Flash sites run pretty good on my G5 2GHz iMac but on my 1.5GHZ G4 Powerbook they run noticeably slower, even more so if I use FireFox. So I can only imagine that flash would run painfully slow on an iPhone so maybe it's best its not there.
Maybe recent news that the iPhone is the 4th most popular browser by OS and therefore the most popular mobile browser will encourage sites to re-encode their crappy-flashy sites to HTML and their streaming video pages to 264?
Maybe it's the smaller screen, but YouTube seems to look better on my iPhone than on computer anyway.

Ok, here it is:

Steve is telling you all that flash is old. Apple are now trying to prove a point that their touch platform, namely mobile Safari will still succeed while still 'lacking' flash.

Think about it, Apple release iPhone, it quickly becomes a media frenzy. No Flash? - "No we're not implementing it on iPhone, because we're just that good."

OMG Everyone, Apple's 'miracle' phone doesn't support flash. - free press. (as if they need it - they take their site offline for 1-2 hours, and the whole blogesphere goes nuts.)

They are changing the market yet again. Just as they did with computer hardware all those years ago, only this time, it's software.

Who knows, flash may not be mainstream in 3-4 years time .. it may be running on Microsoft Silver light technology.

To point your attention to a snippet from Apple Insider:

"Also on Wednesday, Microsoft released a beta version of Silverlight 2, its competitor to Adobe's Flash for rich, cross-platform media content on the web, and dropped hints that the software could eventually make its way to Apple's iPhone.

"We're releasing Silverlight on more and more mobile platforms, said Scott Guthrie, Microsoft's Corporate Vice President, Developer Division. "We'll release it on anything with an SDK."

iPhone SDK anyone? ...

soon enough the floodgates will open and pour onto our faces heaps of applications to the point where flash will become a thought of the past :)

I had a short lunch the other day and wanted to pre-order some burritos from Chipotle.com - No luck, their site is flash only.

Other than that, I've never missed flash on my iPhone.

I think sites like Chipotle should cease with the dependance on flash. In Chipotle's case, it's annoying, not useful - in fact, it hinders the use of their website.

couldn't agree more.... maybe someday they'll realize that.

Well, the iPhone's web browser is already used 50 (FIFTY) times more than any other mobile's-- there really isn't any reason at all for Apple to add flash support.
