as I have said before, people need to stop finding a way to have all the iPhone features without the phone. Just because you can't afford the 2 year agreement, doesn't mean Steve Jobs is going to listen to all of your demands, especially since most of the iPod touch owners, don't complain about this crap.

People will want to get the new Touch that don't want/need an At&T cell phone, but do want the best touchscreen media player/PDA/Pocket Game Player out there. They'll buy the new one over the old one because of the volume controls, speaker and potential of remote control over the headphone cable. It helps that today a 16gb can be bought for what an 8gb sold for yesterday.

Right thing? I wanted GPS and had no interest in an iPhone. The iPhone's GPS is crippled for navigation anyway. It would have been a $5 chip that would have meant far more sales of new Touches to consumers.

So count me as one who doesn't agree with you. The Touch is NOT just an iPod.

I fully agree. It's a newer model that can be had with the same capacity for less than the old model, and it has added features over the old (whethere they are few in number or not). I for one will definitely buy it (it's ordered actually) because:

1. You're getting more for less (if you havent noticed, prices on older models have NOT dropped...well, yet at least)
2. The older models are, well, old, and these newer models have more features and cosmetic changes. Who honestly buys an older model for anything when a new model has just come out (and the newer model is cheaper and has more stuff than the old one)?

And also, those who will buy it were probably holding off on the older model when they heard rumors (LOL) of a new model coming out. That would be people like me who wanted to get a product at the beginning of its product cycle so their money gets put to good use.

the issue is it is not an ipod. Yes they did a dumb naming thing (probably because the ipods sell so well) . I have an ipod, and no urge to upgrade it. The touch is a perfect little PDA (I do wish it had the camera and even gps though). Not all of us like/want cell phones. We have them, we don't like AT&T - all sorts of reasons the iphone is not right for us. So they screwed up the marketing, but made a great product.

Arguably, at the time the iPod Touch was released, it was just an iPod (with fancy controls and better screen). But a few software updates and iTunes app store down the road, and presto-chango!

Once the iTunes app store was public and the Touch could use it, there was no going back.

Add me to the list of people who consider the iPod Touch *not* an iPod.

Yes, you have to buy that separately.

But it is also available in the lower-priced, $29 earbuds too.

For the bean counters among us, the $29 earbuds with remote and mic are exactly the same price as the $29 replacement standard-issue earbuds.

My bet is that the mic+remote earbuds will eventually totally replace the original earbuds out of the box, once the existing stock of original earbuds is exhausted.

it's still just an iPod, quit playing yourself.

Define what you mean by "just an iPod". What is an iPod? It is clearly already much more than any of its currently in-production "just an iPod" siblings.

IMO, an "iPod" is whatever Apple decides to define it as. It's already a far cry from what it was when very first iPods were released, and it would be foolish to think that it won't continue to evolve moving forward.

I don't see why people want to get a new iPod touch yet when there are only a few new features and most of them are minor changes to it's outside. In my opinion, they are making it look too much like the iPhone. I mean, I know that it is the iPhone with out a SIM card, but still, it's just an iPod and I think that Apple did the right thing not adding GPS to it, after all if people want GPS, they they probably will want the iPhone anyway.
I hate cell phones. They are an intrusion on a person's privacy. So iPhone isn't something I want. However I want the apps functions and net connectivity and the fuller screen, because at the moment I have an old Nano.

I would like a camera on the iPT, but if there isn't one I can deal with it. I don't need GPS or 3G.

iPT is NOT just an iPod - it's a PDA/browser/mp3 player/video device.
Define what you mean by "just an iPod". What is an iPod? It is clearly already much more than any of its currently in-production "just an iPod" siblings.
It's just a Shuffle with a few extra, useless functions no one wants.

I'm kind of confused as to what the issue is. Some people don't like the fact that people like the iPod touch? Why do you care? If it's not for you, then don't buy one... but why rain on the parade of other people who it is suitable for?

I cannot afford a data plan, so I can't have an iPhone... unless I want to spend $400 on... which I'm not wiling to do for just 8GB when I won't even use it as a phone. However, I am very frequently in places with free WiFi and I don't often have my MacBook with me... so this works for me. If you like to have a decent amount of music on you, a portable game system, access to cool/useful (or stupid) applications, and to wireless internet when available... like ME... then the iPod touch is perfect.

Whether people want the new one or not is just personal taste. I'm buying a new one because I want it... it's that simple.... if I'm going to spend money on something, then I'm gonna get what I want.

I also think that GPS on the touch would be extremely useful. What it has is good enough for me... being able to show roughly where you are and how to get somewhere. I often find myself in places (cities usually) where I'm trying to find a coffee place, or a restaurant, or someones house, or whatever... and if I can have a little GPS-ish device with me that will help me out, then why not?

I don't get why people are borderline furious with the fact that others don't have the exact same wants and needs as them.

Well, why I was originally saying, and what TEG said is that it is dumb of people to expect the iPod touch to have a built-in camera, microphone and GPS because it is an iPod, and Apple will have limits on what they will put into it.
After all, Apple wants people to buy the iPhone for the camera, GPS mic. If they added every feature exclusive to the iPhone on to the touch, people will ditch the iPhone for the iPod touch.

same with me, i can't pay the monthly fee since im with tmobile right now so the touch is for ppl who want an iphone without the phone. granted, there is no gps or anything, but how would you get maps? some ppl wont use it, so 1Gb of space is wasted. 3g is how ppl get maps, and gps is how they get the coordinates to see where they are on the map.

Can you program apps for the ipod shuffle?
Can you surf the internet on the ipod classic?
Can you recieve emais on your nano?

You, it is termed an ipod, but it is more than that. It is a major part of Apple's future in mobile technology. Also don't expect something like a camera to be out of the question. I don't now how small it would have to be, but you probably could attach some accessory that is a camera itself.

Apple knows that while the iPhone is it's major point of the two, that the iPod Touch has some major value. It will most definelty be better for applications that take more because the iPhone ha to worry about being phone. Apple can compete with Nintendo and Sony in the gaming market with the iPod Touch and iPhone. And the great thing for them is that they won't have only games. It won't have to be focused on one thing but it has multiple major media uses.

I can't afford $80/month for a phone. I can't afford to throw away $2000 for two years of phone service. I don't want to be on AT&T's gimped network when Verizon's is so much better.

Proof:

Boy Genius Report said:
In every region of the country surveyed, Verizon was either the sole winner or tied for first place.

And even better:

Boy Genius Report said:
Surprisingly, AT&T, the largest [scammer] US provider, does not show up anywhere in the leader board...

But, I still want the iPod and the touch screen and the music and the movies. Done deal.

I disagree with the whole "no one would buy an iPhone" thing.

Even if the iPod Touch were identical to the iPhone minus being a wireless phone, people would still buy both.

The price. Buying a new iPhone with a plan is less than a like iPod Touch with increased functionality.

The functionality. You buy an iPhone if you have a data plan or a need for one... you buy an iPod touch if you want the stuff an iPhone has but can't afford a plan or just have no need for one.

The iPod touch ISN'T just an iPod. It's a multi-functioning device due to it's media, gaming, application, AND internet capabilities. Though I guess that's an argument... an "iPod" used to be a lot less than what it is now... so maybe the other iPods will get these capabilities, and then the iPod Touch would be an "iPod"... but as for now, it goes above and beyond what an iPod currently is.

it's not an i-pod

The issue is poor marketing. An Ipod was a device to play/organize music. a nano was a small one. When they start marketing any sort of device (and I think the touch is a pda) under the name ipod it just makes it more difficult to discuss/find the product you need. I see their reasons Ipod sells well, so call everything an ipod, but it really doesn't help and does hurt in the end. We're stuck in humpty dumpty land - an ipod is anything I says it is.

I'm sorry that this is a rant but I just had to make my point. But really, it's just an iPod.

Who agrees with me?

I kind of. If you already have an touch. If those features arnt important to you then dont get it. My touch just died on me, so I'm saving for a new 32GB touch. I'm glad the price went down though.

I do hate the fact that they are making the touch look like a damn gaming device. they can do that but also show e-mail web brosweing music and movies. Do the same type of ad they use for the iphone but on the ipod touch

Its not Just an iPod.

It can surf the web, play video's, play games, send and recieve email, sync calendars and contacts with your PC.

It is far more a PDA than an MP4 Player.

7 years ago it was just an typical MP3 playerwith 5GB of HD storage. 4 Years ago, they were one of the first to add a color screen with photo support. 2 Years ago they added video support. a year ago, the iphone came out and few months later the touch came out and it changed how we view the ipod for ever.

The touch in my opinion is like a handled mac, (a PDA like) you can do a lot then just listen to music. Get a shuffle if yopu just want to pay for music nothing else.

so what do you want? data service for free? seriously

No, but thwtas why people are getting the touch over the iphone. To some 70 bucks a month is way to expensive when ATT's other plans for the same features start out at 40-50 bucks a month

I agree completely. The touch has so many new things its more or less apple's first hand held mac.

a local run mac store down here has last years ipod touch 32GB for $379. For $20 more you can get this years 32GB model. Why not spend the extra $20.

I'm waiting to see if there are any problems like last years screen problem. I'm hoping it uses the same screen as the iphone. I've notice the iphone's screen has better contrast, color and brightness hues then the touch.

i am with u dude the i pod touch rox the pirson that made this coment is most likley that she cant afford one and she wants one................:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::D:eek::p:cool::apple::eek::eek:

So I live in the boonies where AT&T doesn't work, and am replacing my PDA. I was going to get the ipod touch, but like the camera option of the phone(and am surprised it is the same price). Which would be better as a PDA the touch or phone without phone service (I usually use wifi)

iPhone is useless, you will pay more for a serviceless 16GB iPhone than you will for a 32GB Touch. You could go with a iPhone (non 3G), jailbreak it and then use it on a different carrier. But the 3G iPhone is not for you the moment you say you don't have AT&T.

Interesting that WB2Colorado is the original posters name, yet WB2 is a major TV station here in Colorado, wonder if they are trolling for opinions to report in a story?

I bought a 32GB Touch v2 last week, the device would be perfect IMO if you could get a data only plan so you could be always connected if you wanted to be and not just rely on finding an open WAP. Even say a $10 a month 1GB plan would be very worthwhile for most people, when at home etc you use wireless so you can limit your cell carrier data usage. You don't need the data service to be always on, just need it to be always available. Do a check of email on the bus, look up a google map online, watch some youtube videos when stuck at the airport etc. Makes the device much more productive without being too much of an iPhone competitor.

Remember Amazon basically has this for their Kindle, actually they have free internet, just the device is really only good for downloading books and not truely surfing the web as the interface etc is designed to be an ebook first and everything else second.
