I literally have the EXACT same issue. iTunes will just lock up for 1-15 seconds when Im watching a movie or TV show, or even music (seemingly random) Same thing when I tested in Quicktime. I got the same Console message when I looked into it... I switched it for a new 1.5TB and its the same thing...

Is it possible that its a Seagate firmware issue? The error message looks like the drive is dumping its cache and not allowing data in or out for those few seconds. Also, I had a two 750GB RAID that didn't have this problem, so it must be something about these 1.5TB drives.

What firmware is your drive running? SD17?

Reformat and turn off journaling. It must be something with how the OS handles the journal files. The console error targets journaling. I wrote a ticket to Apple, it would not hurt if you do the same.

The issue does not happen on other OS's.

Ya same firmware,

Thanks a lot filman, its a minor inconvenience I guess. Ill just have it copy the files back to the 1.5TB over night :p

There's an issue with this drive which Seagate are currently investigating. Issues are being experienced with NAS devices, PCs and Macs.

I've just installed 4 of these in my ReadyNAS and don't have any issues currently but the Netgear site states:

"Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 - At this time the Seagate 1.5TB AS drives are being removed from the compatibility list. There appears to be a possible problem with streaming from these drives when write cache is enabled. We are working with Seagate to resolve this issue as soon as we can."

On Synology's site there are reports of problems too: http://www.synology.com/enu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=10746

Also, similar issues on NewEgg have been reported.

Ubuntu users also: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=933053

Hopefully Seagate will get this resolved asap and will likely involve a firmware upgrade.

Add DROBO to your list. I have four of them in the Drobo and it wants to reboot every few minutes.

The Drobo will be chugging along and then KATHUMP! It will shut down and reboot. I don't know if it's the drive or the Drobo or what.

Lol... Freudian slip, anyone?

I'll be damned... You've got me. Might be some fixation on Dick Advocaat. Have to visit a shrink asap.

BTW, you're sure you aren't making typo's / grammatical errors in all these foreign languages you know?

I must be lucky, I have four of these in a drobo and four in my mac pro(this is the server for managing video security so yes, I really do need that much!) and haven't had any issues :(

I came to this thread to post an update. Drobo replaced my power supply and now the Drobo is functioning well with four Seagate 1.5TB R17 drives.:D

Does anyone know if there has been an update on these drives? My Drobo just reported that one of them has "failed". I don't quite *believe* that but nonetheless Drobo isn't excited about working with it.

This is why warranties exist. Send it back. Don't play games when it comes to your data. Especially 1.5TB of data.

I'm having exactly the same issue. I only have my iTunes library on my 1.5TB Seagate drive - I first noticed the problem on my Apple TV (because I access my iTunes content more often through the Apple TV than directly from iTunes).

Does anyone know whether Seagate are likely to just replace the drive with another with newer firmware? Historically, what sort of timescale are the likely to get this resolved in? Their knowledgebase suggests they don't like users to upgrade the firmware themselves - so I'm guessing they'll just provide a new drive with the updated firmware. Also, if the firmware cannot be upgraded in OS X then they'll have to replace the drive anyway...

Incidentally - does Seagate have firmware issues with every new drive nowadays? When I bought my 1TB SATA drives I avoided Seagate because I'd read about firmware issues. Unfortunately I needed a 1.5TB and there wasn't an alternative.

Oh my god. I just had a response from someone at Seagate. I completed the details of my system, which included the fact it's an 8-core 2.8GHz Mac Pro, and their suggestion was to remove the jumper to limit throughput to 1.5Gb/s which will make the drive compatible with OLDER SYSTEMS.

How can the current Mac Pro be an older system? What crap customer support. I've tended to buy Western Digital and Hitachi drives in the past - my first dealings with Seagate are definitely NOT good.

Oh, and pasting someone elses name in the "Dear customer" part does not give a good impression either...

Well at least you got a response from Seagate! I never got a return phone call, e-mail, or trouble ticket.

I also managed to get banned from the forums for posting messages like "I wish Seagate would acknowledge that this is a lemon hard drive." I'm FINISHED with Seagate!

I fixed my problem with the Seagate 1.5TB drives, by the way! I returned all four of the pieces of **** to Newegg and bought four Western Digital 1TB Green drives. The Drobo works like a charm now!

What kind of problems are you having with your aTV?

I've got a pair 1.5s striped (internal SATA trays) and didn't have any problems (no studdering, system pause, etc) with them until I tried connecting via an aTV.

The aTV would see my machine but would hang/restart if I tried to connect and itunes would try to sync *forever* (tried w/2 different ones)

After that my comp would pause every 5+ mins or so, it made my roku 500 completely worthless too. Reinstalled system made no difference.

I've got my music library off of the pair of 1.5s and all is fine (with my comp) haven't tried the aTV yet (I need to get the videos off the 1.5s first). Roku worked fine too.

What kind of problems are you having with your aTV?

I'm having the same problems with the Apple TV as I'm having with iTunes - playback freezes periodically for about 15-20 seconds, and then continues as normal. I'm sure that yesterday evening it was happening on most songs, or at least every other song. When playing in iTunes directly, I monitored the Console reports and the time between kernel errors (flushing disk buffer) was around 15-20 minutes.

As far as I can tell they're related to the same issue - both problems started with the Seagate drive, I just noticed it first on the Apple TV because I listen to my content more from that than I do from iTunes.

Incidentally, I got a response from Seagate today saying they're busy working on the problem, they've got reports from customers with the same problems piling in, and that from past experience they thought it should be fixed in the next couple of weeks. They told me they would contact me once the problem had been solved.

I've got no idea what sort of solution Seagate will come up with - whether I download a driver, or whether I return the drive. If firmware upgrades require Windows, then I will insist on a replacement drive.

Does anyone know whether a firmware upgrade requires the drive to be reformatted? Unfortunately I don't have any spare HD space to temporarily move my library too. I'm scared to erase my slightly out of date backup (to do a new backup), in case it turns out that there is some form of data corruption on the Seagate drive.

Here is the error from Mac OS X's Console:

28/10/2008 00:32:39 kernel jnl: disk3s2: flushing fs disk buffer returned 0x5

It's strange (my issues seemed to start with aTV). I've seen the slow copying (in the past) but when I moved my library back to the prior discs, nice & quick.

I have yet to figure out why the aTVs don't want to work :(

I plan on reformatting without journaling on (others have said it fixes the issue) unless Seagate offers a fix before I get that far.

Turning journaling off is not a big concern for me, I back up the library on a regular basis.

So far, (looks for wood) no problems with corruption (at least on my setup)

Is it really necessary to reformat before turning journaling off? If you go to Disk Utility, choose your Volume (not drive) and then hold down the option key and select File, there's an option to Disable Journaling. I'm considering doing this as a temporary solution but not sure how this will work on a Drobo.

with 1.5 TB I would just make it the boot disk I mean are you really gonna ever use 1.5 TB of space probably not in a long time and overtime you have files you no longer need so you can delete them and open space.

The only reason I bought the 1.5TB drive was because my 1TB drive that contained my iTunes library became full (TV shows captured via a Firewire video capture device, movies imported from DVD, music in Apple Lossless) and I decided it was easier to manage my library on 1 drive rather than spread over a couple.

Have you considered something like NAS?

Might help to move the large data base (iTunes...) to an external source. You can expand as needed, and it's protected if the computer ever has any disastrous drive issue.

Just a thought. :)

Didn't know that option was there, Thanx :)

I'll try that first
