It'll be interesting to see what, if any, effect the coming Android tablets will have on iPad sales. Perhaps there'll be plenty of market for all.

Also saw a rumor in the news today about HP's coming WebOS tablet having pen input available as well as touch, which will be a nice capability.

Between Android and WebOS, I'm thinking that the smart money will be on HP. They have the best chance of producing a cohesive product... experience with hardware and an OS that might be better on a tablet than it was on a phone.

I think Android will be a fairly profitable but fragmented bottom dweller, designed to push ads.

Apple will never ship a stylus.

If another tablet is going to be as successful as the iPad, it'll probably be the HPalm WebOS device, or a WP7 derivative. iPad's only a successful product because of the ecosystem built around it, as the countless tablet failures of the past can attest. Google doesn't have the will to make it work.

Its also successful because its a damned nice piece of kit, as the Brits would say.

2 things here:

1. I doubt Apple will come out with multiple sizes of iPads. Maybe I'm wrong, but doing so seems to me like a slap in the face to developers.

You can easily come out with new sizes without changing resolution. You can use the IP4 960x640 for sweet sized 5"-6" one handed iPad.

Even so with already 3 resolutions to support, only brain dead developers aren't making a new resolution much more than a tweak and a recompile away.

Anyone wanting to make a few quid on the side could do worse than stock up on iPads for the Christmas season. You can bet your arse they will be fetching well over retail on ebay in Nov/Dec and stock will not be able to keep up.

Resolution is not the same as size. See: iPhone 4. :p

I didn't say they were. On the one hand he said changing the size would be an issue for developers because "iPad apps are about pixel-precision." He then suggests that they should put a higher resolution screen in. This would have the same impact on that "pixel-precision." It's not a big deal, he just made me scratch my head and go

Hopefully the SDK is device independent so it shouldn't be a big issue in either case but I haven't had time to work with it yet. My current endeavor is working with Google App Engine. (Now that is an odd beast.) As soon as I'm done with that I have an app I want to do connects the iP4 with GAE. Then I'll have to dive into the SDK and find out first hand.

Incidentally, I would love an iPad with a higher resolution screen to show off my photography. The current iPad is on the top of my list for devices but the only thing keeping me away is the closed ecosystem. On the road I would like to move my pictures from the camera's media (CF or SD) to the iPad to a remote system to be imported into Lightroom. So far I haven't found that missing piece of the puzzle. Until then the iPad is on my want list but not yet on my need list. But now I'm just rambling... ;)

Face it. iPad is a sucess. The only reason I would not be an "early adopter" would be not having the dough to shell out. And I'll be first in line for the next generation as well, and can not see getting rid of the "Classic".

But but but....

Hundreds of posts by doubters saying it won't sell! I recall them, I read them! They can't be wrong!!!

iPad is really just a toy.

Like a beanie baby or cabbage patch doll or tickle me elmo.

Only better.

I guess the Apple hype machine can overcome lack of function or purpose in a shiny gadget that is a solution for a yet to be discovered problem. Good news for Apple stockholders.

I know, right?

Look at the iPod. It didn't do anything but play music, and just because Steve Jobs talked about it one day on some stage somewhere, everyone was brainwashed and had to buy it. Same stuff here. This thing doesn't do anything! DOES NOTHING! Will it drive your car? No. Useless. It only plays music, movies, does email and internet browsing, allows document creation and reading, eBooks, small apps and games, holds organizational data... totally worthless.

It needs an optical drive, a large hard drive, quad core minimal, and Flash. And it has to be under 1lb. and fit in a pocket.

You obviously would be very happy in a world where 100% of the tech products were Apple. No competition is just fine with you.

I think he, like the more discerning people around here, would like some REAL competition, not copycat artists that churn out lousy gear.

what a failure... told ya, nobodys gonna buy this till it plays flash. you read it here first! :D
