Ok there are these little tab things next to the power supply wires looks like this

Thank you my good man, that did the trick alright.

OK got it up and running with a cloned copy of Leopard from my 1.25 MDD.
Things of note:
other then a very short burst of max fans on startup it runs very quiet, much quieter then my last 1.42 MDD which really roared.
Problems not noticed when I checked it out with the seller.....
the internal speaker is not working, external usb speakers work fine except no boot chime.
And the most annoying issue, I've read of this one on the forum, but the fix escapes me at the moment, each time I shut down I need to unplug the power cord momentarily before it will restart.
None of these would have been deal breakers, maybe have changed the selling price, but I'm happy with what I got even so.

i would try playing with the memory first. take them all out and then just try starting up with 1 at a time. if you plug headphones in, can you hear the chime (or warning beeps?)

Also did you end up getting the display and how much did it cosr
I got the MDD, 17" display, Apple keyboard and mouse for $90.
I've already solved the internal speaker problem, was a dead speaker so I just spliced in a spare MDD speaker from my junk box.
Now if only the startup issue was as simple.
BTW let it be known I have already installed a known-good pram battery.

Funny enough, I had the problem you describe on one of my MDDs(I think my first one) when I first bought it. I was told at the time that it was likely a PSU going out.

With that said, I've had the computer plugged in(but not consistently turned on) for roughly 3 months now, and the problem seems to have gone away.

I wish I could offer a better answer..

I appears, at least from what I can glean from the interwebs, that momentarily removing the power cord is a normal way for resetting the SMC of Apple desktop computers.
I found this on MacWorld.com...
"Desktop Macs: Disconnect the power cord (either from the Mac or from the AC outlet). Wait 15 seconds and plug it back in. Then wait another 5 seconds and turn the Mac back on."

So far, other then what appears to be a known issue with MDDs and the power-plug restart issue, this machine is the "boss".
It is fast and I can't believe just how quiet it is, this really surprises me because I have had a dual 1.42 MDD FW800 before and it was the notorious "wind-tunnel" model. Completely different physically, Aluminum heatsink instead of the copper in this unit. I do not know Apples methodology but whatever, there is no comparison whatsoever between what on the surface appear to be two identical models. In fact, noise was the very reason I parted the last one out for parts.
I could grow to love this unit, and as far as the power-plug-restart problem, I'll just leave it on and let it sleep or deal with having to cycle the power occasionally.

How does the mouse work? I've been pretty favorably impressed with the Macally products I've had.

Also, is it wired or wireless?

The mouse works just fine, tracking is smooth and positive, and it is wired.
But like many others, it has that indexed bumpity-bump scroll wheel I just can't stand, especially since I like inertial scrolling.
Exactly why I prefer the smooth scrolling of the mighty mouse or finger gestures of the magic mouse.

Something odd I just noticed, my Video card is reported as an ATI 9800 pro which it is, but OpenMark thinks it is an ATI 9700.
Is this normal behaviour?

Looking at your Device ID I suspect thats a PC 9700 thats been flashed with a 9800 ROM if you can post a Picture of the card it will confirm my suspicions (it will most likely have a black heatsink if its a R9700) dont be alarmed tho... flashing PC 9700s with a Modified Mac 9800 ROM is the way your meant to flash the card since the Mac 9700 ROM has issues with PC cards (the fact it cant be reduced and the PC card is VGA DVI and not DVI DVI)

It does in fact have the black heatsink, I goggled pictures of a 9700 and 9800 pro, and my card resembles the 9700 alright.

Yeah Thats what I figured... if anyones wondering The Radeon 9700 is the second fastest card you can fit into a cube (requires a VRM move IRC tho) the Fastest Cube card is a very rare R9800 pro that was made on a R9700 PCB.... (off topic but this is my 250th post Heh)

Nice find! I didn't realize there were different versions of the same computer. Does temperature monitor report the CPU temperature? Perhaps with the different heatsink it runs significantly cooler. If you run something like power fractal for a while do the fans spool up a lot?

Temperature Monitor

finds and reports 3 temperatures, CPU-board, and two HDDs.
Right now in my room, no AC and approx 75 degrees F the MDD idles and pretty much stays around 55 degrees C. Thats just doing every day stuff like email, we surfing youtube videos etc.

Interesting, thanks for the info. That's higher than I would've guessed. I wonder if fresh thermal compound would help any? How hot does the CPU get with power fractal? Maybe it's not worth a test.
