I couldnt stand the glare anymore. I called my local apple repairer and spent 800 AUS for the apple original antiglare display(the silver frame one). I have to say the difference is massive as I no longer see any glares and personally I think the silver frame makes the laptop look more professional. The reason I did it is because I am planning on using my macbook for 4-5 years or even longer. So what do you guys think? good deal or purely wasted or money?

My wife spent $800 on a shiny hand bag.

Or, for free, you could have twisted your seat so that there wasn't any glare on your screen. ;)

Haha I guess ur not really happy about it ?

----------

OMG this guy spent $830 on a display for his MBP FFS arrest this idiot i don't like what he did with his money and his money is everything to do with me

- everyone on this thread

It's actually 890 for the screen and 150 for the labourer fees.

----------

If you like the results and were happy with the price, then its a good deal. I always say the price/satisfaction thing is personal.

Things i pay for that i think are worth it to me, others may say is a waste. End of the day they don't matter - its your happiness with the result that counts.

Sounds like you have a winner there :)

Thank you for your positive comment. :)
It does make me happy since I no longer see any reflections on the screen

The old screen can be bought on ebay brand new for ~$100. That used screen won't be getting much money for him. Not to mention the problems of selling a very specific model of a screen, it is not very liquid.

I think I will just keep the old screen ..

I almost cut my hand off opening my 2006 MacBook Pro. I DON'T blame you! $830 is a tad bit much, but you know, that's just the cost that us as people who can't do these things ourselves have to deal with.

After you break one and do some damage is when you will be experienced enough to do this kind of work. Broken glass is not so friendly.
I would have done as it was already mentioned :
-Sell the glossy and buy a matte
-Buy parts online and follow iFixit.com

Otherwise, just kept the Mac and buy an Apple TV and the use Airplay Mirroring on a large TV screen that is matte...

Why if you didn't like the glossy you bought it?

Some people would say you have more money than sense...

...I would be one of those people!

Actually, $100 is just for the LCD. The OP replaced the whole top case, which goes for around $700 new. In my opinion, the only rip off were the labour charges, which can't be avoided due to location anyway; the price for the screen was well justified (remember, it's AUD, not USD).

Well, it was actually a bit of a double fiasco. My horror story will convince you that you went down the right path:

My MacBook suffered a sharp impact behind the screen, which cracked the LCD and the glass. I purchased a new Hi-Res glossy LCD panel and the front glass for $160 or so from powerbookmedic.com. In my zeal, I sealed in the new glass before I tested the display. The cable was loose. While trying to remove the glass, I used too strong a suction cup, cracking the new glass. I went to a local 3rd party Apple repair centre to get the cracked glass removed ($20). Since the glass was already cracked, the chap couldn't use a suction cup and had to use guitar pics and pins along with the heat gun. Now, the rubber surrounding the screen is all screwed but the screen survived without any scratches. I got a new glass from eBay (China) for $20 or so, but that seems to be either a fake or remove from another machine (the glue wasn't so good). No complaints, though.

A question, however: did they give you your old panel back? I think that $800 is the price for the whole top panel (they should have replaced the whole thing). So, they should have given back your original panel.

hey raptor, one last question if you dont mind me asking. When ur screen was cracked and you had the chance to purchase a matte screen and put it on, why didnt u do so? Was it because u prefer the glossy screen over matte screen?

Thanks

I read some reviews on the forum and internet about the glossy display, and most of the reviews mentioned abt the richness of the colour of the screen but they failed mention how glassy it can be even under normal lightening condition .
By the time I noticed that issue, it was too late too return and get a new one. That's why I was stuck. However, I am planning on using this macbook for at least 4-5 years and I don't want the screen the ruin my experiences . That's why I decided to make a change.

Can even imagine what happen when I take my MacBook Pro to App Store next time and they find out that I modify the screen myself

I personally prefer matte. My work area isn't really sunlit so I don't need the matte finish. Other than that, I find the glossy display to be far clearer (I can't stand matte in laptops and handhelds).

Hello!

Sorry for ressing this but I just wanted to share that I'll to the same with my screen. Although the LCD itself was fine, the lid was terribly dented and it wasn't even closing as it should anymore.

Since anti-glare panels will be gone forever soon, I thought it would be worth having my machine properly fixed.

I'll pay roughly 850 USD for a brand-new anti-glare display assembly, service included. They are keeping the old display assembly though. But since OP payed 1050, I guess it means I would be selling the old one for 200 USD. Probably an OK price for a dented assembly.

I just wish people could switch the top lid instead of the whole assembly. Would have saved me some nice money.

Mac will never be outdated. Anti-glare screen+Ethernet port+15 inch classic model. easily last me for 5-6 years

Your Mac will be outdated. Laptop is not a Fashion product. A classic model will not last forever like a Chanel bag.

Not sure which model you have but in 5 years, your MBP might still handle your daily computing fine but it's definitely a dated tech product, just like every other tech gadgets.

don't they make screen protectors with built in anti-glare capabilities?

I'm assuming those would be under $40?

http://store.apple.com/us/product/H8055ZM/A/moshi-15-ivisor-pro-matte-screen-protector-for-macbook-pro

That's the first google search result I found, I'm sure there are others.

AG screen protectors ruin the color gamut. Nothing beats the color gamut of an Apple AG display.

If I remember correctly, these graphs are from AnandTech and it shows that the antiglare screen of a MacBook Pro displays colors more accurately than the retina.

I'm not sure about ruining the color gamut....it's got great reviews. Mostly all of those reviewers gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

$40 vs $830

I think I would go with that $40 any day of the week, even if I had $830 to burn.

Which year/model is your system? The AG was the equivalent part/model/year I take it?

In any case, the the high-res anti-glare were definitely the best they ever made. IMHO.

Australia and New Zealand get massively ripped off in terms of most products.

----------

Not in Aussie or New Zealand where MBPs start at around NZD 2000 for the RMBP's.

That's why I buy all my Macs in Malaysia. According to the WSJ, Malaysia is the cheapest place in the world to buy Apple products because it's untaxed. The government even gives an RM3000 (about USD940) cash rebate for a new computer per person every year.

Since I have family in Malaysia, I go there quite often and also take the opportunity to buy Macs there.

Wow that's so cheap.

It's far cheaper for sure. I live in the middle of nowhere somewhere in the South Island (Queenstown) and going all the way to Christchurch just to get a Mac isn't worth the expense. Ordering online's just as pricey.

You should have a look at Auckland, I think we get the most ripped off. But Aucklands also the largest city sooooo.

$800 you could have paid for more than 50% of a new macbook retina. In 4-5 Years your current Macbook pro will be outdated (assuming you don't have 16gb of ram right now). I just don't see why you would spend this much to get that screen changed.

The CPU and GPU are going to be way outdated before the RAM is.

Guys, I will soon have a 15" macbook pro MATTE anti-glare LCD assembly with a dented corner for sale.

Apple is willing to pay me USD 100 for it. Do you think it's a good deal or should I keep it and try to sell it elsewhere?
