Buy some Oust, it kills the germs that cause odor.

Spray Febreeze on all his clothes when he is out of the room.

Than, go to Bath and Body Works and buy him a loofah, and body wash.

Then, go to Wal-Mart and buy him deodorant!

Woo!

What the hell kind of food would make someone smell like urine?

It could be the asparagus gene. Some people have a gene that when they eat asparagus, it causes [sometimes them and] their urine to stink something pungently hideous.

Then again, if he's a college student, I doubt he's eating a lot of that, or much anything else naturally green for that matter.

Go up to him and say "Geeze, there is this awful smell in the room, any idea what it could be?" that way he has a chance to explain himself if he knows about it without you accusing him, and if it is, in fact, a rotting racoon inexplicably covered in urine under the floorboards, you are saved the embarassment of accusing your room mate.

It sounds to me like he needs to use Clorox 2 color safe on ALL of his laundry and bedding, then needs to find a good sports deodorant soap.

Wash the walls and the floors too just to freshen the room.

So I moved into my dorm today to only find that my roommate is a complete slob. We went over the ground rules and what not and everything seems to be in order. Just one thing. The guy smells......bad. It's an indescribable mix of BO and urine. He has an air freshener but that only seems to be exacerbating the situation.

Can anyone give me a recommendation on what I should buy to neutralize or cover this smell? Thanks guys :(

Maybe it's the room. If you've been there for a day, chances are, he probably has been too, unless he came early or whatever.

Pet odour eliminator powder and liquid formula. they come in half gallon jugs and wash every surface with it. powder is good for carpets, drapes, sofas and the like. Gets rid of cigarette odours too,

Baking Soda in every corner will absorb odours.

Check the mattress, and floor too,

Or you can try vinegar water 1:4 with lemon juice to clena everything up and neutralize odours...

If there's urin in the carpet, you're done for. There is no way to get urin out of a carpet. You're just going to have to request a different room. In the mean time, try to find some kind of auxiliary room in the building to sleep in.

You poor thing. If I were you I'd clean everything. Scrub the walls, floor and furniture. Open the windows right up an leave de-oderise the place. Just what everyone else had said I guess. Tell us how it all goes.

Anyone see this in this weeks news of the weird?
Weird disorders in the news recently included prosopagnosia, the inability of a person to remember people by their faces, even one's immediate family, and trimethylaminuria, the inability to process a chemical that, left in the body, causes a putrid odor. Researchers will soon declare that prosopagnosia (which also, obviously, inhibits sufferers' ability to enjoy movies) is less rare than previously believed, according to a June Boston Globe story. Trimethylaminuria remains basically untreatable (although bathing several times a day and ingesting chlorophyl reduce the stink, according to an August ABC News report). [The Mirror (London), 7-4-06] [Boston Globe, 6-14-06] [ABC News, 8-9-06]

Fight fire with fire. Don't wash for weeks, leave dirty underwear on his side of the room, under his pillow etc. See how he likes it. Ok, the pillow thing might not be the best idea.

Oh dear, I'm so happy I don't have to face your smelly roommate! :p I feel for ya mate. :(

I appreciate all the advice given here. I should've cleared up a few things in my intial post. For one, the dorm I'm living in is new. It was built a year ago so the place is pretty clean or was pretty clean. He lived in this room for about 2-3 weeks before I moved in because I couldn't stand the stench and hoped to get switched before the start of school. That never happened so I'm here now. We did get around to cleaning the place a bit, or should I say his side. I'm sure there aren't any rodents or any animals/food lying around, just his BO.

edit- and it's still as stankalicious as before :(

This might make u kinda ghey, but buy a box of unscented candles. Those small cylinder shaped ones that sit in their own little plastic trays. Just make sure he doesn't get turned on by it.

Not to scare you, but here's what will eventually happen to you. You and ALL your belongings will eventually smell like him unless you fight it off w/ a scent of some sort. But you it can get worse by mixing smells. In any case, also have him try de-ordorant? That seems like the obvious answer.

alright what im about to tell u is dangerous but it will turn Bo. Urine and othe rbad smells into clean air .
Buy a carpet cleaner the kidn with water bucket in it and shoots water.
Then you buy soem Febreeze. Gladd Plugins, several liquid deoderants and then soem shampoo miz it all into a liquid then you put in caprent cleanre bucket you that the capretn cleaner and get a vaccum cleaner thing its like trianglur and then turn it on it willl shot the liquid u made into the air but then u have a small fan near the nozle where the stuff comes out this liquid is becomnig an air anti biotical smelling which litterally gets rid of the bad smells and turns them into clean air its basically a filter so not only will u have no more smell but u have clean air not stupid frooly fake smelling mask. I say its dangerous cause soem of these chemicals mixed will make amonia and coul dpossibly get u very sick so watch which ones u pickl bu tthe oesn i recommended are fine.
If this doesnt work u probably did it wrong or nothing will work cause i do this alot in my dorm room i got a smell y kid too

WTF?

If I remember right, putting baking soda (or was it baking powder?) in your room helps get rid of smells. Febreeze is good, too.

My room had a terrible smell last year. We eventually found out that it was a sack of oranges one of the roommates (I had a supplemental room, with several other guys) forgot behidn the fridge and was rotting away. So you might want to see if it's something rotting as well.

Best solution probably is to demand a room change. They say no, but if you (and your parents) yell loud enough, they'll probably do it.

Oh man, I feel for you. That's why I refused to live on campus unless they gave me a single room (which they didn't) so I live in an off-campus apartment.

If you don't mind the smell of smoke, and the fire alarms won't go off, light a few matches. That usually neutralizes a few smells. For awhile, anyways. Maybe a few hours. Or try one of those scented plug-ins?

i second that. according to the myth, candles neutralize smell. i just don't know if it would neutralize your smelly problem. i was also told, that indoor plants does the trick too.

Just hope that part of Mr. Smelly's problem isn't from passed gas.

*boom*

I would recommend an air purifier such as the Sharp Plasmacluster or something along those lines having atleast activated carbon or ionization. It works wonders on odors from our dog, and it even has a "odor sensor" which adjusts the fan speed based on the odor it senses.
The best thing to do is neutralize the odors, not cover it up.
If its really bad you could find some way to rent an ozone generator, which is what professionals use to get rid of smells.
