Let me ask you this.
Why should I as a phone buyer get the iPhone 8 for 700 when I can get the iPhone 7 for 550? Serious question it seems all the 8 has is wireless charging a faster processor. As for the processor, I don't think that matters as much in 2017 as it used too.

Yes the glass back is cool looking, but many of us put cases on the phone, especially if the back is slippery

It also has a better camera with AR capability IIRC. if you want to play ar games, the upgrade is necessary.

First day buyers are usually the ones who are very excited about new technology. They will obviously be more drawn to the X and they are willing to pay a bit more. But they would never buy something mid-cycle. And this is the time when the iPhone 8 will shine. It will have a steady buyer base through the whole year. And the X will probably decline fast after a while.

IMHO.

The AR stuff doesn't really impress me, and I think we may not really see anything worth using for a few more years. Couple that with my lack of game playing (for the most part), and so I don't see much of a difference - at least for me :)

There will be shades of the old 5C debate; the 8 will be more popular than 5C, but there will be some division

The real problem with the X is that supply will likely be extremely limited for months. I don't really see supply meeting demand (by which I mean you can walk into a store and buy your desired model with no lines or shortages) well into 2018.
And this is one reason why I like to wait for S model years, it's not the newest tech on the block that creates so much fervor. I still order at Midnight PST, but I'm almost-guaranteed to get the phone on launch.

I can wait.

What I find with apple is the iPhone slows down in time with iOS updates.
My 3 year old iPhone 6 is really quite laggy now, I've notice others here with same problem. Its got worse the last 12 months...so 24 to 36 month timeframe....
Which fits in will apple's timeframe to update iPhone i.e. 2 to 3 years
Maybe iPhone 8 will last a year more than 7 before lag occurs, do you think?
ps
hope all is well with your Jeep Wrangler.

The real question is what do you want? If you want 7 because of the price, that's fine. With few more hundred of dollars you get better processor(which you stated that it doesn't matter), better camera, charging(which you also mentioned), ar capability, and etc.. again, what is it that you want? Some people would want those features and if they think rationally, and could afford it, well... i'm not persuading anyone to get it or not to get it. I have iphone 6 plus still and i could get 7plus but it gave me hardware problems and so iphone 7 is a no for me. If i want iphone, i might as well buy ip8 plus.

I agree.
Its nice to have a faster processor but the Qi wireless charging doesnt interest me.
And the glass back makes it more fragile and way more expensive to fix/replace if the back breaks.
If you're on an i7 it doesnt make much sense upgrading and if you're looking to purchase the i7 price is great and will serve you great for a while.
