it's amazing just what you can plug into these mac pro's

this morning i dug out a lacie big500 that i had attached to my dc as backup , lo and behold it's got fw 800 input , so i hooked it up the mp and good lordie , the speedup was amazing

96 gigs in 20 minutes !

i think i'll be in shellshock for most of the week now , fiddling with stuff and trying desperately to get all 4 cores used

eyetv runs like a dream too , can't wait to fill the hd up with top gear re runs ! :)

Geez, I wish I had a MP. Alas, I'm not at one house for any prolonged period of time, so I'd only be able to use it occasionally... good thing I've got my MBP! Good going on the MP though, you're new to Apple and you've got their most potentially powerful machine, so have fun with that baby.

I just installed Paralles... this is amazing. It's a wonder that more people don't use Macs. I can't believe how much more comfortable OSX feels.

Parallels seems to run really fast too. All I really need it for right now is to do quickbooks pro about 10 minutes a day, so its plenty fast for my accounting needs. Going to have to read the manual and see how I can get it to use the printer and such so I can print checks....

I'm loving this machine though.

for a first mac , that's quite a machine !!!

you're lucky you didn't want one in the early 90's - when steve was out - the macs they made then were to say the least over priced and underpowered

i know - i bought several

between the quadras and centris's and early powermacs and all that collective drioss , gawd , we really are spoilt now !!!

a quad processor would've been science fiction in those days

Wow all that for a first mac :)
I am jealous, Very nice setup, and congratulations on your purchase. Welcome to the :apple: world, you're going to love it.

Also, the eject key is on your keyboard :), if you have ordered the mac with two optical drives, press Option + Eject to open the second tray. Hope this helps, and good luck on your new mac!

Congrats on your new machine, Sean. I switched 2 years ago (to a Mac Mini, but I've had a Pro since April this year) and within a few weeks I'd dumped my Windows machines totally and thesedays just have the Pro (and a MacBook).

Very interesting what some people have done with connecting up extra monitors. Not something I've thought of myself, but I was wondering about an Eye TV or something. With the default Nvidia 7300GT is it possible to hook up a second monitor and use that as the destination for Eye TV (or equiv) output?

Enjoy :)

Either Port Of Your Mac Pro Video Card Will Support 1920 x 1080 HDTV Screens

Yes either port will drive a HDTV or second monitor up to 1920 x 1200 perfectly. You can target EyeTV recordings to play full screen on the HDTV in the EyeTV preferences. A simple command + 0 and boom your recording is on the HDTV screen.

New 2008 Mac Pro Won't Be Released Before August And Perhaps As Late As September

Hey multimedia, what time can we expect an update if it is coming today?
In your dreams. Won't happen for another month at least and perhaps as late as sometime in September. Intel probably can't drop the price Apple pays for their processors any sooner than they will for any of Apple's competitors due to the political ruckus that was probably caused among all of Intel's customers when they gave Apple an exclusive on all the 3GHz Clovertowns in March. So Apple can't really ramp up production on the next round of Macs until August when the bottom radically drops out of Intel's processor prices.

My guess is Intel has a huge queue of orders based on the new pricing that they will execute at the end of July to all their customers which will cascade into a new set of choices for consumers of way more powerful computers with no increase in prices this Fall. 2008 will probably be the year when 4 core desktops become the norm among everything above $1k.

I am only guessing - not predicting. I'm waiting as long as it takes and that might include when it ships with Leopard - especially if it's not announced until September.

i see you're a fan of eye tv

me too - 100%

i've had the usb 2 eye tv teratec cinercgy for a few years now

TOTALLY revolutionized my viewing habits , the things amazing

who needs a pvr ?

and the integration with front row is awesome

i wish apple would buy elgato !!!

I know we're going slightly off topic here... but I'll carry on anyway :)

Thanks, Multimedia, for your helpful comments about EyeTV and a second monitor. Flappo also appears to be a fan. I'm in the UK and I've heard mixed reviews of Freeview (DTT) reception in this country. Guess it won't improve until they switch off the anologue single which won't happen in my area until 2012!

Is there anybody in the UK reading this who has any comments to make about EyeTV (especially reception?) If this is going to turn into a long discussion I'll stop hijacking Sean's thread and start a new one

I seem to have problems with itv and channel 4 , but other channels are very impressive.

When i've recorded them I export them as Mp4's and the quality is almost as good as the original but a 3rd the size.

Plus having the eyetv dongle attached to my mac pro means I now have infra red remote control , just wonder if you can get front row working through the same thing ?

Overall a brilliant product and a definite buy for any mac user imo.

Stick your face inside that beautiful machine and take a deeeeeep breath. That's the smell I live for. Delicious.

Edit: Well, I wouldn't say I live for it, but it's definitely an awesome smell.
