an iSight upgrade

Mmmh. This smells an isight upgrade. I would think that it is time for Apple to come up with an even slicker isight with a smaller form factor and a higher resolution. One possibility could be that Apple would release new LCD displays with built-in isights, but there is still a big amount of mac user without built in isight that Apple has to support. So maybe they'll release a better isight.

The iSight is not available on the Swiss Apple Store as well. (Even though Switzerland is not part of the EU it might still have a connection to the EU case.)

Yes, they were pulled a while ago from the Europe store because of that but that doesn't explain why they are not on the US or Canadian store anymore.

Frederic

Europe banned them so they must be dangerous :) and we know how litigious you are over there.

No way. I can understand the drop of FireWire on iPods, but iSight???

too late...

I know I overpaid for it, I know ift has "toxic materials" but you know what... I love my iSight. If mine broke, I'd look for a used replacement. The fact that I can pan it around the room chasing my kd and dog, makes for great entertainment... the thing just works.

Arguments against a PC version of iChat are misguided.

Tell me, how is it more compelling to use a mac when you can't video chat with most of your contacts?

What we have seen is that the more friendly the mac becomes with the PC world, the more people are comfortable switching to macs. A PC version of iChat would unquestionably help move more macs.

When I read the iSight article here, I too thought Apple might be getting ready to introduce a USB webcam that will work on PC hardware with a Windows version of iChat. This could dovetail nicely with the iPhone (now re-dubbed ApplePhone?).

maybe there refreshing the isight to plug into the rumored iphone. creating a chance take advantage of leopard and to cast the hypnotic spell of ichat mobile.

This would be a cool idea...perhaps a form factor that could use something like the iPod dock interface, then build this interface into the iPod phone for use as a camera or to chat and built it into the top of a monitor upgrade. That would take care of people that don't want or need a camera phone and businesses that won't allow built in cameras in the monitors.

Where/what now?

I wanted to buy one for my girlfriend's parents so they can chat with their daughter. Now what should I get? What other webcams out there will work with iChat and then with iSight on her iMac?

Sorry, but I ment the external iSight. So many things now have USB interface, the great technology known as FireWire is becoming extinct. As I said I barely have spare USB ports, but FW is just sitting there doing nothing. Of course I occasionally connect my miniDV via FW and iPod before I got my 5G, but its nothing compared to the tons of USB cables on my desk

that would be nice. i don't own an external isight (just built-in), but maybe eventually i'd get one if they update them for my mac pro

Isight upgrade

I think apple will incorperate isight cameras into there new monitors that are coming out.

Just goes to show that the US will suffer at all costs! Screw toxic, we have toys!

Best iSight replacement is .. any good digital camcorder...

Well, the UniBrain FireWire camera makes a decent replacement for iSight, but I would insist that using a really good camcorder with IEEE 1394/FireWire/I-Link output straight to your Mac is a better quality picture nomatter what.. even my really old Digital-8 Sony TRV-120 has WAY better picture quality than either the UniBrain, or ANY iSight internal or external. May not have the resolution of the internal iSights (unsure how to know), but it definitely has truer color, and way better low-light characteristics than any web-cam.. and when it comes to low light (particularly with iSight internals like my MacBook has), iSight blows... heck, I can even sit in total darkness (night mode) and still do web-chat with the Sony camcorder ;)

Sure the iSight doesn't require a tri-pod and size and weight are more convenient for portability, but for a desktop setup, I give the winner to a tri-pod digicamcorder for best all-around picture.

Mwsf Prediction ! ! !

OK, now for my fun post ;) [[[[[xxxx evil laughter echos xxxx]]]]]

Apple's new iSight comes in iPod shuffle format.. clips onto anything, including your clothes.. and for the kicker, it's USB2 and will plug into any Mac or recent video-iPods for shooting digital video "on the run".. ... :)

Eat your heart out Bill..

The Zune 360 will follow with a heftier shoe-box size, half the resolution, incompatibility with Windows Movie Maker, DRMs for your own videos that require you to pay to see what you recorded, and best of all... it's only available for Zune players or XBox and won't even plug directly into a PC.

:p

Heh, liked this one :D So tr00!

Anyone notice what's happened to the prices of iSights elsewhere? Check out the price for a used iSight from the Amazon marketplace:

iSight Condition: Used-Like New $259.99

And on eBay, they seem to be going for more than the $149 list price, too. Check out these two finished auctions:

Auction 1
Auction 2

I know that I wouldn't go spending over $200 for something used that listed for $150 new. Sometimes people are just funny, I guess.

I guess so! I decided since I don't use my iSight much ... and since a newer version *might* be coming out soon, to get rid of mine and get a few bucks for it to put towards the new revision -- or Christmas shopping, whichever eats it first :)

Got e-mail notification thismorning that mine sold on Amazon for $100 MORE than what I paid for it--$229! If only I could be this lucky every time. Whoever thought that you could invest in Apple's products. Only owning it for three months and getting 177% return on investment. I'll take that!

So, I'm all set for the next revision ... with a little money in my pocket. Now off to do some last minute Christmas shopping

I was actually trying to buy one this weekend for myself for Xmas, and was really upset that it wasn't available.

Cripes!

They still are available!

Here

Same prices as new from Apple when they still had them!

::EDIT:: The text below is not directed at ctango.

I don't know how or why people are paying $100 over list for these. I guess people don't know how to research anymore!
