After seeing this thread, I decided to take a trip down to Apple, because I did have a slight rattle, not bad, didn't care that much, I just wanted to see the truth. I get there, make an appointment, and show the Genius who then notices this sound is NOT supposed to be there at all. He then goes in back and checks to see if there's an official note on the rattle or not, comes out saying it's not an official problem warranting a replacement, but he decided to do a little test on his phone and mine, both of which rattle.

He comes out telling me this, but says "this is definitely not correct, hold on a second and someone will come and talk to you more." The guy who came back took a listen and described it as if there's a spring rattling around inside, and said 'According to Apple, this is a non-problem, but I really don't like the sound of this... you're getting a new (non refurb, as apparently, my local Apple Store hasn't gotten any shipped in yet) phone" (keep in mind, I didn't ask for one, I didn't even want one. I was completely fine with my current 3GS, but wanted to see if this "defect" rumor was true) and right when he said that, the first Genius I saw walked by and says "SWEET, THAT MEANS I GET ONE TOO, RIGHT?!" as to which, the Manager (who's a close friend of mine) walks by and goes "John, you're running a 3G and no AppleCare... That'll be 99.00. I'll ring you right up!" and John looked pissed off. ahahah

Anyway, to sum it up, the rattle is not supposed to be there, but it's also not warranting a replacement unless you have a Genius in a good mood.

I now have a brand new, week 29, rattle-free iPhone 3GS. Even though I didn't go there to replace, when something's offered like that, I couldn't pass it up. I did have a loose switch though, so I killed two birds with one stone :)

It seems like it might in fact be a defect of sorts, but I'm with others on not exchanging it. I do have a loose vibrate switch when in the silent position, but no other issues. I don't wanna risk getting a phone with a dead pixel, yellow screen, bad batt. etc...

I have a warranty and I'll wait until I have an issue that affects the functionality of my phone before I swap it. I'm OCD too, this one just doesn't bother me. I wish these threads would dissapear so I would forget about it.

It would be a defect if the rattle affected the phone's performance in any way. Unless you have a habit of tapping your phone while recording a message, this ain't a big problem...

<conjecture>Perhaps after more use the rattling component will degrade and cause a failure. But at present, I've seen no evidence of genuine rattle-related problems.</conjecture>

I got the replacement today and it still had the same rattle so i returned it. i'll keep the one i bought for now..

I am very confused with this whole thread....

Irrational people return things for no reason. All iPhone 3G S cameras have a component that is free floating. That piece rattles when the phone is tapped just the right way, or shaken. In normal use, we don't tap our phones or shake them, so it's not even noticeable. Because some people like to tap their phones and look for defects, some do find the rattling. The rattling does not affect functionality or usability. It can not be heard unless you listen for it and are in a quiet environment.

Now there's a split in iPhone consumers - those who find the rattle, and those who don't. All of them rattle, but since some people don't notice it and some people do, it appears to be a defect. Blogs then post bogus "news" articles about said "defect," causing those who found the rattling some alarm. Now everyone thinks it's a defect.

The same thing happened with the high pitched tone that comes out of the speaker just after locking an iPhone 3G S. Every iPhone 3G S makes the sound. You have to put the speaker right next to your ear to hear it. The frequency produced is 4410 Hz - exactly one tenth of the sampling frequency of the system audio files used by iPhones.

Most people don't notice it, because in normal use, you don't lock the phone and put the speaker in your ear. Again, stupid news blogs post bogus news of a defect that some phones produce and some phones don't produce. Their lack of knowledge is apparent when they say the sound is 16khz. It is not. Anyone with half a brain stem can tell that it's much lower than that.

So just like this guy - who thought his phone was defective, when it was not, got a replacement which had the same rattling sound - people went and demanded replacements for the high pitched sound problem, only to find that all iPhone 3G Ss have that problem.

I think I'm gonna' get one of those Tempur-Pedic pillows and fit it to my 3GS iPhone and eliminate the rattling noise....:p:p:p

Just an FYI -

I have had 5 iphone 3GS'. All 32GB Black. All brand new. They have all "rattled", were "warmer" and all had the "high pitched noise" after putting it to sleep.

hmmm

I never heard of rattling but my vibration stopped working, the switch on the side doesnt make it vibrate and settings>sounds>vibrate ON/OFF doesnt work. Thats the only problem i have had. Apple Geniuses gave me a new phone.

Apple representative confirmed that rattle is normal on 3GS

So I decided to call Apple Support about the rattle issue on our 3GS's and after being on the phone with them for like 30 min....I was told that the rattle seems normal and had something to do with the compass pin that is in our 3GS's and not the auto focus mechanism. I spoke to 2 different representative (the first one was a loyal MR reader as well:D) and the first rep got me connected to a product specialist who then stated that he noticed the rattle himself but then had to confirm the info with an engineer. He stated that the pin was not attached to the main board like everything else and that no matter if you are on the phone, texting or playing a game...the compass pin is always moving around and moving to NORTH no matter if the app is open or closed.
We ended the convo by him saying that unless the rattle becomes very noticeable and distracting to bring the phone to an genius rep and have them compare the phone to a new 3GS. Most of us know that even the replacement 3GS's have the exact same rattle.

I dont know if that make sence to anyone but I thought I would share this.

I just received my Iphone 3GS 32GB Black, it is a Week 28. It rattes when i tap on the back on the lens or 1/3 top area....but i would not say it is a defect...on the other hand it rattles even more due to the silent button when it is on the "silence off" (so ringing capable) position. When i old this button it rattles way way less...When i touch the button i feel it is a bit loose, there is some play...it is not the case at all on my 3G.

So what do you think? I believe i will return it...in addition i have the warm screen...when i read some do not have the warmer screen i will feel like i want to go for a repalcement and see if i get any luck getting one with a solid silent button plus a 3G like screen...

Thank you for making the cost of Apple products so high.

So I noticed that you unceremoniously changed the thread title. Much ado about nothing, eh, SchneiderMan?

From what I understand, most 3GS silent switches are like that. My 3GS is like that, and I am living with it. I could give a rats about a small rattle that doesn't impact functionality at all.

I had my 3GS replaced today...the silent switch does not rattle, the warm screen is now gone...it is actualy better than my 3G...the 3GS is super fast...Maybe i am lucky but i do not regret the pain i went through to exchange it this morning...
