most sense because you know if you get the store phone before the online store shipped

Exactly. Online order for full price phone. Go to store and try to use upgrade. If you get one, cancel online order. If you do not, try until you either find one for upgrade or your order arrives. If you find one and the order ships? Just return it. If you do not find one and order arrives? Take it to the store and tell them you want to exchange the full price for the upgrade price, using the same phone. This will work best if you order through your carrier.

Another option: order upgrade through carrier. Go to carrier store. Find phone on launch day. Have carrier store cancel online order and reset your eligibility in store. This only works with corporate carriers.

becaue if I cancel online order, I'm cancelling my new 2 year contract, and I would have paid $650 for an iPhone, not $200.

If you're happy with a 16GB in Space Grey I think you should just go to your local Target.
For both the 4S and the 5 launches, while the rest of the world was lined up outisde Apple or AT&T, my Target had no lines and phones available.

Did some thinking; new plan:

1.) Order online for AT&T at full price. (Apple.com) @12am TONIGHT.

2.) Go on the hunt in person - AT&T and Apple stores, try to find an iPhone there. Buy at contract price. If I cant find, keep looking until online order arrives. If i buy, cancel online order or return/resell.

3.) Online order arrives. Go to AT&T and say I bought a new iPhone for your carrier at full price. Sign new contract be credited difference in price for non-subsidized purchase compared to new contract $200 price.

Good?

I'm going to get up at 3am, place my order, and sit back and wait. Ahhh nice and relaxing. :)

Nope cause you might not manage to get a phone at the store.

The real answer is to get over it. Having the new phone in minute one of day one is a total first world problem. Order online and just wait for it. You aren't going to die cause you got it four or five days later. If your friends mock you for not having the cool new iPhone then just play the "I was going to get one right off but give how those launch shipments always have more issues cause they were rushed together" card.

Your plan is based on the assumption they will be selling full price phones at launch, they might not outside of those for TMobile and folks waiting to keep their Verizon unlimited data. You could be shot down at that point. You'd have to set up a second line to get a phone which could fail to be approved.

You sold your iPhone 5 without a backup plan, that's really on you.

If AT&T actually did that for you I would be shocked.
Not saying they won't......
Just saying it would shock me.

If I'm not mistaken I thought I'd read that you could preorder via the app and select in store pickup to reserve your phone that way. Please let me know if I'm wrong, but I believe it is an option this year.

Not the first few days. Too hectic, they turn on in store pickup about a week in.

My gosh! Give the OP a hard time ... I am on Tmobile paying full price ... I am doing this also ...

Full price 3:01 EST Apple order
Then Apple store or Tmobile in the morning

If I end up w both I have a reseller here in Atlanta that will give me a $50 premium
