Don't you know, they got fired when Scott Forstall was let go. Chief Jony took over.

iTunes UI has been a crumbling disaster LOOOONG before Scott was let go.

Guys, quit acting like the poor UI design decisions happened the moment Scott was fired. Apples UI had been slowly getting worse in some regards for a long time, while both Scott and Steve were there. iTunes didn't instantly become a mess. They were ruining the sidebar while Steve was around, removing the color from it, hiding it by default, etc.

Some of you guys really have a poor recollection of history. Apples UI design team had been getting incredibly stagnant, predictable, and downright uninspiring towards the end of Scott's tenure. Say what you will about the current design language introduced by Alan Dyes team, love or hate, but it was the most excitement and vision the Human interface team had delivered for years, arguably since 2007 with the introduction of iOS. After that they stood still, made some really questionable and downright poor design decisions.

Just feel the need to clear that up, as someone who's been following this stuff since the late 90s. While Apples HI team has done brilliant work, they have never been perfect.

I don't like the color hijacking, either, and fortunately, there is a way to opt out: iTunes Menu > Preferences > General: Uncheck "Use custom colors for open albums, movies, etc." in the Views section.

Awesome, thank you. Guess I could have googled it but still, thank you

can you do this in iOS?

No thanks. Depth is UIs belongs in the early 2000's. Can't believe it took so long to die off in the first place.
Sure it's better to mix data and controls and make them look the same.

I guess this basically confirms iTunes won't be split up. What a bummer.
iBooks is such a great app, why can't they do that with Music, Videos, and Podcasts?
I practically gave up on iBooks: I think I've never encountered such a slow and crash prone application from Apple. I just have to use it sometimes, when an iOS update seemingly randomly deletes books and PDF that I must restore from my Mac.

Let's not forget one of the last apps Scott Forstall's team gave us was the horrendous podcasts app:

iTunes became and more bloated years ago. It's a little unfair to blame UI designers when they have an impossible task (and yes iTunes has its own team of software engineers and UI designers). They also had an impossible task with Apple Music which is probably why it's getting a redesign only one year later.

Suuuure hope they're not getting rid of the Column Browser. It's the only way I browse my library.

Man you just freaked me out! Except the occasional playlist I too use my library 99% of the time in Column browser. However looking at the new View menu it in fact IS/WILL BE gone! The views in the sidebar are the column options...

Looks like I'll remain on iTunes 11 for a bit longer than I wanted (major pain after I messed up my iPhone 6 with a 9.3 beta and can't sync iOS 9 with it any longer...perhaps time to put my trusty iPod 5th gen back to work )

...A persistent sidebar located on the left side of the app is being added, which will make it easier to access different portions of an iTunes Library like specific songs or albums....

"being added"???

um, you mean like the one that we had forever that Apple took away when they "cleaned up" the interface?

I'll be surprised if this happens, since Apple lately seems to take great pleasure in removing usability features in favor of creating sterile, unfriendly interfaces. But if it's true, great. Now if we could just get scroll bar arrows back in OS X, we'll be all up-to-date and ready for 2006!

Refinement ?
It was refined prior to iTunes 10, then bloatware & blandness (flat design) took over.
Now it needs separation between Store, Streaming & CMS. A bit like on iOS, where you have a separate iTunes store & music app, but more decluttering is needed on the OS X iTunes.
100% right. Not just the UI but iTunes seems to be a resource hog. Have you tried iTunes on an older PC?

Hopefully this will make iTunes be able to maintain its scroll position once again. Currently it has the annoying habit of scrolling back to the top every damn time you edit metadata or modify a playlist in edit mode. Speaking of which – how about letting us open playlists in a separate window again? That was kind of useful. And already implemented.

I can't believe this works in iTunes 1 but not in iTunes 12:

"Burn CD" lol... Can't believe I'm saying this, but I miss the brushed aluminum look.

Sounds good for the most part, however what's with that "simplifying menus"?
Whenever Apple made something "simpler" in recent times I've found it came at the cost of functionality.

Also, drop-down menu for switching sections?
Jesus Christ...

Guess they try so hard to still make it look different from a formerly splendid interface that they intentionally mess up parts of the GUI to not blatantly remind everyone of the back rolling.

That or they really lost all feeling for sensible design.

So basically they make us now do two clicks to swap between categories. Unless the category you want to go to is next to the one you're on then, then one click of the arrow will change it.

Why not go back to the way it worked best by putting the categories in a list back in the sidebar? The sidebar has so much wasted real estate to begin with.

I'll be skipping this update until the people designing this learn how to design a proper UI.

Am I dreaming? Has Jony been sent to retirment? :D iTunes finally getting back the persistent sidebar? So maybe only some more waiting (2 or 3 version) and I can finally switch from iTunes 10.7… ;)

I hope so. I'd kinda like to get an iPhone SE, but I wont be able to interface that with my main computer because it's still running iTunes 10.7. I would have to use my laptop (which is running the current iTunes because it's on El Capitan) -- but my music library is not on the laptop because the hard drive is too small. I just listen to my music library either on the desktop machine or on the laptop through a shared library on my NAS.

Persistent sidebar - good.
Media selector dropdown - don't see the point. Put them back in the sidebar if you're bringing it back, duh!

I still want multiple windows back for easy and enjoyable playlist creation.

I also want the sidebar artwork viewer back. Again, if you have the sidebar back there is no good reason to not have that available, plus it was always so much easier to add artwork with a single drag and drop on the selected items than having to get-info, then switch to the artwork tab first like you have to now.

I like the little icons... having a drop down menu means more clicks for simple navigation :/

I also like being able to sign into the iTunes store from any screen - with the little icon to the right of the search bar...

I wish they would offer an option.. I quite like being able to change between the different sections of iTunes without a drop down menu.. Wasn't the drop down menu in iTunes 11 to change between categories, but you could also have the old fashioned side bar if you wanted?

I cannot wait for the WWDC!

Tim Cook to start shouting: Developers Developers Developers Developers! Deveeeelopers... Deveeeelopers....

Hearing a Longhorn filling the landscape of this beautiful Vista of the future innovation.

I hope DLLs will make their way to OSX 10.12

Fingers crossed! Exciting times for Apple!

Is it me or does the UI look pretty much exactly the same as it did before??? Never really had a problem navigating iTunes so whatever.

I thought the sidebar was always there, just hidden by default?

Really? Because so far, I can't find seem to find it in the iTunes menu.

In any case, I don't really care for the sidebar any way; I things the way they are right now (it can always be improved, though).

Thank goodness. Hopefully they do this to the incomplete Disk Utility service too and return it back to normal instead of "iTunes'ing" it up and destroying it like they did in El Capitan. Its not even complete, I'm not sure how that ever passed for deployment in the first place.
