During the keynote where the new laptops and LED Cinema Display was announced, SJ did state that they would be building the mini Displayport into all future Apple computers.

Yes, this is true. Do you think they will add a full sized display port on the Mac Pro or will they keep DVI? Is DVI dead?

DVI is far from dead, most quality and consumer monitors still have it, many consumer monitors even still have vga. Another display port and the need for even more adapters was just what the world needed.

Who knows, in 2 years it may share the fate of Apples old "ADC" display connector.

I still haven't understood the allure of Apple's displays. The connectors for the new notebooks on the new display is kinda neat, but these things are severely overpriced. I think I saw a 26" ViewSonic monitor with 1920x1080 res for about $500 a few weeks ago. I constantly see 24" monitors with the same resolution in the $300 range. They usually have both DVI and D-sub, not to mention some even have HDMI (a connector actually in use by someone outside Cupertino).

So I just really don't get Apple's train of thought. My MacBook Pro has a DVI port and came with a free D-sub adapter. The new ones have a port that, as I said, NOBODY uses (never heard of it before the keynote) and doesn't come with an adapter of any sort.

Oh yeah, it's also the attack of "you'll buy glossy and you'll like it!" I'm all for people choosing either glossy or matte, but Apple is going to ridiculous lengths to decide what's best for us. Some of us really really really don't like to dodge freakin' reflections just because someone tells us the colors are more realistic. I personally love fake colors that I can actually see, which was one of the biggest improvements I saw in the advent of LCD screens for both TVs and monitors. Now, Apple is playing "move along people! Nothing to see here!"

I just really don't get any of this. Someone talk me down and tell me why Apple isn't bat#%it crazy in the monitor department.

if you haven't read it before, Cinema Displays use S-IPS panels, not the usual TN or (less usual) -PVA. And after taking a look at Eizo's offerings, I've started thinking Apple's prices aren't all that bad....

I get that their supposedly better and look great (I'm using an older one at work right now), but I just haven't seen the difference in them being worth all that extra money. They're also semi-ditching a technology (DVI) that isn't even used on every computer yet. My mom's brand-new Dell that I got her last year with built-in video still uses the old D-sub connector. I kinda understand it on the laptop side due to space, but it still seems a little premature (just as the death of FireWire does on the MacBook).

Not to mention Mike that the 26" you saw with the same rez as all the 24" won't be nearly as sharp as the 24" monitors since they are stretching the pixels out to get a bigger size. You won't see more, you will just see bigger.

I think that's fine for many people, but I wouldn't want to go that route myself.

The big difference will come in color shifting while the monitor is on and in use, and during long periods of operation. The Dell Ultrasharps that my paper bought for the designers are crap now. They were fine about two years ago but now with the backlight bleeding, weird hues, and blotchy/dim panels they are just crap.

I do the color critical work for the photos and the print house does it for everything else, so the paper still looks good.

Either way, the more color accurate you want the panel, the more it's going to cost. The more TV like you want the panel, the cheaper it will be.... unless you are looking for an HD broadcast monitor.

It's the begging of the end for the Non-glossy Pro Displays from apple.
I didn't' think they would get rid of the 23" until Macworld when there are ready to replace it.

Same here. I thought Apple would have made two lines, the glossy ones for the MacBooks and possibly the Mac Mini, and the non-glossy higher end ones for the Mac Pro and MacBook Pros (via adaptors) that carried both DVI and display port.

I was hoping for the company to do that, and replace the matte ACDs with newer matte ACDs.

This really Stinks because I was looking for a Companion to my 2005FPW.

ADC was pretty dumb. Let's hope mini display port won't end up like that.

I don't think ADC was dumb, it was actually pretty nice... monitor cable, power cable and usb hub all in one. The problem was no one else used it. Time will tell if this mini display port or even display port will be adopted by the industry, or if it still will be a port you'll need a number of adapters to get anything to work in 1, 2, 3 ... years.

ADC was DOA. Modern video cards are already pushing the MacPro's PCI-E bus power limit. Adding a 150w display to that power draw would not have been practical. Anyone for a 2Kw power supply?

Some, Yes, if you only consider the 75W each PCIe slot can provide. Cards that can stay within this limit do exist, such as the current model's base graphics card.

But the additional power requirements of performance oriented cards, are able to be handled by 6 pin PCIe power cables or the 8 pin versions.

Huh?

Let's assume that the Mac Pro will use 125VAC @13A. This is what the PSU draws, not what it provides (980W). That's 1625W. Add 150W, so now you have 1775W. A 15A circuit can provide 1875W, so it's under the rated limit of the electrical circuit.

this is just stupid, I am one customer was in the process of buying a 23'' display this week as I have a macbook pro with dvi port and wanted to get a display to work with. now what the heck do I do!!

I know i will not be the only one in this situation, I wish In ireland they announced sale of the current stock of displays as I would happliy get one asap!

I was in the same boat as you, but had a last minute change of heart. I went with the Samsung 245T. After calibrating it, it is an amazing monitor. With more I/O options and is much more adjustable.

At least orders for the 24" LED Display are now being taken. This still doesn't help Mac Pro users though!

I wonder why Apple hasn't changed this page yet? http://www.apple.com/displays/cinema/specs.html

Any ideas for a MacWorld release?

This is for you too ipodrocker.

The page may still be up because other vendors are still carrying the displays.

They may not be top notch compared to the brighter, crisper LED display but they are still amazing in my book.

And since I got mine for around $550-$600 with tax I find them well worth the price. Might go out and get a second just before they are completely gone.
