I think that they're making them smaller... judging by the iSights that come installed into the MacBook Family.

For those of you who are talking about the iSight built into the displays... how would that work... some displays sit up pretty high (especially the 30") and the camera would completely miss the person unless they moved the display or themselves. If they angled the camera downward, how do they know that everyone sits in the same exact spot? It's not like tilting a laptop display back an inch. I sit a couple of feet away from my display but, others may sit closer or whatever. It just doesn't make sense to have a birds eye view of the person.

iSight No Longer Available

Not only is the iSight no longer available, but APPLE has apparently crippled iChat with the latest update so tha video cameras no longer work. My G4 500 laptop worked fine with a Canon video camera, but after updating the software I now get a "Camera is in use by another program" message.
My G4 1.33 experiences the same issue. Both laptops still work with the iSight camera however.
Is this so that people must buy a new computer to use iChat?

I've flicked back through this thread but couldn't see it mentioned; The iSight has now gone from the Australian store too. I was hunting all across town for one last week and it was out of stock everywhere and they didn't know when they'd be back in. It also flicked from 5-7 days and 24 hours ship time this week and now it's gone completely.

Luckily (or not if they're about to update them!) I managed to bag one from eBay for a bit less.

A colleague was in one of the Chicago Apple stores recently and an employee there said they wouldn't be launching new ones as all the new models have them and that's the way they were going. Of course, since when has an Apple store employee known anything about what's down the pipleline ;)

I'm all for the built-in iSight, but to dump the external iSight, is just daft. It does not fit with Apple's 'creative' image at all.

How can you be creative with a webcam that's of poorer quality and stuck in one, awkward, position....

It seems to me that the built in iSight IS of poorer quality and stuck in one awkward position (on the display). The wired iSight doesn't have a fixed-focus lense, and you can move it around because of its swively neck. Plus, it's on a wire. You can move it as far as the wire will let you.
I'd love to see an update to the external iSight; I think it'd be unfair to alienate all of the current mac pro users who bought a nice shiny new display, only to find that they were outdated so soon and that they couldn't use iChat AV or FrontRow. I myself have a powerbook G4, and would love to see a refresh to the iSight so that I could use the apple remote with my computer. For now, I can just use the hack, but I can dream too...

Ah ha this is what i have been looking for, where would i locate such software?

Wait, I'm confused..what is the hack? The only Macs that have an IR sensor for the Apple Remote Control come with one... and the only way to get one is to buy one of those macs, non?

There are three common hacks that it seems you might be talking about:

1) Use other webcams (probably not, also already covered)
2) Use Front Row on a Mac that didn't come with it (tsk, tsk)
3) Use the Apple Remote for something other than Front Row -- here is a tool for that.

Anyway, if you could say more about what you want, we'd be happy to help. Unless you're trying to pirate Front Row. :p

Is there a high demand for the iSight right now? I have the opportunity to buy a couple of these. I was thinking that my supply might be able to meet others demand;) . Obviously I want to do this before the 9th.

If you are able to put it on eBay and sell it relatively quickly (e.g. next week), there's a fair chance you can sell it above cost.

I just sold mine for $204.98. It sold in one hour's time with Buy-it-Now!
HA! 2 and 1/2 years old, but had all original box, manuals & parts. :D

I can't believe it!

iSight selling for nearly double original retail price... I have to get mine up there like real fast to cash in! I have the box and everythign too!

I'd definitely do that if you can get it up there quick as Mr Krishnan says. They're going like hot cakes. I wonder if all those people (me included) will feel burned after MWSF! ;)

I think Apple will put the iSight for sale up again... I think it was because the lead problem they had in Europe, so they stopped making them... I'm sure they are going to sell the new ones... there are still a lot of people using iSights... you can't force everyone to buy a brand new computer just to use a built-in iSight.... and the external iSight is more flexible than the built-in ones

So why buy the overpriced ones on eBay... that's just unintelligent.... well, unless if you have too much money to donate...

The only problem is they've been unavailable from Apple in Europe since July 1st and only available in the US in limited quantities. It's been impossible to know when the new ones have been coming out, and the user experience/quality with any number of third party alternatives leaves a lot to be desired.

So, the only thing to do for many people was buy one on ebay. Saying that, paying twice the price at this particular moment in time - with MWSF around the corner - doesn't seem like too smart a move.

I just sold mine for more than $200, also. Nearly two years old but I kept all the original packaging.

Sweet.

This is the big issue for me. I might consider going the eBay route if nothing is announced at MWSF. Why noe have a little patience and maybe save some money?

I'm sure Apple will announce the new iSight.... maybe it's with a USB this time... like I posted before, an Apple salesman said that historically speaking, when Apple stopped selling something, it means that they are going to introduce a newer version of it.

I'm sure there are still a lot of people who need external iSights. You can't force everyone to buy a monitor with a cam in order to use a cam when they already their monitors. If they wanted to integrate ACD with an iSight, they should have stopped selling their ACDs.... that would make more sense.... otherwise, a lot of people are going to be pissed, especially just right after the holiday season, people got their new stuff, such as ACDs, and a couple of weeks later, it becomes old technology... that doesn't feel too good, does it?

They wouldn't stop selling the ACDs until the global inventory was at a minimum (this same rule could have figured with the iSights).

As for people being pissed that their new Christmas stuff would be out of date very quickly, historically speaking, Apple really doesn't give a **** about that (like most similar companies).

I didn't read the entire thread so sorry if this has already been posted.

Apple changed their site around. You can no longer access the iSight page (via the hardware page) as it redirects you to the store. The store now says 'iSight Accessories' not 'iSight'.

Something must be in the works. :)

Maybe the lack of apple equipment will encourage third party vendors to not suck this time...

Ha. Who am I kidding?

no external iSight = non Appleness

if they don't make a external iSight, what will the mac mini people do?? or the people who already have expensive monitors??
if apple is making iTv to give people the ability to use there existing tv screens, why would they take away the ability to use i sight on non isight equipped macs??

Only being able to use an isight if you buy a monitor doesn't seem like a very apple thing to do :(

WWDC Leopard features

I recently just re-watched the WWDC keynote, and noticed that one of the 10 features mentioned was "The complete package." As a refresher, he said that photoBooth and Front Row as well as iChat would get whole new updates, which would point to a new isight so that even G4 and G5 users without isights could use those apps efficiently. BUT, he said while talking about PhotoBooth that they were gonna expand the range of cameras it works with so that everyone could use it. What that sounds like to me is building in something like Ecamm's iChatUSBCam plug-in so that non-apple camera will work easily, since they won't sell one anymore.

Sorry for all the people, myself included, that were hoping for updates, but I'd put money on NO update.

You do have a good point...

He's so sneaky with his words...
