I always buy longer cables for most devices I own. I don't expect them too ship with long cables.
Why shouldn’t they ship with the right length cable? It creates massive waste like Apple has proclaimed about chargers. Never to fear, Apple will remove cables next and we will all buy long cables. Actually, the short cables work better in car or at computer. It’s when plugged into a wall outlet that it really needs to be 2-3m long.

No, but the point is, that apple is seemingly only supplying the bare minimum, each year the included items in their products seem to get less and less.
Of course you are correct, but Apple fans, and probably Apple workers' family members or friends in this forum, will always take Apple's side. As such, the opinion of the original poster of this thread is watered down and loses its meaning.

Of course it will remove cables. First are chargers being removed, so cables will be next. Automobile manufacturers have already removed full-size spare tires. Some don't even include a "donut" spare tire anymore, just a cheap tire inflator 😅

These things are done to reduce manufacturing and other costs and to increase profit. Somebody has to pay for the fancy Apple stores, workforce, advertisers, etc., and those paying aren't the company's shareholders. Far into the future we probably won't need power cables to power or charge any of the portable devices at home. More likely it will be done wirelessly.

The iPad Pro apparently moved from including a 2m to 1m cable about 8 years ago (starting with second gen). And Apple started advertising the iPad as a laptop replacement around the same time. So it's peculiar/interesting that I've never seen complaints about the included cable length until this thread, unlike ongoing complaints like wanting macOS on iPad. It's possible there were complaint threads in the beginning and I just don't remember. But it's still peculiar that this complaint popped up almost a decade later. The only explanation I can think of is it's because Apple stopped including charging adapters with iPhones, and prices have increased over the years across the board, and this has caused some people to reach a "boiling point" which caused them to find something unacceptable that they or previous customers formerly accepted or ignored. I guess not really making a point, just an observation/thinking out loud.

For the record I had no problem with Apple no longer supplying a charging brick with the iPhone, as I do believe most people have some sort of USB-C charger in their house at this point that they can use, and it does reduce waste.

I’ve been a reader of MacRumors for about 20 years now, but I haven’t posted much on these forums in recent years. Looking back at this thread days later it’s kind of incredible to me how many people seem to refuse to engage with this topic in a genuine way. So many people replying as if I offended them, or I complained as if I was tricked into buying this iPad not knowing the cable was short, when I never made any such statement.

I simply voiced an opinion that Apple’s continued inclusion of a 1 meter cable with a $1,300 iPad Pro that they market as if it’s comparable to their laptops is ridiculous when they ship every single laptop with 2 meter cable. Apparently this was an outlandish thing to say around here. I’m not sure whether to take this as a signal that the younger generations of Apple fans are defensive of any Apple critique, or people just get upset when they see someone use a scary intense words like “utterly ridiculous”, as if we have to be careful about offending Apple’s feelings or something.

I agree not everyone here has engaged genuinely, but as someone who doesn't agree with your statement "including the 1m cable doesn't make any sense except greed" (maybe paraphrasing), I believe I responded (post#72 and a little in #148) genuinely and in good faith by offering ways that I see it possibly making sense (feel free to disagree). This is not to say that Apple definitely didn't do it out of greed because I try not to make judgments of that sort (unless absolutely necessary, as I find intention often tricky to figure out/know). Nor do I believe that I am a good judge of what Apple should and shouldn't do. I only offer what I believe to be possible non-greed-motivated logic behind their decision.

To reiterate my arguments--if high price is the reason Apple is obligated to include the 2m cable, then that implies that Apple is justified to include a 1m cable with the rumored cheaper MacBook. It also implies that Apple is obligated to include a 2m cable with their more expensive iPhones and Watches etc. I imagine most don't believe that to be true, and if so, then cable length is really just about device type and usage, not about price. You maintain that because Apple advertises the iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard as a possible laptop replacement that a laptop length cable should be included with the iPP. But I think there is a jump in logic because then why not also argue that Apple should include the MK with the iPP or at least package them together since they are advertised together? Of course it's because not everyone uses the iPad Pro as a laptop, some use it as a tablet because that's what it is baseline. So it makes sense to include the tablet usage length cable with the iPP. As I said in post 148, I think you would have a stronger case of saying that the 2m cable should be included with the MK.

It is kinda strange Apple gives you the same 1m cable as a $599 iPhone.
It's because in spite of everything that Apple has said or done over the years to promote the iPad Pro as a "computer", in their heart of hearts they still consider the iPad to be a mobile device.

I think you’re over explaining this whole thing in an effort to justify them not including the 2m cable. You refer to a “tablet length cable” as if there is a universal length we all know for tablets.

We don’t have to overthink this. These are indisputable facts:

1) Apple ships all their laptops with a 2 meter cable.
2) Apple markets the iPad Pro as a device comparable to a laptop. They literally ran an entire advertising campaign some years ago built around the idea that the iPad was a “computer”.
3) The iPad Pro is sold at a price comparable to Apple’s MacBook Pro, the best laptop they make.
4) The iPad Pro includes Apple’s computer processor inside it, not their iPhone processor.

All of that is why I say it’s utterly ridiculous that the iPad Pro does not ship with a 2 meter cable in the box.

Just my two cents….i think phrases like “utterly ridiculous” can make it sound like a rant. Rants often get backlash. The common response is that the rant is over something trivial or it’s a first world problem.

I agree with your point that a 2m cable would be better. I bought one for my M1 iPad Pro.

Okay. Your opinion, based on but not limited to, how you use and (infer) Apple’s iPad marketing is that Apple should include a charge/sync cable of equivalent (or greater) length to the MacBook products. That's fine, seriously.

That feeling logically belongs here:

Notice how it’s a feedback, not a complaint form — meant as a general note, not intended as snide/condescending/etc.
feedback
information about reactions to a product, a person’s performance of a task, etc.
which is used as a basis for improvement
In other words, Apple is inviting the very type of idea you’re expressing.
Grievance or not, I assume, you want your opinion to be genuinely considered. And you can post here, for example, to verify and/or get support for your determination. Again, that’s fine. Though, if your opinion is sincere, Apple is the destination.

You criticized people here for not engaging genuinely. I took time to think about your arguments and I laid out my counterpoints to each, but you hand waved away my arguments by labeling them as "over explaining" and merely repeated your arguments and implied any rebuttal as "overthinking". Is that genuine?

You did offer one counterpoint--that there is no universal tablet length cable. That is true, but I was making the assumption that we all agreed that tablets (without keyboards) are used differently than laptops--that they aren't as often plugged in while using, therefore there isn't as much need for a longer cable. Isn't that afterall a basis of your argument--that a laptop-type device should have a longer cable?

But they ruin goodwill with the consumers as they don’t reduce the selling price they only ensure shareholders make more money which ensures the executives who made the decision make more money. It’s a bad system. Truly. I work with the wealthiest 1%, and it sickens me how the greed has made wealth gaps massive in their favor destroying the middle class of the world.

That is true, but consumers are mostly interested in the product, and often are unaware about the reasons why Apple, as well as other similarly large companies, conduct business. It is us the consumers who pay the price for the product we want or need. Some in this forum may say, "but nobody is forcing you to buy the iPad with 1 meter cable," without understanding that the OP of this thread was just expressing his displeasure with Apple. In my view it is a valid reason for the OP to do so, even as I understand why Apple does such things (profit).

I think its time to stop shipping a charging cable at all, most people have a USB-C cables and if they don't, offer a "starter package" that contains a charger and a cable for a decent price.
100% I'm drowning in cables that come with every single gadget/widget/thing you buy these days. USB-C of every sort and some still shipping legacy USB-A. And I already have a collection of decent cables. As you say, absolutely nothing should come with a cable or a charger. Save money, save shipping costs, save the planet!

Just bought the M5 Pro and I cannot believe they are shipping this thing with a 1 meter USB-C cable when the device costs $1,300. They ship far cheaper MacBook Air’s with a 2 meter charging cable.

If you want to charge this thing and still use it you must be extremely close to an outlet. I should not have to think about this with a device so expensive.
OMG! Another MacRumors drama queen with a ridiculously over-the-top headline.

LOL, it's hard to think of another phrase that would have set the tone more quickly, but I believe it was the subsequent defense that inadvertently fueled the fury. It's almost a textbook case of how to create an ongoing thread in the sleepy iPad forum.
The common response is that the rant is over something trivial or it’s a first world problem.
And oh boy, a $1300 iPad on its own is a first world problem. Heck, we're still debating which size is best and who should have or need one.

Add the cost of a MKB and I can see the origins of an iPad Pro rant. It's secretly distressing (because we dare not admit) to spend so much money (and effort thinking and planning and worrying about the future of this device) when one suspects that the base model could do what we actually end up using the Pro for (especially when one already owns another device more suited for the tasks we said we could do on the iPP if we upgraded and got enough storage).
