Apple covers the screen with a scratch resistant coating. It works VERY well - you almost do not need a screen protector. I haven't used a screen protector on my ipod touch ever since I've owned it (Dec. 2007), and the screen looks flawless. I also keep it unprotected in my gym bag along with keys, books, and other gym crap.

I've had screen shields on mine but they all either dim the screen or make it less dynamic, I've since takem mine off, I purchased a nice Sena Leather snap case for mine, with that the screen stays scratch free I just have to wipe it from time to time for smudges..

Another commercial for the Invisible Shield. I don't take any of my iPod/iPhone/iTouches out of the box without it. Usually full body but always at least the screen. I don't know how much to believe the commercials, but they scratch it with a knife and there's no damage.

IMO the Invisible Shield can be hard to apply (especially something like the iPhone 3G's curved back) so I don't bother with the back just the screen. It's better than the cheap screen film that comes with cases and IMO it doesn't negatively affect screen clarity. It does make your device look a little "wet", glossy and darker. But my iPod Classic 160gb looks as good as the day I got it.

You don't say? You did notice Marcquito wrote "scratch-resistant coating", which very much does exist as millions of spectacles around the world benefit from this.

Someone above said to use brasso. DO NOT do this. Brasso is a solvent, and will damage the screen a lot.
