How awful, I can't imagine being that desperate for a phone that I'd actually wait in a massive queue like the ones pictured. As for why it seems to have flared up again this year, perhaps a lot of people value camera performance on their phones? Or finally the dam of people sticking with 6/6s/7 burst and people decided to try the new formfactor?

In Portland, Oregon the line wasn’t bad this morning around 8:15am. But around 11:30am it was around the side of the building. No clue what it’s like now though. iStocknow is still showing they have a lot of stock available but don’t know how accurate that is.

For the life of me I don’t understand why this can’t be like any other normal purchase. For walk ins, Have the entire stock on a shelf behind the counter - people pick what they want, pay and out. Why this individual reps greeting you walking you in and all the BS.

This way the whole stock could be sold out in an hour or so. Apple still can declare it’s sold out for the day.

Because people want help with setup. If they get home, have trouble activating the phone, and have to come back, Apple hasn’t really saved any time. And if you’re trading in a phone, you want to be sure the new phone is working before the old one is deactivated.

Yeah probably a combination of camera performance, those who waited a few years, the price drop of the iPhone 11, and also this year theres a feature which "other people" can tell you have the "newest and shiniest" Apple status symbol.. TRIPLE LENS, BABY  I'm not saying any of you cool guys and gals fall into these categories, Apple caters to a wide variety of customers. Almost forgot, but the iPhone 11 has some great color choices.

....also the largest year over year Battery life increase in iPhone history.

Alright, I take back what I said earlier. After lining up at 6:30 and been given a time to come back, there was a HUGE line to pick up my phone at the time i was given. I was at the store for about two hours between the line and getting things set up etc... This is probably Apple's biggest launch in years.

I went to the Christiana, DE store. Absolutely insane by 9am. The crazier part is they were turning away walk in customers and only serving to people who had reservations for new phones. Even with a reservation it was still at least an hour wait. Since it is a tax free, they were not doing regular walk ins for phone orders. I stopped by the mall again tonight and at 8:30pm there were at least 120+ people in line and the mall was set to close in 30 minutes.

I went to two Apple stores in Chicago this morning and it's madness!

This hasn't happened in years. Not to this extent at least. Could it be the lower starting price of the iPhone 11? There was so much negativity surrounding this year's iPhones, it's hard to believe the lines are this long.
It’s always the same online no matter what product you’re talking about, the whingers are always amplified the loudest.

I think part of it is that there is no staggered release this year so that is going to increase the lines especially compared to last year.

This morning when I got to my early pick up time it wasn't too crazy but there were probably 40 people in line.

Dang - did you leave or stay in the long lines? Is all DE tax free?

So I wanna buy an 11 tomorrow. Does Apple get shipments daily or is it gonna be a while till they get some in stock?

From my anecdotal observations, Apple retail stores get daily deliveries during launch week. Big stores probably get daily deliveries of all kinds of stock (Macs, iPads etc)

At the Metro Centre store in the UK I didn’t get there until like 9am (I think it opened at 8) and there was two queues.

One for people who has pre ordered and one for people who just turned up and I got seen in like half an hour.

I had an 8am reservation. Arrived at 7:40 with only 1 person in front of me in the reservation queue.
By 8am there were a further 6 or 7 in line with me and approximately 25 in the walk up queue.
I was out and back in the car by 8:20am

what day and time did you make an 8am reservation? a few days ago? or did you have to wake up at 6am? any tips?

Regents street in London was hectic at opening time. The system was very efficient though. If you wanted the phone you joined a queue to reserve one. Had the phone in my hand within 20 mins of deciding on the colour I wanted.

At Fashion Island in Newport Beach, CA, it took a little over and hour in the reservation line at 5PM. 20-25 people in the reservation line at all times. Maybe only 15-20 people in the walk-in line.
