This is one of those things where you'd have to judge it for yourself. You can tell a difference in almost anything that is not identical when looking at them right beside each other.

Way to gloss over one of the biggest strengths of blu rays - the Audio!!!! Lossless 7.1 audio over compressed 2 channel audio isn't even a contest. Bluray > iTunes
The optical interfaces (S/PDIF) of all current Mac models do not support uncompressed or lossless 5.1 or 7.1 audio. So the hypothetical iTunes 5.1 and 7.1 audio does go nowhere. So what should the majority of Mac users use? Expensive extensions via FW800/Thunderbolt?

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say. I will NEVER purchase a 1080P movie from iTunes, even if it looked better then blu-ray for the simple fact that the HD sound quality isn't there. Nothing like true uncompressed audio coming through Paradigm's Studio Series.

Well to each his own I guess, I will gladly watch on my 1080p Panasonic Plasma with a logitech speaker system delivering 5.1 for me the visual is more important and accessibility. a 5 GB file that looks almost as good as a 10~ GB file is incredible too.

Not to mention Blu-ray can provide much higher quality audio than iTunes!
DTS-HD master audio vs plain dolby digital?

Well if they put blurry in a mac, then they would upgrade the optical out wouldn't they???

Logitech speaker system is weak sauce man.

Is that with optical in ? Don't u tell me ur using stereo analog crap

I like how people are clinging to the fact that a single still is close to single still in a blu ray.

Most compression does appear more in motion, not to mention besides a vastly better picture quality the audio is completely unmatched in Blu Ray.

Exactly, compression algorithm may simply skip half the frames. That would give you 50% compression. All remaining frames would look exactly like the original ones in the type of comparison done by Arstechnica. Yet, the quality of the live picture would still be 2x worse than the original. I suspect that most people who argue that the quality of the streaming video is almost as good as BD simply have not had a chance to watch movies on decent hardware. The "good enough" logic obviously works for some people in some circumstances but Netflix offers a great opportunity for watching movies from BD disks without any hassle. Passing this opportunity in favor of much lower quality (and more expensive too) iTunes is simply travesty.

This is grossly inaccurate statement. As Arstechnica reported, iTunes movie that they tested had size 3.8GB. And here are the sizes of some BD movies (info provided by BDInfo):

Bandwidth for Apple's datacenter is not the reason as it is lower than $0.02 for GB (http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/pricing/). Seems like they are optimizing for the total viewing experience where reasonable download times are important. I expect them to increase the bitrate when the majority of people have 6 - 12Mbps home connections.

Ever heard of HDMI? You know - that useless standardised port that you can get a shiny dongle for?

even works with Thunderbolt

And don't forget 'the majority of people' using HDMI to connect their Mac minis or AppleTVs.

Yes, DTS-Master is a valid reason to have Blu-Ray - and if you have no output for that don't assume that 'the majority of Mac users' doesn't have that.

I think Apples 1080p is doing as good as any other 1080p stream, but its still not Bluray period. Furthermore, nobody ever seems to mention the audio side of things. Apple and others are still stuck in 640k Dolby 5.1 land. Bluray comes bearing TruHD, Uncompressed PCM, and DTS-HD-MA lossless audio..... and yes, they utterly destroy AC3 or AAC dolby 5.1.

Quick test: Is your main TV above the fireplace? If you answered yes, then you don’t get to complain about quality.

At 8 feet and a 50" screen I doubt most people will notice.

Did they mention renting 1080P content?

Its absolutely noticeable during any scene with a lot of motion. The whole picture becomes blocky like large blocks. Blu-ray does not suffer this.

You really think the less than 10% of itunes users that have macs is the only people using it.

If you followed the discussion we do not talk about 5.1 or 7.1. We talk about lossless or uncompressed 5.1 or 7.1 audio. Most people do not use HDMI via Thunderbolt/FW800, and not every device supports audio via HDMI or has other restrictions. Do not expect that consumers solve so many connection problems.

Aha, someone else has noticed the flaw in this comparison.

Where are the comparisons of fast-moving scenes or those with explosions of contrast and light? That's where the compression rate breaks apart, not in slow moving still frames.

Very true - the image posted is a static, rather simple graphic.

Detailed, moving pictures are the important differentiators (think of a forest scene with the wind moving the branches and leaves, with the camera panning to follow a character in motion).

this is big news? a bluray 7GB movie holds more information than a 2.5GB iTunes movie. of course you'll lose some detail and the bluray SHOULD look better.

As someone else pointed out, 30 GB to 40 GB is typical for a BD (but unfortunately, she used a table that had lots of extra info that obscured the point).

Here are the BD rips sitting on my home server waiting to watch:

Well if they put blurry in a mac, then they would upgrade the optical out wouldn't they???

The optical standard does not have sufficient bandwidth for better audio - Apple would have have to create an incompatible output.

The standard for higher bandwidth audio is HDMI - the same signal that you'd send to your AV crossbar receiver.

People who haven't heard lossless BD sound on a good surround sound system don't understand this. The lossless sound also has incredible dynamic range - many times I've been startled by a sudden crash or bang or boom from a movie (and the cats run for cover as well).

This is one valid reason that Bluray are not going to go anywhere soon. Some hardcore fanboys would vote me down because they really believe content with any rounded physical media called disc, is dead .. just because Steve told us so, if Bluray were pioneered by Apple, they would surely change their tune. What an utter frivolity.

Sure, iTunes 1080p download (and all that illegal MKVs to be fair) reduce the video size signficantly while reducing the quality at minimum size. A 8:1 compression ratio maybe reduce quality around 20%. But that's not just the point. Just because Macbook Air and ultrabooks doesn't carry optical storage doesn't mean they're dead like floppy. Floppy didn't bring any advantage in thumbdrive triumph, Bluray does, even in terrabytes era like this.

iTunes HD downloads are ridiculously expensive, you can get the full blown Bluray version for the same price, or even cheaper from Amazon. So convince me why would I pick digital download over physical media for the same price?

I love movies collection, physical movies. I don't mind the space taken by lots and lots collection of BD or even DVDs, those are collector items, so it is SUPPOSED to take space in your home. I love a nice printed media, enjoyable postcards because it feels I OWN the movie rather than pale m4v files.

I could always sell my BDs whenever I want to free up space. Can I do that with iTunes downloads? Might as well give a copy to your friend as much as you want just like MP3s, but then it would be illegal while selling my BDs is not.

I could always simply exchange my BD collection with my friend, I borrow his, he borrow mine, and all will be returned next week. Nice and simple, no need pay for 2 days iTunes rent.

Noticeable or not, BD quality are still better than any encoded/compressed videos, plain and simple. Granted, some BD titles had suck AQ/PQ, but so would the ripped/iTunes version if that's the case. So actually you always ensure yourself to get the best thing you can with BD. Plain and simple. Don't watch BD on 11" MBA or even 13" MBP. You need something like 50"+ display to appreciate the difference.

Even if the new iPad had the ability to playback BD, you can even appreciate BD quality even more, remember it has more than 1080p, so any fullHD videos would be scaled up. iTunes 1080p will even noticeably looks crappier than the original BD master. All compression artifacts would exposed even more on super high resolution display.

Yeah! They could also save on the bitrate if they got rid of the colour too!

Your supposition is completely incorrect. There's no skip-framing happening in the encoding here.

I've watched may fair share of both, and I'd be willing to wager that in most situations, at the average users distance, they'd never be able to tell the difference between BR and these iTunes files. If anything, these stills are AMPLIFYING any problems, not suppressing them.

As someone else mentioned above, the BR spec is over 5 years old. A better compression can do more with less- so even though BRs bitrate is in the 45Mbps range, a lot of that could just be wasted using an old, inefficient codec.

Once video quality crosses over to the "good enough" level then all codec and compressions discussions are pointless. After the quality is "good enough" then it's all about easy of use, getting the content you want everywhere and all the time. Just look at the adoption rates of YouTube vs BluRay.
