My last iPhone was the iPhone 4. I have to upgrade since my cell network says my Android phone won't be supported soon. And it only got 2 years of OS support lol. I wanted to go with an iPhone 12 Pro Max, but it seems like there are a lot of complaints about the build quality of the Pro.

I'm having trouble gauging whether there is a normal amount of complaints about build quality i.e. whether people complain about the same amount for every new release or if I should be alarmed at how many people are complaining for this release. Any thoughts?

The build quality is definitely one of the best out there. There are just a few con aspects, such as battery life

I just received my iPhone 12 Pro yesterday afternoon and there are no problems at all. The build quality is typical of Apple in that it is excellent. Battery is fine. It is now 7:20 pm and I took my phone off the charger at 7:30 am and I just got the 20% warning. Screen On time is 10 h 27 m. Screen off was 11 m. This was on WiFi, LTE and 5G. This is much more use than I normally do for a day but I’ve been playing around with the new phone so not unexpected.

Yes. Many complaints every release. But it is also the nature of these types of forums. Commiserating with like minds is therapeutic. As is sharing positivity when we have the chance.

My dad used to say, no expectations, no frustrations. Launches produce HIGH expectations.

The Internet turns the gain control up to maximum for complainers. On any subject. People who are satisfied are much less likely to post. People whose lives are devastated because their phone has a notch or the stainless steel shows a fingerprint will never shut up about it.

There are complaints every year, but for the most part, I think majority of iPhone users are happy with their purchase.

IMO, Apple tends to receive a lot more criticism (some well earned) than the competitors. I think this is because Apple is known to sell premium products for a premium price. They do not sell junk. So, when there are complaints, people tend to be harder on Apple than some other companies.

I tend to be harder on Apple because I am a long time Apple user. I don't give a crap what Samsung is selling or doing with their products. But, if Apple does something that I do not like, I make my opinions known.

I think the iPhone's HW in general is great, and I love the direction that the HW design is going. I never liked the iPhone 6 design, and all the iPhones since, but the 12 is something to look forward to.

I won't get one unless my SE dies, and I will definitely miss my Touch ID, but I love the squared edges of the iPhone 12, and will most likely get the 12 Mini.

Anyways, if you want to give the 12 a try, do it. Worse case, you sell it and probably make a decent amount back.

This is normal... Every year. Someone complains about the tint of display.. phone scratched out of box.. Weak signals. “bendgate”.. iOS quirks. The list goes on.

Good to hear. It made me wonder how many "product ambassadors" come here to stir the pot to deter iPhone adoption. I'm sure there are Apple fans who do the same in Android spaces.

I was a little discouraged to see the battery life regression, but coming from a phone that effectively needs to be plugged in at all times, I'm thinking the 12PM will be a nice upgrade. Ten hours of battery life sounds amazing.

this is a yearly thing. I normally frequent the forums in the months leading up to iPhone day, hang out in the order tracking threads for a bit and then avoid the forums for a few months post launch because it get unbearable wading through the trash posts.

I get it the people who come to a forum like this generally are from two camps, they either just genuinely like a product and want to discuss it OR they seek out a place to air their particular grievance. Easier for me to just avoid for a while once it starts to get really bad.

I added some screen shots in case the complainers are skeptical. ;)

Shock horror that the first generation of the modem for a new cellular data technology isn’t that efficient yet - just as the 4g modem wasn’t in the iPhone 5.

Not to mention that in the west, 5g isn’t fully rolled out yet so the iPhone 5g radio systems are probably working at full power for lost people.

And it’s obviously why pro motion isn’t on the iPhone yet too (battery life concerns).

I haven’t played around with any of the 12s but nearly every professional reviewer says that on balance, they’re great. So I think I know what sort of people to believe :)

Here's a thread with almost 500 posts about yellow-tinted iPhone 3G screens: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/iphone-3g-yellow-screen-issue.516792/

This type of stuff is completely normal around here.
Many more like that can be found around the time the iPhone 5 launched 12 years ago. Just about every thread during this time concerned Scuffgate. I can still recall the user who detailed his path through uwrapping and rejecting 10-12 iPhones inside the Apple store before Apple finally stopped him.

I also remember the ‘micro abrasions’ issue that the jet black iPhone 7 had. Though to be fair that was a legit complaint!

Yes, Ive designed a phone finish that pretty much scratched as soon as it got out of the box (and Cook presumable approved it).

This is normal. People will complain. It's human nature. Rarely do you read something if people are happy with their device. I always believed in looking for solutions rather than complain.
