It's ALWAYS better to update the Mac OS X, through Software Update, rather than the downloadable Combo Update. And if you are 'forced' to do it that way because your unit doesn't have Internet connection (which is rare in our days) then 'force' yourself to connect to it somehow and update through the Software Update! ;)

Why should that be? Apple releases both delta and combo updates, both should get you to the same destination, and you choose one or the other based on convenience.

For me, it is much more convenient to download the Combo update *once* and use that *one* download to upgrade all the Macs (5) in my household, and also use it to upgrade my parents-in-law's iMac that I manage, when they only have a 1GB/month download quota.

The positive in all this is that my last Time Machine backup worked perfectly and after a long restore process, I'm back up and running on 10.6.7 without any hitches.

Duff-Man says....nonsense, utter nonsense. I've used the combo update since the beginnings of 10.x.x as I am almost always updating multiple computers and the instances of any kind of problem are so rare as to be inconsequential....oh yeah!

I decided to reinstall SL,restore from Time Machine and try the combo updater again. It was fine this time. Sorry for those whose issues are more severe.

sound loss

I updated, and also experienced similar issues that others are reporting here. Log in screen frozen, not allowing me to enter password unless I closed the lid, and reopened, then it was still laggy.

Now having signed in, I have lost my sounds. Checked to see if the latest version had installed, and it hadn't, so downloading and trying again in the hope it fixes my lack of sound now.

OK, a quick update on my above post, after reinstalling the update, although took a while, all is back to normal now, and I have sound. Also checking the latest version, it has indeed been applied this time round. So if you experience similar to me, then download, and install again, leaving your Mac to do its thing, even though it looks worrying at the blue screen stage, it will complete.

Hey guys.

Well this is the first time an update has ever givin me hell.

I am on a 2009 aluminum iMac at home and it is just dog slow, and jacked up directly after this update. I tried the combo twice, and am now thinking just a TM restore.

Can I do a restore of the entire system without my SL disks that are not with me? I have repaired permissions, tried safe mode, checked disk etc. I am at a loss.

Takes about 30 or more minutes to boot and have everything up but slow on the desktop I rarely restore from TM, so I am not certain if I can do a full systemwide restore without a full install of SL.

My MBA was without a hitch. This stinks, no iTunes w my coffee.

Thanks all for any help.

Actually besides the 2 versions of 10,6,8 you can download manually:
Code:
- Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update (474.2 MB)
- Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo (1.09 GB)
Apple has one or more tailored updates that will be used through software update. The 10.6.8 that software update grabbed for my system was around 300 MBs. In the past, some of the tailored updates were problematical and you needed to fix the issue with one of the downloadable patches - usually the combo patch.

So saying "It's always better..." Is not a given. It's usually alright. Although my suggestion for those who need to update several machines, download the smaller point update instead of the combo update if that's all that is needed.

hey guys,

i was reading this and wondering: is there any downside to running software update? how come people use other methods of updates?

i've simply been using software update and it seems to have been working well. 10.6.8 gave me some slowness issues at first but it seems (hopefully) to be running quickly again.

I'm not trying to be a smart-ass, nor do I excuse the problems that the 10.6.8 Combo Update causes, but I noticed that all the people complaining on this thread about update issues, almost none of them have used the Mac OS X's Software Update...

I updated my mid-2010 27" iMac using software update and it hung on the blue screen after restarting showing the loading circle icon. I had to hold down power button to shut it down. Luckily it started back up, but was still on 10.6.7 so I tried it again using software update and it worked with no problem. I also have a mid-2009 13" macbook pro and 10.6.8 installed with no problems in it using software update.

So I just ran the update for 10.6.8 through Software Update. I went off to brush my teeth and get some water while it was running and when I returned it said that the update had failed for some unexpected reason and needed to be rebooted. Sat there doing nothing for 10 minutes so I powered it down and back up. Now I'm stuck at the gray Apple screen. No progress indicator. It just rebooted itself automatically after about 10 minutes and gets stuck in the exact same place.

Did I just blow up my Mac? Is there any way I can get back into the OS at all? Help!!

I tried to boot in to safe mode (using shift-command-v) and it gets to "Loading drivers..." and then hangs.

Egad, this is horrible.
