I’m a user of MBA Early 2015 A1466 128GB SSD. Recently I decided to upgrade a 500GB m.2 nvme SSD and I bought Sandisk m.2 ultra 3d 500GB. I also have right adapter to fit m.2 ssd properly. After I plug the new m.2 SSD there were no problem at all it worked perfctly but ever since I open my computer after 2-3 hours of sleep mode Im facing with “Your computer restarted because of a problem press a key or wait a few seconds mac” problem. Is there any way to solve it? Or anyone who faced with same issue due to same reasons?

wake from sleep issues are quite common amongst certain combinations of adapters and nvme SSDs

on my mb air 2017, I recently installed a 1TB Western Digital nvme ssd with a very cheap adapter card and did not run into any problems as of now

I have no experience using the Sandisk Ultra 3D 500GB NVMe M.2 storage drive but I can say using the Samsung 970 PRO 500GB NVMe M.2 storage drive does not give me any issues when I place my 2015 11inch MacBook Air into sleep mode and then waking it up several hours later. I have yet to get this dialog when waking up my laptop “Your computer restarted because of a problem press a key or wait a few seconds mac”.

I suspect that there may be some compatibility issues regarding the chipset on your NVMe storage drive and the Air logic board. Even though your computer is working normally when you are using it, it does not like going to sleep with this storage drive installed in your laptop and you end up with this waking up issue. The drawback of using the Samsung drive I am using is shorter battery life but it does not kill my battery life using this storage drive. Audit13 uses a different brand of storage drive which uses less power than the ones I prefer and perhaps he can put out what works best for him :)

Thanks for all helps but finally I solved the issue. First of all I wasn't have any sleep mode issue, the only problem was after a long sleep mode like 2-3 hours I have been seeing this: “Your computer restarted because of a problem press a key or wait a few seconds Mac”. I thought that it might be a firmware issue and I searched for latest update for my SSD then I found Sandisk Dashboard app but the app doesn't exist in macOS environment so I built windows 10 via BootCamp and I download the Sandisk Dashboard. As I assumed, the SSD hadn't the latest update so I updated and the problem solved.
I would like to add sth about the power consumption, MBA's battery cycle is 500 and im at last version of Big sur. With stock Apple SSD i was getting average 7-8 hours of battery usage. Right now with Sandisk SSD actually im aware that there is a bit decrasing of usage like 1 hour minus but i think its acceptable.

Glad you solved it. I spotted your post but haven't been able to get back in here till now. I knew some drives have firmware issues. Mine hasn't seemed to have issues like that for some reason. I have what you have except I have the ADATA 2TB drive, and I'm staying on Catalina. This machine has 275 cycles on battery. 93% capacity left. I haven't tested how much I can get out of it yet as I usually have it plugged in. Guess I need to bench mark that.

The SanDisk Ultra is the same as the WD (Western Digital) SN550 - SanDisk is a part of WD, they market some WD drives under their own name. The SN550 is a lot better known, however. So, if you're trying to trouble-shoot the SanDisk Ultra, pay attention to how folks have dealt with the SN550.

Also, the following thread is the one to follow for all such issues:
