Wow, you really believe this? You are so far off base with this statement that I just stopped laughing after ready your post 5 minutes ago. Man, thanks for that comedy brake, I really needed that.

Look above, someone already beat you to correcting him.

What's actually more interesting is that says he knows that diamond the only thing that can scratch glass but he also later acknowledges that sand can scratch glass as well. He either thinks that all sand has small bits of diamond in it or he forgot to mention that sand is harder than glass.

Not trying to be a smartass here...

Or I am aware that glass is made out of sand....You really didn't know that??? Yikes!

Wow you really read this thread? Your so off base with your flame that I just stopped rolling my eyes after 5 minutes of "ready" your post. Man thanks for the comedy " brake " (break?)....Really? Really????

No really?!?!? Good luck with your day job as flaming doesn't seem to be your *thang*.

I'm glad you do. But you should now add that there is more than one thing that can scratch glass: glass.

About the bit you emphasised, for clarity I should've added "he thinks that" before the bolded words to make:

Regardless sand is actually mostly quartz, which is itself harder than "glass". That's in inverted commas because I can't find the hardness rating of optical glass

Well here's the thing about what I said, I was apparently wrong. See the problem is that I have done very little research on the subject because I never cared. I posted my opinion on what I thought based on my experience and tid bits of research, but never qualified myself as an all knowing expert. I use a shield because it's peace of mind and I like the texture of it more than glass.

Yeah I know sand is mainly quartz. I just have never cared about this subject and still don't really care. Well not enough to get into a huge discussion about it. I have read though that tempered glass is stronger than steel, but I can't remember where. THAT seemed pretty interesting.

EDIT: I posted this before for a reason:

Ahh, your probably right. I think it's important to cover the glass regardless. The iphone is one of the few techy gadgets that actually has a decent resale value...No reason to not keep it in GOOD condition.

That was in response to Absolutc stating that many things can scratch glass.

I'm writing all my replies knowing that. It's just that one comment that started it all struck me as rather ignorant (as someone already pointed out, in far less gracious terms). Guess I'm only still here because I've got nothing better to do tonight.

You get the idea anyway, I'll leave it at that. Good evening.

That's what I do baby, I come in all slick like and drop a bomb of ignorance that totally blows everyone away. You're welcome internet. :D

No, but seriously, some subjects I research and know my chit and others I just have an opinion. I have watched a video of a brave gentleman doing a test on the iPhone 3GS. He used a razor blade and keys to try and scratch the glass. He was unable to do so on two attempts. It would SEEM to me that it would take something rare happening or a diamond to scratch it. I made my post under the assumption that it is more likely that a scratch would be caused by someone's diamond ring than from another source and I still believe that. Can other things scratch it as you have pointed out? I'm sure, but I think it's less likely. My wife's iPhone is naked and no scratches anywhere. She carries hers in her purse and with a 2 year old that constantly digs through there, I'm sure it's not exactly clean.

Had my iPhone for about 6 months and no scratches, i put a screen protector on 3 days ago and i have scratches everywhere, shows how much better the iPhone screen is and how pointless screen protectors are :D

Don't wear a diamond ring, but somehow my screen has a big scratch in it after placing it in my pocket w/ my keys.

I agree that it is VERY scratch resistant, but it's not 100%.

When I live in Laos there are a lot of beaches on the island I stay on. I must use a screen protecter in Laos as sand sure will scratch the phone badly. Even if I don't go to the beach left over sand in my clothes from washing still scratches it. Sounds primitive but people here still wash their clothes in the river leading to sediment being left in my clothes.

When I am back in the west I can leave it uncovered. It is pretty tough but only up till a point.

I've got one small scratch in mine, and I know exactly when it happened. I was playing hockey with some friends, and hip-checked a guy full bore with my iPhone in the same pocket as my keys. The bruise I got was much worse than the scratch my phone got.

Overall, I'm more than satisfied with how difficult it is to scratch an iPhone screen.
