It sure sounds good, but maybe there are practical considerations. Getting any form of IPS at all was a good improvement. A year ago, I thought that IPS was getting pushed out of the market because of cost.

Brighter and cheaper sounds good, but I wonder about power consumption. The viewing angle on the current iPad is good, I wonder how much better this display can get.

As for power, what you can do is dial it down, though I wonder if it raises the bottom end brightness by 10% or so too. I rarely set a display above half way in its adjustment range because it doesn't improve anything and starts to get fatiguing because it's too bright. Sometimes I use devices in relative darkness and wish I could turn it down even more than the slider lets me.

As long as she's 10% brighter, 15% cheaper, and has improved viewing angle....lol.

haha, good one ;), but serious how big can these PLS be can they mass produce them for Apple's needs.

Now if she only had a off button I be all over that.:D

7" iPad in September for holiday book reader market. Better viewing angles would help. I don't think this is for the next update. Apple could easily release an update iPad in April and follow in September with a different form factor so not to alienate previous customers.

Very nice article, and I wouldn't doubt if that is the type of screen in the next iPad.

The only thing that surprised me in the article was "10% brighter", I can't imagine a brighter screen on my iPad, it's already blinding at 100%. I guess if you live by the ocean you can use it as a light signal, to talk to ships or something. :)

Perhaps they are pairing it with glass that has some kind of built in antiglare so they want it brighter to keep the colors popping etc.

The most valid part of this rumor is that it would seem very likely that Apple would improve the iPad display in some ways. Especially considering that retina display is unlikely, they would be keen on making some improvements where they can try to appeal to people who wanted a retina display.

If it's not this Samsung stuff, then I still expect the display to be much better than the current in terms of contrast, viewing angle, and color accuracy (and maybe anti-glare). It probably won't be a big feature but they don't want to miss an opportunity to talk about how "beautiful" the new display is. Try to downplay the fact that it's not a retina display.

I'm buying it.

We need a release date!!!!!

How much more fanboy can you be...

U don't care what it has? Really...

Uh . . . it's the next iPad. By APPLE. Automatically means it'll be a great product. The poster you insulted simply knows what to expect. You should take heed and make room on your credit card. ;)

I suspect "brighter" is not the proper word here — judging by the images, I think they really mean to say higher contrast with better saturation.

I just wish they would go LED backlit.
Ummm...

The high-resolution, 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS display on iPad is remarkably crisp and vivid.

Not sure what else you thought was lighting up the old screen, but where I come from, LEDs are used.

The "D" in "LCD" isn't "Display", it's "Diode". Not to nitpick or nothin'.

Actually the "D" in "LCD" is "Display" as in "Liquid Crystal Display". I think you might have been thinking along the lines of "LED" which is an acronym of "Light Emitting Diode".

I wish I hadn't heard of the whole iPad 3 rumor from DF's Gruber. I've been sharing an iPad with my wife for almost a year and was looking forward to getting the next one (she agreed to let me have the upgrade model). But this rumor will have me waiting another 7 months until we see what pans out in September. Ugh. The agony!

If you are out in the bush in Africa you have to watch for LED's there also.

"Large Elephant Droppings"

:D

All current Apple devices with screens are LED backlit. You didn't think they'd be using CCFLs, did you?

iOS devices have never been anything but LED lit.

People should really read their sources better.

It clearly states that Samsung will first be able to mass produce these by early next year (2012).

This doesn't make sense for iPad 2. How could you be within as little as 6 weeks from release and not have a screen supplier? And what of other "rumors" that have claimed the iPad 2 in production (which makes sense).?

Same here ... once I get the iPad2, I will hand my current one to the kids. I can't wait until later this year, four people fighting over one iPad is bad. If there is really an iPad3 coming out later this year, I might hand the iPad2 to my wife and get the iPad3 ... gosh, why do I always need to have the latest gadget? iPad1 does everything I need, but I still need to get the latest and greatest and I can't wait to see what they add on there which I don't miss right now, but can't do without after using it.

Maybe to the masses outside of Apple :) .... Doesn't matter to me too much if this display cames in iPad2/3/4/5/.... every update will be great and I don't dislike the current display.

I always love the "cheaper to produce" line, considering Apple will never lower their prices just because it's cheaper to make. Rub it in editors!
