Should work fine if you use two user accounts like you're expected to. The iPod is an extension of the user account library, and the software expects that the user would want to listen to ALL their music on ALL their iPods. If you can't do that for whatever reason, fall back to separate playlists.

Not sure what you mean by "expected to do," but it turned out not to be a problem after all. The iPod Updater put independent podcasting options on each device. I set one for podcasting and turned off podcasting in the other one. Sweet.

*sigh* I'm very disappointed with this update. iPodderX has some very useful features mixed with a great many annoyances, so I was really eager to start using iTunes for my podcasts instead. And, yes, subscribing to podcasts is much easier with iTunes, and finding them in the iTunes directory is a lot faster and easier than any of the other directories I've looked at. But subscribing to them is pointless if I can't find them easily when I want to listen to them, or if I have to search through the Podcast playlist with all the old listings (I do save a few podcasts post-listening, so I can't let it delete automatically) every day just to see which have new episodes. So until podcasts show up properly in smart playlists, I'll have to stick with iPodderX. And in the meantime, I have to lose yet another of my precious "lines at the top of the screen" to a function I won't use because iTunes won't let you sort playlists with the ones you use most frequently at the top.

Nice work. Thanks.

Very interesting to say the least. Great find, thanks.

Although I'm not overly enthused with some of Apple's latest works, I love the innovation and that they continue to try, even if I personally don't always prefer the products. I hope these "finds" can be reality and we get some new cool and innovative products sometime soon.

iTunes is becoming quite the workhorse, adding all these new features and syncing so many things through one program. It is really nice that they are adding features yet simplifying an interface at the same time :)

More stuff found. A Huge Source Icon of the purchased music. Added the image names so people can also see them for themselves using Themepark

Wow

Can't believe all the whingeing and moaning in this thread. I was expecting people to be swapping their favourite Podcasts by now!

Wake up people. Apple have updated their FREE music application with a new feature - a whole bunch of FREE media to download and listen to on the app or on your iPod. If you're not interested in Podcasts I really don't think it's that hard to ignore the little icon in the left-hand column. Credit where it's due. Apple has done another super-slick job here. It's also in its infancy. Who knows how popular the home-publishing idea will be? Not me, and I bet not anyone else at this point. So maybe it's not perfect on day one. But guess what - this is software - it can evolve. Amazing.

As for the iPod updates, well Apple is simplifying its product line. Big deal. Is anyone's life worse off? Nope.

Stop whingeing people. More candy will be coming soon. You're behaving like spoiled brats!!

Rant over - and breathe, 2, 3, 4 :)

yeah, won't work with my shuffle... how could all these issues not have been discovered prior to release? the podcast library still isnt working consistently, some downloads (most, in my experience) aren't working... i don't really think there is any excuse for the quality, or lack of, with this update.

Those feeds are dying under the crush. Remember, when you add a podcast....even from the iTMS directory, it's getting the enclosure from the podcast producer. For example. Adam's are hosted up on Podshow as are Dawn and Drew. The Linux Link Tech Show would be hosted on http://thelinuxlink.net and so forth. All of the additonal users plus the ones still using the traditional iPodder, iPodderX, and Bashpodder will put a strain on alot of these feeds. This "problem" is not a problem with iTunes....it's just that podcatching has gotten a lot more popular....almost overnight!

older ipods

Am I missing something or is there no podcast support for any ipod older than the clickwheel?

iTunes 4.9 has brought most of my favorite podcast host servers to their knees. I cant download a single one.

Its great that iTunes has made podcasting so popular, it should also implement a sort of Bit Torrent approach for distributing Podcast within iTunes. That would allow users to download podcast shows from other iTunes users that have already downloaded the show, rather than from the original podcast server, reducing the crunch and cost on the podcasters servers saving them considerable amounts of money.

Making P2P available within iTunes for just Podcast would be amazing, and would help further truly free armature podcasting

So it's new for Apple. It's not new in general or even for Mac users, so if it doesn't do anything useful for you, why should you be excited about it? Apple has nothing to do with the media -- the podcasts were already freely available, so why should they get credit for that? Day one was quite some time ago, so, yeah, I expect Apple, which is supposed to be the home of slick innovation, to be a little slicker over something that they hyped. There's no excuse for mp3 files not to show up in Smart Playlists when they will if you download them with any other client. Absolutely, give credit where it's due -- and with this update, Apple has done nothing new to get credit for. The makers of the podcasts and the original podcast clients are the ones who deserve the credit. All Apple did was open a window for people who hadn't been curious enough to look for podcasts before.

Well put. I think many people are seriously misinformed and think that Apple invented pocasting or something... Nothing could be further from the truth.

Additional feature in 4.9

iTunes 4.9 will let you extract the .m4a from the .mov's downloaded from iTMS. I don't know if this is a new feature, but I haven't seen it documented anywhere. Select a movie, then click "convert selection to AAC" and it will automatically extract the audio from the video in AAC format. Whoop!

Apple invented podcasting, as well as MP3 players and getting music online by downloading. Right? ;)

A poster on the jhymn forum reports that there are no problems with iTunes 4.9 and "scrubbed" (de-drm'ed) files. He did not test whether jhymn can still retrieve keys from Apple's keyserver.

BTW the (iods) atom mentioned earlier actually is required to be part of the AAC format. It has nothing to do with drm. If you do a google search, you'll see the general consensus was that while they initially thought that was the problem (regarding when iTunes 4.7.1 broke jhymn), it turned out to be a red herring.

NOTE: I am not advocating the removal of Apple's DRM wrapper. I'm just posting this information as an FYI.
As a jhymn user that simply wants his music to be accessible to how I listen to it, I'll be finding out if my DRM free files will work after I do the 4.9 upgrade tonight.

I've been anxious to get going with the podcasting support of iTunes and decided I can't wait any longer.

I'll post my results.

Sucess. The update to iTunes 4.9 works with Jhymn 0.8.3

I think the key is to have it all working before you do the 4.9 update.

Regardless, I'm a happy camper. :)
