Wasn't there an article on MacRumors after the 4S was released about www.iphone4s.com? It was originally a porn site or something, then apple bought it. This was AFTER the phone was released. So even if those names aren't owned by apple, doesn't mean they can't get it.

That's poor timing. If they knew they were going to call it that, why would they release it and then have millions of people get directed to a porn site?

Who does that?

The stupidity in this thread is incredible.

The naming scheme with all these numbers just gets stupid and un-apple like in general.

If you want to use any logic look what they did with the iPad naming. Just "iPad" and hopefully the phone this year will be back to just "iPhone". Hell, every iPhone built since the original only has the name "iPhone" on the rear of it.

----------

New iPhone has been ruled out.

Not only that but New iPhone is actually the worst naming scheme of all. When you go to search it up, you will just see a pile of phones and not know which one is actually the new one.

Since they might be calling it the iPhone 5, at what point would it get out of hand really. Is an iPhone 7 really going to confuse anyone?

Are you serious? "Worst naming scheme of all"?

iPhone 7 may not confuse much, but marketing wise it's starting to look ridiculous. Open apple.com and look at their line of products. Simplicity. Imagine if the iPod kept numbers all these years?

No one in this thread said that the iPhone had to be named with a number. It could be something like the iPhone E.

The iPad was a special case I always thought. I mean obviously you had people using iPads and iPad 2's and I mean since nothing really changed in the iPad area, they didn't really have a reason to call it anything but an iPad.

The fact of the matter is that sometimes you have to shake it up a little. When everyone's using different versions of iPhones, you have to designate a difference somehow.

Our detective team are just ruling out the possiblities. And we will have a definitive answer in the coming weeks.

They're going to (or should) call it the new iPhone. The numbers are going to get confusing and out of hand, this is the most logical naming scheme and it fits with their other product lines. They should have done this since the 4s.

I agree that the numbering system is going to get ridiculous. At what point do they stop? If they make a new iPhone every year for the next 20 years, they will be up to the iPhone 25. Would Apple really call it that?

You don't expect anyone to think that if they come out with yet another iPad that that iPad will also be called new iPad. Nope. I just can't see it.

You're right. Makes no sense. Just like the iPod. Every year there's a new iPod. You would never think it'll be called the new iPod.

Or how about the iMac? I notice they currently call it the iMac 12, cause there's no way they'd want people to be confused with the iMac 11.

You're on to something with the letters though. Maybe this will be the iPhone E, and next year the iPhone F. Definitely possible.

Well I guess there's just no telling what the new iPhone will be but I will say that I've never seem anything like it before. I wonder if any of you hipsters are already used to this.

How can you say you've never seen anything like it before, when you've still never seen the official design?

The new iPhone (which would actually just be 'iPhone') is fits their naming scheme (the one they use for iMac, iPods, MacBooks, Mac Pros).
^ Out of this quite pitiful thread, I found two posts to agree with :)

I can see them calling it New iPhone, but what do they do for the second version? We have the 4 & 4S now, what will we have in 2013 The New iPhone S?
One question: Seriously?

I'm just as confused now as when I began. Okay guys after all this new information we've gotten nowhere so let's just make this the end of this discussion.

100% chance that the next iPhone is called by one of the names on this list.

It will also be "The New iPhone". Just like with Macs. In the future, if one has the need to specify which iPhone (s)he owns, one will simply say "iPhone (2012)".

I wonder if Apple will change the 'iPhone' name on the back to indicate which one you have !

I remember when the 4s was released and a few new owners expressed their disapointment that it did not indicate anywhere what iPhone they owned.

Personally I think Apple just leave it saying iPhone because that's enough street cred needed ! lol

It'll be called the new "iPhone" and will hopefully eventually follow the same naming scheme as the Macbooks and iPads. You don't see anyone saying they have a Macbook Pro 6 or something.

List of names 6th generation iPhone will not have:

(updating)

iPhone 5
iPhone Slim
iPhone Pro
iPhone A6
iPhone 6
New iPhone
iPhone 4G
iPhone LTE
iPhone 3D
iPhone IV

* This has been checked by using WHOIS to see which names Apple owns. If Apple doesn't own it, it can't have that name.

Feel free to add

Try your luck here

We can cross out the following because Apple just wont call it due to its incompatibility across the globe with 4G/LTE:
- iPhone 4G (X)
- iPhone LTE (X)

I am 100% Sure it wont be a Quad-Core Processor, mainly because apple has been bringing their best to the iPad first then the iPhone.
- iPhone A6

100% Sure there will be no 3D on this iPhone, as much as I hate to burst anyones bubble but at more times apple fans are a bit unrealistic with their asking's and I feel apple is no where near ready to bring something like 3D into mass production anytime soon:
- iPhone 3D (X)

100% Sure apple will not launch that "Cheaper iPhone", again another one of those things that people keep asking/thinking they are going to get....be realistic....If apple wanted to make "Cheap" phones dont you think they would release 2-3+ models/year? But no thats not the case, those that are seeking a cheaper iPhone, that iPhone exists already...its the model from the year before and if you want to go even cheaper...then its the model from 2 years before, that is what Apple calls "Cheap/Cheaper iPhone"
- iPhone Pro (X)

100% Sure apple wouldn't pick a name like "SLIM" to go along with its iPhone because it just doesn't sound professional...their goal is to make slimmer, lighter, and quality devices not name them based on their offerings because iPhone 4/4S were already the "SLIM" if not the slimmest phones in the world at launch...
- iPhone Slim (X)

Only Possible names left with are:
- New iPhone (based on the iPad's calling, We can expect it to be called this as apple is moving away from the numbering system much like it did with its Mac lineup....there is no Macbook 1 or 2 or 3 or 5...its just Macbook (Pro/Air) and user it self can call it by its internal name such as Macbook Pro 8,2 etc. They just want everyone to have an iPhone...and not be differentiating it in a crowd by yelling out "iPhone 3G,3GS,4,4S" this way only the user knows which model he/she has...not everyone the block...much like the iPhone 4/4S doesn't show the GB Size on the back anymore...everyone in a room can have an iPhone 4/4S...but no one knows what size...
- iPhone 6
- iPhone 5 --> I doubt it because it would confuse alot of people...6th generation iPhone being called iPhone 5...
- iPhone IV (4) <--I'm not sure why OP stated this but i think this if apple owns the name for WHOIS then its/it was probably for the iPhone 4/4S...and nothing to do with the future iPhone...even if they registered it much after the release of i4/4S....
