had to uninstall, it made my rMBP laggy (Yosemite DP5)

Which menu items did you have turned on? Each item in iStat Menus is a separate process. This means running 1 is more efficient than running all 7. Although, even with 7 on, it shouldn’t cause any issues on a modern Mac. Lots of the features don’t get triggered until the dropdown menu is open.

It’s also possible to set the update frequency to Slow, if you want to make it even more efficient.

Been waiting for significant energy support. And it looks like you still get the same discount if you're on version 3---very generous of them.

Thank you! It’s great to be able to offer that. Being off the Mac App Store has lots of advantages!

Done, upgrade purchased. :D

(without first reading the article, that's how much i <3 iStat.)

Thanks! <3

I'm afraid you'll need to get iStat Notification Centre (http://bjango.com/mac/istatnotificationcenter/) to get that feature. iStat Menu is just for the menu bar.

Wouldn’t that be cool...

I'm thankful for the upgrade pricing. Definitely buying it when I get home :)

Cheers!

No, I'm speaking as a user who had to upgrade a bunch of apps with almost every major iOS and OS X release. I don't mind if the price would be a bit higher for a lifetime free upgrade.

So ... you want people to do work for you, but pay nothing (or very little).

Sounds about right.

Is it too much to ask that we get some value for the money? A re-skin and a couple throwaway new features are tough to swallow at $16, especially for an app that just takes up cpu cycles. I'm more than happy to buy apps for my Macintosh, even paying for new versions/upgrades, but at that price it better do something else. Fun apps like this are typically around $5, which is what iStat Menus should be selling for. There are certainly apps out there that are far more overpriced than this *cough*tweetbot*cough*$20 dollars for a twitter app*cough*, but then again others may see value at that price.

But if you like the app and are ok spending the money, feel free. People should be able to discuss opposing viewpoints without someone else coming along and railing against your opinion.

Heaven forbid we software developers try to make a living!!1 :p

Heaven forbid indeed. You should be happy we're allowing you to work at all. Now you want pay for it as well? What's next? You want DECENT pay? Pffft, kids these days...

It never existed. We might get one now, though, that there are actual NC widgets in Yosemite which developers will be able to make.

There was a dashboard widget, but it hasn't been updated in ages and I'm not sure if it works anymore.

BTW, anyone using this noticing that "apps using significant energy" aren't reporting the same thing as the OS X battery menu?

It still works; it still resides on my dashboard (and yes, I'm a dinosaur .. I still use Dashboard).

Reminds me of Blackadder: ...raving revolutionaries who think that just
because they do a day's work that somehow gives them the right to get
paid... Basically, it's a right old mess.

Paying AGAIN!? These annually upgrade costs for iOS and OS X apps make me really sick.

You think developers should work for free? What planet are you on?

This is almost a textbook example of a straw man.

He is not complaining about paying.
He doesn't think developers should work for free.
He is complaining about paying annually to upgrade.

Whether or not it is a valid complaint or not is another matter, but at least represent his views accurately.

Sounds like a lot of great info, but I really don't need this taking up space in my menu bar. WAY better fit in the Dashboard.

Yep, it works for the most part. I'm using the mini version of it on my Air and the full version on my Mac Mini. The only module that is broken is "processes". Other than that, it's great and I run it along with a handful of other useful things I want to see only occasionally.

I prefer Dashboard widgets because they're completely invisible until I need them. I hit ONE button on my keyboard and the HUD overlay comes up nicely right over the top of my existing workspace without disturbing anything, and then disappears immediately when I hit the button again. (BTW, always disable the option to make Dashboard a space)

It makes you sick that developers have to eat?
4 came out two years ago, and there's an upgrade price.

I agree and as a developer, I almost always pay to upgrade for apps that I use frequently. Having said that, $10 upgrade for an app that costs $16 normally (or $15 upgrade for $24 5-user family pack) seems a bit high.

At the end of the day, we are talking about a typical fast food lunch + coffee here, and I probably get more value out of iStat Menu than junk carb and caffeine, but I would like to see at least 50% off for loyal users.

Anyway, off to purchase the upgrade.

Well, sorry, but that's unrealistic. Especially at the pennies iOS apps go for.

Also, you aren't required to upgrade every time. Skipped version 3 of iStat because I didn't need its new features.

Except iStat4 doesn't work under Yosemite. I'm not looking for an upgrade, just hoping that they have bug fixes to ensure that ver4 continues to work with Yosemite.

They're working annually and putting out new versions. You don't always get new versions of an app for free. That's one of the huge downsides of the "app culture" of iOS. It's made a lot of people get this sense of entitlement.

I installed 4 in Yosemite beta and it worked seemingly well. I'm not sure if all features work perfectly but didn't find any problems during my test run so I believe they intend to support Yosemite in version 4 while there might currently be some bugs there.

I have combined view that doesn't work. I submitted some feedback and am hoping they get it fixed for the final release. Long as my current version works, I'm all good. No one should expect free upgrades.

Then don't buy it if you don't want it? I use ATMonitor, a free application similar to iStat Menus but not as feature-rich, because I don't need iStat Menus.

----------

Also, does this have an Dashboard or Notification Center option? I hate it in the menu bar.

Really, that's a good idea. I don't want stats in my menu bar constantly, just notifications for critical events: high temperature, high fan speed, app using 100% CPU, app hogging RAM, etc. The only reason I use menubar stats monitors is to make sure none of those things are happening.

It's not a straw man. The only reason they provide these updates is that people pay for them.

Does iStat Menus 3 still work with Yosemite?

I never upgraded from iStat 3 because I'm really happy with it, it still works, and doesn't really give me anything else I need or want. If it still works in Yosemite I'd just as soon keep using it. If not $10 is worth it to keep going.

I supposed I might have to try this on the beta myself but I was hoping someone may have already figured it out.

iStat 4.22 works with Yosemite. You don't need to upgrade unless you want to, which it looks like you don't. (Well, I think it works. I haven't tried dark mode, but they added a dark mode option to the iStat menus themselves, so maybe they also took care to make it work with the icons.)

Updated as soon as I saw it here! 3 was great, 4 was awesome, and the new features of 5 are really nice already! Great update!
