Lots of great comments, thanks! This isn't dead yet, so your comments are appreciated!

I may go with the 32GB. Talked to my brother who told me how much he has on his (between his music, movies, etc) and I think I would be well within the 32GB.

I have never had anything like this before, so I really don't know what APPs are out there. I'll have to see that APPs I could possibly use. I love to travel, so my netbook is great to have to write my journals (typically very long), upload my photos, and keep track of my expenses. Email and surfing the net too. The one thing I use my netbook for is to have my word documents about each of the cities I visit. Can you upload word documents onto itouch?

I can see adding movies but I'm not into youtube or videos.

I suppose the itouch can be my daily "friend" for music at work and at the gym. I did read that you can do e-reading. Maybe an alternative to a kindle??

I guess bottom line is: I'm not in a rush to make a final decision. :D

Monica

PS: Might as well ask: If I end up keeping this 64GB (or switch to the 32) what kind of case do you recommend. I really don't like the shiny backside of this. Catches every finger print! Should have made it with a matte finish.

I initially got a Belkin Grip Curve (simple soft back case with clear plastic
screen protector) - nice, but don't like the "Belkin" name displayed. Then I
got the Switcheasy NeoTouch - wanted the RebelTouch, but decided against
it. The Neo has a 2-piece hard back case, with one part being softer and
thus easy to grip, but still easy to get in and out of a pocket. There is also a
thin liner between the Touch and the Neo, which helps with handle shock.
The Rebel (I think) is probably sturdier.

On another subject, there are rumors of a GPS cradle for the Touch. That
app, plus all you mentioned above plus Kindle says "keep the 64GB". ;^)

First, keep the 64. After we get done apping you up, you will love us for it! :D (but seriously, for the time & gas money you have already spent exchanging it, might as well keep it!).

Then, yes, you can do kindle on it as someone said. There are also travel apps with maps and such you can now carry in your pocket, there are translation apps, there are travel itenerary apps.

You know the saying, there's an app for that. It's kinda true!

I can't type more right now tho, so go wander around and see what you find!

Still thinking. I was going through various web sites about e-reading and other things I can do with the itouch. I really like this idea of e-reading. I had started to look at the kindle, but they’re expensive and I’m not one to buy lots of books at one time, so the kindle would have been overkill for me. But being able to upload books on the itouch is pretty cool.

I think I’m going to return the 64GB and get the 32GB itouch. I can use the $100 savings towards the accessories for a a case, car charger, outlet charger, arm band, and probably a stand. I don’t need to carry my entire collection of music/photos/movies and can swap out when I’m ready to. I could upload 4-5 movies to have when traveling and have a nice collection of songs.

This won’t replace my netbook, which I take on my travels because I do lots of journaling. I also use the netbook to upload my photos that I take every day while on vacation.

Looks like the itouch is a very good catch-all for lots of things. Yes, I know you all know this, I’m just convincing myself that this is a good product for me and worth spending money on. This is something I would have for a long time.

Monica

PS: Just saw Tracey's comments - I was typing my comments. Hmmmm, keep the 64??

I can't figure out how much space all the travel stuff takes - the in App Purchases for say the Lonely Planet guides don't say. I would think something full featured would take a decent chunk. The Rick Steves ones vary - Ancient Rome is 70mb.

You probably could make do with the 32. Don't get me wrong - BUT, if you can afford it now, already have it, in a year you might be thinking - gee, i wish i had gone for the more space.

I keep thinking of the stuff that we are "supposed" to get with the Tablet. All that content will work on the Touch too (i'm assuming anyway) - and for offline viewing/reading - it sounds like a lot of space.

I've just been used to carrying my whole library on my Video for the last 4 years, and in skimming my library yesterday - i know that the 32 will be full out of the gate. Those 8.5gb of audiobooks will do it, but i never know ahead of time what the kids will want to start - and i always have the wrong one.

I'm pretty sure though, for traveling, i'd rather have the Touch over the Nano though. But I have an app, um, problem, and well, space is good! LOL!!

Keep pondering it.....

I guess I’m just trying to save money where possible, as I continue to lean towards the 32GB with the ‘savings’ going to accessories. I started with the 8GB Nano for $140 (and was getting ready to change to 16GB for $165 when I started looking at the itouch) and the 64GB itouch is $380.

I thought through with what I could possibly have on the itouch and came up with this list. The numbers would be maximum. However, since this is all new for me, I’m sure I’m missing other apps that I could possibly use or other ‘items of interest’.

- 3,000 songs
- 4 to 5 movies (I would delete and add new movies for each new trip - could probably just have 3 since I probably would just watch on the airplane or maybe on a sea day on a cruise. I wouldn't watch otherwise)
- 1,000 photos in the small .jpg format, like the small size for emailing.
- Contact information for emailing. Although I guess I would have the emails in a yahoo or gmail account. Can I access hotmail from itouch?

- E-books to read - Maybe 4-5
- A few audio books
- Travel apps, like restaurant information, city information, currency exchange, language translation, maps
- Apps for exercising or health
- A few games. Solitaire, sudoku, etc.

Thanks! :D

How big is your library in iTunes now? I have 3708 songs and mine is 14.68gb. Most of those, except what i bought after they changed are the smaller form of the songs. Songs doubled in size with the newer higher quality files.

Movies can vary, my parents have been playing around with file sizes and have gotten Handbrake down to 3-400mb per movie it looks like. The standard Handbrake setting for the Touch when I didn't a couple a few months ago was 933 and 1.09gb in file size. I'm so NOT a video geek, which is why i give them my DVDs to import for me! LOL!!

What will save you is..... "a few apps".

"My name is Tracey, and I have a lot of Apps." :D

I have 250 on there right now..... LOL!!

You probably will do fine. I keep trying to talk myself into the 32 working for me - so i can get my kids a 32 to share.... and it's not working!

I don't know about Hotmail - i think you have to do something to get it working (paid version?). I haven't used it for multiple years. I do have gmail and my me.com mail on there and it works great!

I figure around 3,000 songs would be my max.

No biggie, I can use yahoo or gmail.

I posted the same question to my brother and this is his response:

The ebooks are not that big a few 100k to 2MB, less than a song, but I only did a quick search looking at ereader.com. You would need an app for the iphone to access and pay for the ebooks. Some eReader apps are free so I guess it depends on where you buy your ebooks. You can also sending your self emails with PDFs or articles and can read them anytime like an ebook. If you wanted to read a web page you could copy the web page and email it to your self so that you don't need to rely on wifi.

Yes you can setup any number of email accounts and they mirror what you get with yahoo or gmail. Just setup your email accounts so they don't delete messages after they have been downloaded the first time.

Based on the amount of things you mentioned the 32G version would be more than adequate for your needs. A car charger and case is a good idea.

Thanks friends,

I have decided to buy the Nano 16BGB ipod. Maybe I'll get the itouch next year.

Thanks for your comments, suggestions.

Monica

You answered your own question. :p
If you can afford it effortlessly and it's no bother to you either way, why would you not get the best (64gb)? Considering it's also going to be something you'll have for 5 years, does it not seem wise?

Call me crazy, but I'm still trying to decide.

I'm back to leaning towards the itouch. However, if I do get one, it will be the 32GB. I don't want to spend more than the price of the 32GB and I'm sure it will be fine, capacity size wise.

It ultimately comes down to money, if you have it.. you get the top dog 64GB. I'm actually wanting a 64GB Touch, my iPhone 2G is so slow when surfing forums compared to the new Touches.

Just to add my tuppence to the thread... I'm one of the rare people who actually prefer the 32GB. I got it last February, before the 64GB was an option, and I am so so so glad I didn't have that decision to make, because I probably would have taken the 64GB, and (though I have more than enough music to fill it up) it would've ultimately proven a waste.

I'm one of those people who likes to be able to randomise every song on their iPod, and not have to fast-forward anything. Currently, I have ~5500 songs, 60 applications, and about 4GB free (tripled from almost nothing after I discovered a brilliant WMA-to-MP3 converter that halved the space used by iTunes's built-in file converter). While I could easily fill up the whole thing again with more music, I could also just as easily free up another 4GB or so just by pruning unwanted songs.

I'd say the trick is what you want your iPod storage for -- if you want to store absolutely everything you have, then go for 64GB; if you're like me and want to store only the stuff you actually intend to listen to, then I've found 32GB to be absolutely perfect, and with tonnes of room to spare for apps (most of which take up very little space, anyway).

Hope that offers a little food for thought. :)

too late?

I have a similar dilemma, although I am not actually considering the 64GB. I only own one iPod currently, it's the 5G Video 60GB. It was great for a while, but after I'd gotten all my cds imported it was already getting too small and then I started putting videos and podcasts on there. If I were to get the 64GB, I would essentially make this one obsolete. As it is, I have to manually manage it, so I am going to have to manually manage any iPod Touch as well.

So my decision is between the 8GB 2G (2nd Generation), 16GB 2G, the 32GB 2G, and the 32GB 3G. Prices are approximately (159, 212, 266, and 297; which correlates to $19.88/GB, $13.25, $8.31, $9.28. For good measure, the 64GB which is only offered as a 3G is $5.96/GB). But the device is so much more than a hard drive. The 2G models will allow me to do just about whatever I need to with them, however, the Voice Control may be nice in the future. The biggest gain for me in the 3G is not with the clock speed but with the ram/memory.

I have about 5GB of podcasts (with a few "sync all" instead of "sync 10 most recent unheard") and 3GB of video on my ipod. With a touch, I would want to flip that ratio, but I would still want more than 8GB because there will be apps and who could own an ipod without music. So, I think my minimum size should be the 16 GB.

The other concern is that there is a good chance they will be updating these at the end of the month with the tablets (why else would they have so much refurbished inventory?), so any 2G ipod Touch will be almost instantly out of date. Unless I get a good deal on craigslist, I think that the best deal for me is going to be the 16GB 2G followed by the 32GB 3G, assuming that I don't decide to wait another month.

Go for the 64. I got the 32gb and I'm out of space already lol. I wish I would've added the extra hundo >_<
With the 64gb...it'll probably sustain it's value for quite a bit, unlike the 32, which is becoming more common now.

I got the 32 GB even though I could afford to buy the 64 because I don't need that much space. I have about 20 GB of music, 10 GB of video, and I could never come close to filling my 80 GB Classic. By getting the 32 GB it will force you to keep changing up your lineup, thus keeping it fresh and new to you

I picked up the new 64Gb Touch for about $320 right after Thanksgiving so
wasn't that much more than the 32 Gb model at the time.

I got a 32 3g from Craigslist for $230. Stoked. Naturally, I was apprehensive about the transaction since I wouldn't be able to return it, but it was all good. I should've done the transaction someplace with internet access, but I was able to check the serial to see if had been registered yet.

I primarily wanted the Touch for the Wi-Fi browsing experience and for the Apps, so the 8GB 2G would have been sufficient. But the speaker sure is handy for iTube type situations, and I'm super happy to have the increased RAM and ~slightly~ faster processor.

Check out the refurb store at Apple right now, as I could've spent as little as 165 on a refurbed 8GB 2G. The 16GB and 32GB refurbed 2G are just $50 and $100 more.

I'm anxious to order a gelaskin to cover the chrome. Not sure if I'm going to go for more protection than that. I have an ipod sock that will work to protect (and clean) the screen when its in my pocket, but I might want something thats on all the time for extra protection for when I drop it. I'm a little biased against the clear plastic cases, since the one I bought for my 5G video ipod scratched the ipod once grit got underneath the plastic.

Well, I'm back. I returned the Nano and ordered the 32GB itouch. Don't jump on me. I decided the 32gb is the right choice for me. ;)

I appreciate everyone comments on this discussion!

Monica

congrats on your choice! i originally had a 32gb 3gs but decided to give that to my mom and bought a 32 gb ipod touch 3. the 64gb can't fill my library anyways so i decided to save $100 and go for the 32gb

Hi!

I would like to purchase a screen protector for my itouch, which should be delivered on Wednesday.

There are soooo many out there with various reviews and prices. What are your suggestions?

Thanks!

If you only want something for the screen, your best bet is the Power Support Crystal Film. You get two for $15, and they look great, don't scratch easily, and are easy to de-fingerprint. You can save a few bucks by getting the DLO films, but in my experience they scratch really easily.

If you're not really picky about getting the "best" screen protectors then...buy them on ebay. It'll probably cost you a few bucks ($2-3) for a pack (2-4 protectors). I personally think that any screen protector will do since they are meant to protect the device from scratches. I've got a few screen protectors (clear, mirror, and privacy) and they've all worked out fairly well. Cheap and reliable. =)

zagg invisibleshields are really good... they are a bit expensive... but its one time investment..

If you are willing to spend a little bit, the Power Support Antiglare/Crystal film sets are great. They cost about 15 dollars for a set of 2.
