If I understand the deal correctly....it would be a good deal if you plan to keep the phone for 2 years. The money is spread into 24 months. My husband and I both upgrade each year. I have mine on the IUP and still looking one for him...

In the AT&T thread some knowledgeable folks are indicating that the only requirement is that you keep up the device payments in order to keep receiving the credits. So if you are on NEXT every year, you can still upgrade next year as planned and the credits will continue.

Yeh I think that's what people dont get about it. Good deal if you dont upgrade yearly, but credits fall off when you upgrade, so you really get 11 months or under $300. Better to privately sell at that point.

Except 'knowledgeable" people arent reading the terms and conditions which say if you pay off or upgrade credits stop.

People are guessing at best.

So when you upgrade after only a year, you really only get half of the credit. I have a 6s Plus that I could trade in but I am pretty sure i could sell it on CL for more than I would get out of it after only 1 year of credit from AT&T. Unless I am missing something?!
You're probably correct on that point. I took advantage of the deal for my wife and kids phones. They aren't phone geeks like me and most of the folks here lol. They keep the same phone until I hand them a new one. They could care less. I always buy my personal phone outright and sell it as soon as the unveiling of next years phone is announced. Still lose about 50% of the value in 12 months but I turn around and use the money from the sale to put toward the next edition

Hence why you come out roughly the same whether you pay full price and sell after a year vs. upgrading yearly though a program like the iPhone Upgrade Program, etc.

Same difference, you are just splitting the 50% over 12 months 0% interest. Makes no sense to shell it out up front at 0% interest.

For those asking and comparing 128gb at $540 + at cost shipping is the highest price I have it listed at on any website. This is $60 less than another poster in this thread for half the storage. I typically list previous year phones at ~$630 to offset fees. Of course the devices I list aren't linked to my cell account anymore, and have always been unlocked.

I have a few buying stipulations as a personal safe guard on various sites, such as one site has domestic shipping only (entire U.S.), another has local pickup only in public setting (for local listing sites). These types of things you may not see unless you look at the listing. This wouldn't explain the decrease in views.

Anyway, as far as last year, I sold a 6+ 64gb within days. The listing went up a little less than a week prior to 6s launch. Very similar conditions to what I'm offering this year. I did accidentally list the 2016 listing on one site as a 30 day listing. I changed it a few days later to 10 days.

Maybe the provider offerings and increase in storage is really hurting the for-sale-by-owner market.

Best time to sell an old device is 3 months before the next model. After the value plummets

That's not actually true, at least not in the UK. I've had an iPhone since the original and almost all of the times I've sold the old phone on to help pay for the new phone - generally you're going to get the same value a month or two before and a month or two after the release of the new iPhone. After that, it's a little more difficult to sell however I've never sold one of my past phones for any less than £450 (always had 32GB except for the last one, which was a 64GB 6S).

The good thing about the release of the iPhone is it's in the run up to Christmas, there will always be people looking for an iPhone in good condition for a present.

Oh! Another thing I've noticed as a seller is that finding your listing on the "selling" tab is more difficult and now takes a multi-step/page process. This isn't the user friendly atmosphere I remember, unless you're a power seller.

(I'm not here to sell my phone as I'm sure there are forum rules regulating this. I'm here to discuss.)

To those that sell your iPhones before/after upgrading, does this year seem more difficult? I've got a 128gb 6s listed on multiple sites well below the average selling price. I'm thinking price isn't the issue here, but rather visibility. Over 8 days, I've only had 49 view according to one site. Previous years I had hundreds at higher prices.

Has anyone had success this year? Or are people deciding not to buy used?

I would personally never buy a used iPhone and with IUP and the installment plans no point in taking that risk

A bit high as a year-old middle tier iPhone typically sells for $450 unlocked after new iPhone launch. The next higher storage capacity doesn't add that much value. In fact, you'd recoup more of your costs selling the base model iPhone (namely 16GB/32GB).

GOOD POINT. I'd expect there to be more desperate buyers needing a new phone.

I've haven't seen resale prices of good/near perfect condition previous year models that low other than top money back trade in sites. I realize the storage doesn't make a huge difference in selling price, but it does in buying price.

I wouldn't buy a used phone either as I like new models. I won't buy on the IUP either due to a lack of buying options.

This will be the first year I haven't made my money back when upgrading.

It's gotten lower in recent years and yes, it's that low if you wait too long after new iPhone debut. You could have easily gotten higher prices had you sold your iPhone before launch.

Prices typically take a steep dive right after launch when people rush to sell their old iPhones (making it a buyer market), then the resale values slowly creep up over 2-3 months or so before dropping off again.

I sold my son's 64GB 6 Plus for $350 last week. The new owner was sending it overseas. Sold my 6S Plus 64GB yesterday for $500. I use a service in Utah called KSL Classifieds, our version of Craigslist. Currently have my $870 cash purchased 128GB Matte Black 7 with a $50 full body Zagg shield on there for $800 but no buyers....literally losing $120 after 5 days but not one single text or call with an offer...everyone wants a Plus.
KSL Classifieds is a life saver. I've tried to deal with Craigslist, eBay, and others. You definitely get the highest selling price with the least amount of hassle

This listing was posted before launch and it's lower than current suggested listing price as of minutes ago. Actual resale value isn't the issue. Again, pointing to demand.

I sold my 6s plus 16gb for $460 a little before release day. The carrier finance programs do hurt resale. Also, buyers have to be cautious of iPhones that are on lease/payment plans that will not be paid. Phone will be locked and useless is what I understand.

I've had the best luck on Amazon, followed by craigslist, followed by ebay. Like others said, best to sell before the new iPhone is released. Sold my 6+ 16GB for $400 on Amazon today.

Do you have a link you can provide? I've been trying to list on Amazon for a week now. Every 6s listing shows this error:

"Thank you for your interest in Selling on Amazon
Sorry, this product is ineligible for Amazon Marketplace selling at this time."

I usually search and find the product and then there's a button that says "Have one to sell? Sell on Amazon"
You can also search for it in your seller account. Otherwise customer service is really good.
