It'll be nice; that goes without saying, since it's an Apple product. Apple wants you to feel special for buying their stuff, that's why they wrap even little things like a USB charger in clear plastic foil and so on.If the box isn't nice I just cant buy it.
It just might not be a very big, flashy box (for the non-edition collections). 9To5Mac had a quote in their news blurb:
Jony Ive said:We didnt want the packaging to be a sort of shorthand for value, where the box needs to be big and we have to include expensive materials. Weve always liked the idea that if we are heavy in our thinking, we can be much lighter in the implementation. So theres huge virtue, I think, in keeping the packaging small: at least, it is the right choice environmentally, its easier to move things around and you dont end up with your wardrobes full of large watch boxes that you dont use.
You can see where Apple's coming from here. They expect to ship quite a few of these things, and they use air freight, meaning bigger boxes need more (extremely expensive) airplanes, more fuel use, pollution and so on. There's also a certain elegance in small, neat packaging IMO, if done right, and Apple is good at doing it right, as are many Japanese companies as well, which is no coincidence, as Steve Jobs was originally inspired by Japanese wrapping traditions when setting the standard for the company's packaging.
The iPhone4 box is really compact, you can't make it much smaller than it already is, and there's little value in schlepping the same phone in a bigger box just because. The American tradition of "bigger is better" is pretty crappy overall...
