on opening day at the Domain, the apple people came out with a 3G phone to show people in line. I looked at it, and saw the E. i asked the guy "i thought it was supposed to be 3G"

he said the apple store is actually on a 3G boundary and they dont get coverage there.

Really? Cause ATTs website says theres plenty around that area, and oh look at that. i have 3G, but with only 2 bars

me thinks they turned off 3G so people wouldnt be discouraged by the low signal it picks up

See I have a 2G Iphone and I've been lusting after the 3G but there are now two strikes against it:

1) No more chargin in-car when I connect to my Alpine HU. Why the heck they wrecked this is beyond me because charging the phone on my 15 minute commute never hurt and with 3G battery life couldn't do anything but help. Only thing I can think is they wanted a proper charge regiment on the phones (fully discharge, charge)

2) 3G coverage. ATTs map shows blue all over the Austin area. Yet I've not heard of many people getting more than 2 bars. 3 guys at my work have 3g. We work downtown...you'd expect 5 bars there...but only 3 MAX. WTF is that about? Its bad enough that 2 of them just shut of 3G because the coverage isn't worth the battery drain...

ya, for car charging, i just bought a cheap cigarette lighter plug with a USB plug on the back. So i just leave an extra ipod cable in my car and charge it like that. it works, its unfortunant about the Alpine unit, buddy of mine has one that doesnt work anymore.

ya, i believe the 3G coverage issue might be phone related. Cause last night i drove by a tower and all the sudden got FULL 3G bars, first time since ive had the phone. As i drove away, the bars went down...:(

oh well, hopefully they will update the antenna soon

This is a common complaint around those in New Orleans as well

AT&T has a good portion of the city and Metairie covered yet people in both complain of very poor 3G speeds in several parts of those places

While i was there, at least 5 people came in asking about one. The sales rep told one guy

"everyone sold out, the quickest way to get one is to order one with us"

i wanted to walk up to him and tell him Apple gets big DAILY shipments and just go there. haha

Same thing here man. I did the DF on Friday, and on Monday, I decided I couldn't wait any longer. (an ATT girl that I did the DF told me that no one had the iPhone, not even the apple store (2 hours away). The quickest way was to order it with her).

So Monday, I decided to drive 2 hours to an Apple store, got there at 7:50am, there were about 15 ppl in front of me. 30 minutes later, I walked out with a shiny black 16GB iPhone.
So the same day, I went back to ATT and canceled the DF order. The guy at ATT asked why I wanted to cancel it, I told him....
"I just got one today at the apple store, THEY HAD PLENTY!!!" and the guy was like, oh cool.... w/e....

I kinda feel sorry for the ATT sales folks. As in the 8-5 people that are trying to make a living. They had to cancel vacations and prepare to put in long hours and such, only to get hosed over and get no inventory to speak of. Those "little guys" got jerked around by someone, be it their corporate managers that didn't order enough, or Apple that refused to allocated too many.

But, the last thing the ATT sales folks need to do is to mislead the public. It makes it hard to feel sorry for them if they out and out just lie to folks.

Yeah but then you can't listen to your music at the same time as you are chargin which defeats the purpose...

I saw this HU which I am now lusting after: http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=IVA-W505

Why not get a Griffin iAutoPilot or similar? There will be a fair few iPhone stands for cars for GPS SatNav use and that'll do charging and Radio/iTunes soon enough. The EDGE iPhone Griffin iTrips and iAutoPilots seem to work well enough if you want a cheaper version.

Because My Alpine Fullspeed cable won't work with that; there's only one connection...and my alpine fullspeed cable uses it so I can use my HU to control my ipod.
