iStat Menus 5 Brings Refreshed Look, OS X Yosemite Support, More Data

There is indeed an SMC bug on Haswell Macbook Pros (at least the 13" retina).

http://youtu.be/gBHHhA-NdlI

The sensors (and fan controls) are only accessible to the system when 1) the CPU is under heavy load or 2) the magsafe is plugged in

Upgraded today (to test build 564), some notes:

1. Those tiny grey characters in menus (not menubar but in menus after I open them) are much harder to read than in previous version (11" MBA)

I’m not sure if you saw the comparison above?

iStat Menus 4 is on top. iStat Menus 5 below. The menubar height changed in Yosemite, so centering them has become much harder. We are definitely looking into this though. Maybe there’s a better way.

2. When I hide some network connection from the Network menu (Hide This Connection) - how do I unhide it later? EDIT: Got it, in main menu: Stats / Reset Network Filtering restores them all.

Yeah. For anyone else reading along, here’s a screenshot of it. :)

3. Initially had some quirky behaviour when adjusting the Sensors config that I use in Combined mode. I added hard drive temperature to the menubar, didn't like the result so removed it, but the temperature remained in the menubar and since then it was impossible to add or remove anything from the Sensors menubar item. After quitting and relaunching I managed to get around that.

Thanks for letting us know. We still have a few tweaks to make. Working hard on iStat Menus 5.0.1 right now. :)

Yeah, we’ve seen that one before. At the moment, we suspect it’s an OS or SMC issue.

Yes, saw that and V4 definitely looks better so I hope you'll manage to get V5 much closer to that, or even right there... even for the price of losing the perfect centering.
In the worst case an user configurable option for that would be welcome so one could chose what he/she prefers.

What happened to the DC In power sensor? Back in v3 (the version I upgraded from) it was there, here there's just the current reading without a corresponding voltage reading. Was it inaccurate?

Here’s what is in the current 5.0.1 beta:

I'm not sure what happened to that specific sensor, but we do reassess them regularly to make sure we as many as we can, but only show what we think is accurate.

Hi, just wondered if there is any update on when 5.0.1 might be released? Loving the new version but not overly keen on the current menubar labels... :)

Hey, is there a way to increase the detail on the combined view? I remember I was able to do this in iStatMenus 4 e.g. I'd like to be able to see the top % processes in the combined view without having to hover my mouse over the "CPU" bar graph.

Thank you so much! I hope it serves you well. :)

We're a very lean company (everyone works remotely).

Due to the specific nature of iStat Menus, we need to do testing on each model of hardware. This sometimes means we borrow friends' Macs, but often it means buying and reselling Macs.

Is ~$10 every two years (~$5 a year) a lot for something you might use every day? That decision is entirely up to you. We want to make sure iStat Menus is the best app of its kind, and that means constant maintenance. We really don't mind if you skip major versions (~$2.50 a year).

If we were on the Mac App Store, we couldn't offer update pricing at all. We also couldn't offer a trial. And we couldn't offer refunds. We're doing everything we can to make sure the only people who buy our software are those who like it.

I completely understand why you may be upset, but please understand it was a huge amount of work that went into this update. And please understand that the update is entirely your choice.

We're also offering free updates for anyone who purchased on or after 15 July 2014.

All we want is to ensure iStat Menus can continue to serve those who use it well. That means every couple of years, there may be a paid update available.

Was it specified when the app wanted to download the patch, that it was a paid upgrade? I probably too quickly assumed that it was just a minor update so I wound up with a non-functional app.

It's uninstalled now, just wondering.

Bug?

iStat Menus is appearing like this to me.

iStat menus is cheap, all minor version changes are free so quit moaning about price. Just because the IOS store is filled with idiot developers who think their works is worth cents doesn't mean you are entitled to free or close to free software.

Bjango is also one of the most responsive companies I have dealt with. I filed a bug for iStat Menus 5 after updating to DP7 and within a couple hours (literally) I had a reply with a download link to a new version that fixed the (cosmetic) bug I filed. Very impressed.

The one thing that annoyed me, is that my v4 popped up a screen saying there was an update to v5 and if I wanted to install, without mentioning it was a paid upgrade. So after clicking OK, I was presented with the buy or trial screen. I don't mind paying (which of course I did), but I do mind being tricked into upgrading without being told I'm supposed to spend money. So note to Bjango: be more clear when presenting update notifications for major version updates.

Can this app mess up any of Apple's sensors or change any SMC rules?

Yes and it did. I have used iStat for years without a problem. Immediately after updating to iStat 5, my Mac mini's fan control is not longer automatic at all. It simply won't come on ever, unless I turn it on with iStat.

I reset SMC to no avail. Not happy at all.

Does anyone get these ugly grey boxes on their dark mode drop downs on iStat 5? I am using Yosemite GM Candidate 1. Picture attached.

EDIT: Didn't realize this was a repost. Sorry.

EDIT AGAIN: Here is the fix. http://s3.amazonaws.com/bjango/files/istatmenus5/istatmenus_569.zip

Mine is the exact same except with the light color menus. There are these ugly box fill ins that are the same color as the background. Can anyone recommend a fix? Running Yosemite 10.10 on a 15" mid 2014 rMBP.

****EDIT: Oops shouldʻve read before posting. The download fixed my issue. I do have one question though >> What exactly was the download? Iʻm assuming thatʻs the fix that was put out by Bjango that someone mentioned above?

iStat crashing after menu bar download fix installed

****EDIT #2: As noted in the first EDIT, the download fixed my menu bar issue. However, now when I click on "check for updates" the app iStat crashes and I get the error pictured below. I have it checked to "automatically check for updates" but I think that too crashed the first time it tried to do that. Should I perhaps delete and reinstall?

****not my day today, all the simple fixes seem to be the way to go. Reinstall fixed the bug.

I just switched to menu meters

I just switched to menu meters from stat pro, which I did not pay for the next upgrade. For my needs menu meters is almost perfect. However it has one big shortcoming. No temperature monitoring. Any suggestions for a program that will monitor temperature?
