SKYPE= my only phone

After being layed off from my job and my AT$T being cut off. I decided to investigate skype. FRING sucked... but then right on time comes the SKYPE iphone app. (yes I am using iphone) So now for 7$ per month I have unlimited calls to US and Canada with a local number for people to call me with caller ID and Voicemail. Its amazing ..... they send me emails when I get voicemail and As far as the AAA Car Repair problem.... I ride a bike and pass many WIFI zones on the way around the Bay Area. I feel unstoppable!!! Average Savings per year $876..... thats a lot for someone who made the poverty level on my taxes last year.

Hi,

My kids have iPhones. Once our agreement w/ AT&T expires and I don't renew our contract, can I continue to use the iPhone with Skype without having to do anything special to the phone? Likewise, can I buy a used iPhone and download and install Skype?

Thanks,

Yobi

If I didn't have an absolutely killer cell plan ($30/month, 500min, 7pm nights and weekends, unlimited text and data) I would likely get a used 1G iPhone, unlock/jailbreak it, get a Skype number and plan, and also a small prepaid SIM for "emergency" outgoing calls and maybe texting (just to be reachable when I am out of WiFi rang - I live in a smallish town in the mid-west and we don't have blanket wifi around here - it's at lots of spots, but I can't move seamlessly from network to network). I would likely end up paying something around $15-20 a month based on my normal usage which would sure beat $50-60 a month, but not worth the hassle compared to $30.

That's my plan exactly. Has anyone done this and calls were routed correctly? I'm concerned with the calls intended for wifi skype going over the 'emergency' sim card by accident, thus rendering the workaround pointless.

Would really love to hear some success stories!!! Here is the mic that I found:

I guess the only problem now is that you will need to have Wi-Fi all the time (or at least at a Wi-Fi hotspot very often) to make VoIP (Skype) called... Wow but if this can be realized, that would be SOOOOO COOL!!!

this is what the mifi is for:)

Its still expensive ($60 a month) but if you substitute it for your home internet then its great
