I assume by disable sync, you mean the option that reads "Prevent iPhones, iPods and iPads from automatically syncing"? If so then I'll try it out.

But I can't find the option to enable drag and drop. Where is that?

If you check "Manually manage music" in the device setting, that should do it. After that just drag the music folder/file to the device.

Not liking Cloud concept

Living in NYC and commuting underground...and or being dependent on third party ISPs to get your content via a cloud is just not doing it for me. You can forget watching Netflix in the subway on that 40 min commute.

There are many times where you cannot get internet or phone isp access even walking around NYC or in Central Park. Plus being throttled with terms like "unlimited" when it's really not.... makes getting YOUR stuff really frustrating.

I don't understand..iPods years ago had 80GB to 160 GB but an iPhone 64 GB.

I want all my **** with me. I don't want to have my special 12" euro or japanese remixes reclaimed and sent to me via their iTunes version of the song. I also want MY videos on my person...when traveling or commuting..etc.

Since it's the year 2012...and i've been collecting my own music (non mainstream) AND videos since 1996 when MP3s first came out...I would think we would have an available or swappable TB flash disks around now. Why does Apple not want you to access your own ****? and locally by upping the HD space on iPads or iPhones? Not like it's a far out impossibility.

Is it really too much to ask for? HD space? I mean really?

You're comparing disk drives to SSD drives. Huge difference in price / size ratios.

And spacing out words to curse? Classy...

Dumb is a bit harsh.

I bought my 4S and turned it on, stuck in my iCloud details and all my mail, contacts texts, camera roll etc was all there. Just needed the Apps which I could access under recently purchased (which is held in iCloud). Also my photos I take sync accross my iMac and iPad.

Seems pretty smart to me?

No. All that can be done by local device backups. The iCloud functionality is either redundant to what Google already does, or is pointless. It's a pointless attempt at who knows what.

And I assume that we are supposed to just ignore any examples to the contrary. :)

There aren't any. It's just a crappy service. Doesn't bother me, it's easy to turn off once you realize how dumb it is.

I appreciate your explanation. It's crappy and dumb because it is. Don't know how anyone could question that logic. Why would anyone want to sync their information and documents across multiple devices? What a dumb, crappy concept.

There is no way the functionality that you're responding to could have been achieved with local device backups. Not sure what planet you're living on. Nor does google provide any mechanism for backing up games, automatically syncing settings, etc. You're smoking crack.

Which probably has been rewritten countless of times. iTunes is fine. It needs some changes certainly like while you are changing tags, you can't do anything else, which is nonsense in 2012. But overall it runs quite fast, it's very responsive compared to iTunes 9 or 8, and it does almost everything I want to do. It needs video controls like brightness/contrast for videos purchased from the store imho because I'm sick of installing Quicktime 7.6 just for that, it needs a better iCloud integration, which seems to be coming already and I'd probably ask for faster usage of the store (if possible).

has nothing to do with how fast it runs. it's ridiculous to have all these cluttered controls and iphone hub. the app has been taped together with new features for ages. it's time for a new design

It's called iTunes. They sync back to iTunes when you sync your iPhone, or you can get them from iTunes in the first place. What planet are you living on? Settings are what's backed up through the mobile device backup functionality in iTunes. Calendar, Email and Contacts are handled through Google, so the data is synced immediately back to Google, so if the phone winds up in a ditch somewhere, the data is still retrievable from Google. No need to even back that up yourself.

If you think that a hardwire, device-specific sync is in any way comparable to a wireless, device-agnostic sync. Well. Okay then. *pats you on the head*

It does the same thing. It backs up what's on my phone. Why should I back it up to iCloud, when I can back it up locally? There's nothing in there that is super critical to have remotely if my laptop and backup drive went south simultaneously, it's just settings basically.

You clearly don't understand what iCloud does. That's okay, but don't try and get in a discussion with people that do understand how it works / what it's used for.

You wanna go at it? I'll go feature by feature:

iTunes in the cloud: Great on the computer. Useless on the device. Just sync. iTunes Match is rather pointless, as you can just store the stuff locally, and not be dependent on having Wifi. iTunes Match over 3G is nuts, as it would kill bandwidth like crazy.

Photo Stream: Tried that one, it doesn't work very well, it's really annoying to manage, much easier to use Dropbox for quick uploads, and Image Capture to move the images to the local machine.

Documents in the cloud: Only works with iWork in the first place, so it's useless out of the get go.

Apps, Books, and Backup: It makes no sense to sync apps, as you'd want different apps on the iPhone and iPad. I know I will have a lot less apps on my iPad than I do on my iPhone, and different apps too. Backup is pointless as it can be done locally.

Calendar, Mail, and Contacts: Doesn't really work with Google. GMail already syncs mail and contacts, and Calengoo works great with Google Calendar on the iPhone.

Find my iPhone: one useful feature. I have it turned on just in case for some crazy reason, I can't find my phone like a normal person. Obviously a very, very rare usage scenario. No one that I know uses or would use find my friends, most of them don't have iPhones.

So yeah, like I said, you don't really understand it. Again, that's fine.

How do I not understand it? That's just a generic statement that holds no weight, because you're obviously wrong. I went through it point by point, and proved why it is useless.

Could you please expand on this post? If this works as I think it does, I'd instabuy an Apple router / Time Capsule.
Since Snow Leopard, OS X uses something called WakeOnDemand.

That combined with an Airport Extreme or a Time Capsule provides this feature.
Bonjour broadcasts are "keep" alive my the router. When another machine tries to connect to that sleeping machine, that machine will be woken automatically.

Works with all the built in bonjour stuff (iTunes, File Sharing, Screen sharing, etc) and for your own custom stuff you can us dns-sd from the command line to add bonjour info for other apps.

You went through the marketing points of it. You didn't mention any of the stuff that it's actually being used for, like syncing documents across iOS and Mac OS devices (hint, it's not just for iWork anymore), syncing game position across multiple iOS devices, syncing settings / statuses across iOS devices. Your rant is absolutely 100% the flavor of someone who read about a 1st gen press release of a product and decided they didn't like it, without actually trying it or doing any research into how it's really being used.

To be fair, one thing I will say is good about iTunes and iCloud is Match. For £20 a year you get a complete cloud backup of your music, plus the ability to download or stream on demand with compatible devices. It does have a tendency to mess up, like for some reason some of my newly purchased tracks are listed under 'matched', and it has a nasty habit of uploading tracks available on the iTunes Store, but other than that it is the only feature keeping me using iTunes.

Dropbox, don't use Gamcenter. It's a bunch of junk. I love my iPhones, but iCloud is just junk.

What's the point? I have Google Music for free, my iPhone has everything on it anyways.
