On the subject of AAC in iTunes I believe you would find decoding it is supported through QT6. Not positive on that one but I have a hunch that's why you can play things in the AAC format.

Don't expect an encoder in iTunes too soon though as it costs money to add. If you want that get a QT6 Pro Key. Don't re-encode mp3s to mp4s though. As has already been pointed out there is no point. You already have the inherent loss from compressing it to mp3 and then you will lose more quality going to mp4. If you have the originals then encode them to mp4 otherwise you are stuck with mp3s.

Yes, Quicktime6 Pro will do all your encoding. Also yes, the reason that iTunes can play AAC is that it is iTunes is integrated with Quicktime.

New Visualizer graphics??

I may be imagining it, but I think there are new Visualizer patterns (or were they in v3.0 and I just wasn't paying attention?):D

I was wondering the same thing.... Not to mention an AAC converter. I want to convert all my mp3's to AAC's to clear up some HD space. Even if I am only using 12 Gigs. I guess we will just have to wait.

To answer my own question, it would only make sense to have AAC encoding in iTunes if the files could play on the iPod. So hopefully it is in the works.

I don't know if it was on this board, but somebody has suggested that Apple may require the purchace of QT Pro to encode AAC in iTunes. I don't know if I'd like that path, but I may be willing to pay for it.

When you turn visuals on but don't go full-screen, there's now a button in the upper-right corner that lets you specify some options ... the frame rade, song info, OpenGL, and faster/rougher display.

I don't remember seeing this in previous versions ... then again, I might have just missed it before.

It's been there for a while.

It's not new. ;)
