So your answer to the "is the 15" resolution to low?" question is:
no, cause grandparents like it.

Yes because it would be wonderful to have HD on a 15" and how lovely it would be staring at all of the tiny stuff. It would be a ton of fun having to zoom everything to make PDFs and previews readable as well.

I'm glad facetiousness finds you well this day, sir. Unfortunately, the actual relevance in this oh so amusing addition to this public discourse seems to be lacking.

the 15" late 2008 mbp screen is the most beautiful laptop screen I have ever used. The PC's dont even come close..their viewing angles are abysmal

That's probably because you've only looked at the cheap laptops they sell at best buy.

Check out the Dell Studio XPS 16, with the RGBLED 1920x1080 screen. Blows the MBP out of the water (and it's still less expensive). Other companies that use a high-res RGBLED screen are also amazing, but that's the one I've seen in person. Unfortunately, the only version of that Dell that they have at best buy is the low res, non-RGBLED version.

p.s. - the best apple laptop screen, IMO, is the 2009 17" high-res matte.

Yeah, but I've never been able to get a Dell laptop to last more than a year. Apple reliability isn't great, but the Dell's have been abysmal in that department.

Dell gave me a Precision M90 laptop two years ago to replace the XPS that had 15 catastrophic failures in the first year, which they agve me to replace the precious XPS that was just as bad. In only ever use the Precision to access corporate email, and after two years of that I can't play a game for 15 mins. before it overheats and shuts off.

Hmm... At work we've had great experience with Dell, both in terms of quality and warranty repairs when somehting happens. Of course, most of our customers buy their computers through a large corporation or government deal, but I can't imagine they use "the good parts" only for those machines ;)

By the way, our big loser is HP. We don't work with Apple machines :)

The guy that sits in the next cubicle also has a Dell Precision M90, just like mine. The graphics card on it fails just about every month, needing replacement. His is purchased through a large corporation contract.

Back on topic, while I think the display on the 15" is of a fine quality personally, I've been considering an upgrade to a 17 recently to gain real estate.

I work onsite with clients about every day,a nd having that killer resolution is becoming more and more appealing. I just worry about finding a replacement bag I like, I don't think my messenger bag can handle the 17" body.

Well enjoy complaining about something you can do nothing about. If you dont like it dont get it.

i think its a little too low. being stuck for years at 1440x900 sucks. im not sure if they offer 1680x1050 LED panels yet...only 17" 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 LED panels. hopefully in the next mbp refresh, apple will add a anti-glare and glossy option of 1680x1050 LED panels.

1920x1200

I've had a 1920x1200 display in my 15" MacBook Pro for about 4 months now and my eyes are killing me! I want my old 1440x900 back, too bad I broke it in the process of swapping this screen in :(

Using the zoom function under universal access looks terrible and so does switching the resolution to something lower.

Too bad OS X does not have 50% 100% 150% zoom like Windows 7 does that actually looks good.

Any nay sayers still doubting that Apple will boost the 15" resolution after the decent PPI increase on the iMacs?
iMac 20 was 99 ppi. The new 21.5 is 102 ppi. That's a pretty minimal increase.

The new 27" is 108 ppi, but there wasn't really a close counterpart previously. It sits in the middle of the 24" ACD and 30" ACD.

I don't really think you have any evidence.

Well, the 24" and 27" are very comparable in size. 24" was taller, 27" is several centimeters wider. Smaller chin led to comparable physical size. In that case, the PPI went up for 94 (24") to 108 (27"). Evidence enough?

I just hope they don't go 16:9 on the notebooks as well. I hate widescreen, and would have liked 4:3 options still.

No, I don't watch movies in fullscreen on my laptop, I work for a living ;p

Edit: Oh, and since I started this thread, I should mention that in the end, I went for the 17". Not a huge shock of course, but I would have much rather shaved of that pound and gotten a 1680x1050 15".

No, because the analogy doesn't hold. Comparing the 24" iMac to the 27" iMac is more like comparing the 15" and 17" MBP, and is not compelling evidence for a change in MBP 15" resolution. Hell, one could just as easily infer from the iMacs that Apple will eliminate the MBP 15" and just have the 13" and 17" models.
