Oddly enough, the decision that finally pushed me to buy the Macbook was because it was becoming common because I didn't want something that was considered Indie, hippie, or used overwhelmingly by artistic types.

What's wrong with artists? Honestly, it makes me ill when people say s*** like that. The world would suck without us, whether you want to admit it or not. You wouldn't have half the crap you like without creative people.

I think he may mean the hipsters who lounge around at starbucks on their macbooks, but I could be wrong. Either way, nobody should be buying for image...if OSX (which is the main reason for owning a mac imo, after intel) suits you than go for it, if it doesn't then don't. Simple as that.

I'll agree with that, but jeez- to not buy a product that suits you just because of the people who use it is asinine.

Although I am out of college, this doesn't surprise me in the least bit. I remember the says when I was one of thousands to have a Mac in my Computer Science building.... A 12" PB G4. I think it is a great thing for Apple and its consumers.

Huh?

All terrible reasons to buy a computer, which, in the end, is just a tool.

I switched to Mac in September and now I count the number of Macs vs PCs whenever I go to a coffee shop. Lame I know, I need to get a life. :)

I switched to os-x for one specific reason: I was more mending, keeping XP-tablet running and installing everything again than I was working.
After investing over 5000 Euro's in less then 11 months I was really ready for a change. I wanted to make hours typing and not feeding dvd's and cd's with programs. (First was a Toshiba R100, screen went out after less then 3 months, took 4 weeks to repair, when it came back the wireless adapter was out, again 4 weeks. I can't live two months without a computer so I bought a heavy weight cheap ass satelite, but the R100 went again down in it's 4th month and two weeks, that was when I decided to buy a M100 tablet, EXPENSIVE, but able to read documents in portrait, that thing or rather XP-tablet was such a mess that I brought it back within a week and had to argue like cicero to get my money back for that piece of unbelievable junk)

Apple's just happen to be the finest and most versatile tools at this moment.
I know just my 0.02, but with an update my Airport Extreme became a Time Capsule.... my old 15" MBP got 11n after an update, now that are some cool upgrades just for some free software. Ow and Tiger to Leopard update? a cool 129 bucks. hmm, that beats the XP to Vista updates in 4 or 6 versions?

i AM a pen and paper kid! i use my Mac for the uni website, surfing, emails and for papers. in lectures we have paper notes.
Personally, I would use pen and paper for my notes, along with a voice recorder. If nothing else, it helps one learn as they review and transcribe their notes/audio.

Most of the classes that I took at the uni were engineering type classes with lots of charts and graphs. The only device that even came close to paper and pencil many years later was the Newton 2100. But then it still would have been too hard to use IMHO.

my battery seems to konk out sometimes and then i need coffee to recharge it!
Got to watch those caffeine fixes! :D

A boss of mine showed me how to use yellow stickies effectively for taking notes. I attended some seminars a few years ago, where we used yellow stickies to make our notes. Worked well and kept the books clean.

Does your class look like this?

This person has to feel so left out of the group. LOL :D:D

Wow....how about the poor girl with the WHITE MacBook?!? :D In a sea of MacBook Pros and BlackBooks.

-Kevin

I've owned a Blackbook since the first one came out and to be honest the white one wares better. That's why (after learning about the Intel delay ) I just ordered one.:)

I had to struggle with a pen and paper. Took the PowerMac to a lecture once, you ever tried to get one of those out of your rucksack.

Especially when your giving the lecture, I felt like and must have looked like such a tool.

Those were the days.

Indeed, MacBooks (and Macs in general) are becoming much more popular. I recall a few months ago I was traveling and I swear I saw MacBooks everywhere with only a sprinkling of PCs thrown in (4:1 ratio)... not that I saw too many computers in the sea of people in the airport, but it was noticeable. I felt good with my 12" PowerBook on my lap though, showing my long term support of Apple as opposed to all those intel machines :D

Indeed. My friend sticks an Apple sticker on the back of his Toshiba laptop (which is conveniently broken right now) and people sometimes think it's an Apple laptop...usually ignoring me sitting right next to him with an actual Macbook >.> I know he wants one, though. He makes fun of me for having one all the time, but I know he'd like one. He says to me "he'd buy one if he had $3000 to spend, as that's pretty much what you have to spend in order to get a decent one," which is a load of crap, but he's just jealous :)

I don't see many here (in fact, I know of only like two other people who have them, but you never see them with them), and in some ways, it makes me sad that I'm not so individual, but in other ways, it makes me happy they're becoming a bit more mainstream :p

Even the grey-hairs have seen them.

Last week, on Live With Regis & Kelly, Michael Gelman, the Executive Producer, passed his MBP over to Regis to show him something.

Millions saw the Mac for about 3 minutes.
