i don't know if anyone else has seen this but according to this boingboing.net article, everytime you double-click a song in iTunes with the Ministore open - it sends out what that song and artist is and updates the Ministore with other songs by that artist. in short, Apple has turned iTunes into spyware.
It shouldn't be long before somebody studies the data on the network and tells us whether or not it does this when the MiniStore display is turned off.

Edit: It's already been done. iTunes does not transmit tune information when the Ministore is not visible.

The two AirPort Expresses are running "Apple Base Station V6.2" according to AirPort Admin Utility. I think that is the current version, but am checking to see.

Both play music fine, interact with the AE base station fine (via join existing network), but I don't see the option to play over both at once. I did reset one of the expresses and started over from the beginning to make sure it wasn't something like that and it is the same too. Odd.

I found it. I found an updater at http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ that didn't seem to be downloaded with the previous update.

That was the problem. The updater is v 6.3 and the current version installed is 6.2. Updating to 6.3 gives the "multiple speakers" option.

The key is not to rely on "Software Update" to let you know whether or not everything has the current version.

[edited so that it had the full solution.]

Found it - it's the OSS 3D Plugin. Remove it & iTunes will work fine. Come on Apple, last time it was Sizzling Keys, now that - what's up? Gawd, it feels like Windows...

Thanks BB, I was about to go crazy on the poor little iBook! Now it works!

No, its just doing what the ministore is meant to - show other songs by the same artist.

Sounds like they are getting heated over nothing.

Apple definitely should ask for the users permission to send the data, at least after the first launch. It would have been so easy for Apple to do it properly. I don't understand why they start with that Sony-like b***s**t. There's absolutely no need to do that stuff.

And by the way: If we do push back now against that invasion of privacy, the less likely Apple will do it again later.

Same. I'm playing through my Mac and two Expresses at the moment. :)

It's just what I wanted, and one more step towards the mac media hub.

However, I'm getting some interesting sync loss issues between the airport and the iMac once it's been running for a few tracks- seems that they haven't built any recovery routines into it yet, or thought to put a re-sync on track change.

Is this noticeable on multiple airport expresses, or just between the ae and 'macs ?

Disk Utility Does Not Work

After downloading and installing iTunes 6.0.2 and Quicktime 7.0.4, certain apps no longer work.

It's been a practice of mine to repair permissions on my hard drive after a major software update. Well this time Disk Utility fails with the following messages:

Disk Utility Internal error
Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and launch Disk Utility.
I select quit then:
Operations still in progress
Disk Utility still has some operations in progress.
Quitting in the middle of some operations can leave a disk non-operational.
Are you sure you want to quit?

If I select Don't Quit then Disk Utility simply stalls.

I emailed Apple about this. I've never, ever received any response whatsoever from Apple from other emails I've sent them, so I'm not holding my breath.

It's pretty clear to me that this iTunes and/or Quicktime upgrade has damaged my computer somehow. I'm running OS X 10.3.9 on an eMac 1GHz machine. This is the first time something like this has happened so I guess I've been very lucky until now.

If anyone has ideas for a fix I'd sure appreciate it.

Anyone else here notice that when you control-click on a video it gives you the option of converting it to iPod format?

I don't have QT Pro so it must be a system-wide thing. Woohoo!!

I don't think I'll use it but that's a pretty cool addition, thanks Apple.

But in my opinion, the bigest improvement is...

Okay I just fired up iTunes and guess what I found: if you are playing music through Airtunes, in the little pulldown menu where you choose the remote speaker you can choose Multiple Speakers and play through more than one at a time!

I am currently listening to music through both my Airport Express and my computer at the same time and in-sync with each other.

I don't know if it has to do with the Airport updates I did earlier today (which were realeased on January 3rd but I never saw until I was on the Apple download page trying to get the OS 10.4.4 update), but it works well and is, I think, a major new feature for iTunes/Airtunes.

Mentioned in another thread that this really rocks IMO. Would have been greater when I owned my TH, but even being able to use my AEX's t stream music "equally" through my apartment is a great addition!

I updated itunes and QT with the updates released today and there is no reference to a mini store in my itunes at all. even tried the command shift m and still nothing. can someone post a screen shot. Also, apple has pulled the QT update and posted a 7.0.1 re-installer. Maybe that has something to do with it.

edit. got it. in the regular library. I thought it was something in the music store itself like the Just For You section. Yah, that sucks. Don't need that.

For me it was just clicking at the link at the bottom of the iTunes Store....

guys, just press the 4th button to the right at the bottom...

and they pulled the 7.0.4 updater...

why???

That doesn't sound good....

when i try to update iTunes it comes up with a window that says 'Please quit iTunes before beginning this update.' and i quit itunes, and it pops up again, and i click ok, then after about 10x i get frustrated and force quit the update. then i start the update - i don't even install it yet, and it pops up with this BS.
grr.

I know you can turn them off, but if you option-click they cross link to YOUR library instead of to the store

I didn't know about this, thanks for the tip. (Even though you were actually just looking for tip to get it to behave differently, but I don't mind option-clicking.)

As for the MiniStore, I was upset at first because I wasn't asked if I wanted it there or not. I couldn't figure out at first how to turn it off, so I'm sure many other users will feel the same way ( sounds like some of you already have ). Why under "Edit" and not under "Preferences" or possibly "Window"?!

BUT I actually find it pretty useful. There have been many times when I've been curious if iTunes has such or such artist that I have in my library, or if they've expanded what's available for a given artist on the Store since last I looked. The MiniStore is quicker/more convenient than pressing the arrows it seems.

I am a little concerned about privacy. It's obvious iTunes is sending data to the Store, otherwise it couldn't have the current artist show up in the Mini Store window. It's what Apple does with this info that's important. If they don't keep it, then I don't care. If they do keep it and use it to determine buying patterns (like the Just For You thing I shut off), then I do care and will be none too pleased...

I'm playing on my Mac and two Expresses and have been for hours and it's been fine sync-wise. I have pretty good reception to them all and I'm not using up a lot of bandwidth on the network (just the internet) so maybe that's why it's working for me. :)

Thanks yojitani!

Although I'm running Tiger and most of the problems I've heard about are in Panther (10.3.9), I'm holding off on the QT download.

Hope this helps.
YOJ

I reverted back to QT 7.0.1, but found that iTunes won't display videos that I purchased with anything less than QT 7.0.3, so I reverted to that version:

Install Quicktime 7.0.3

My failed apps now work except for Disk Utility, which still does not work correctly. Apparently QT 7.0.4 wreaked permanent damage to my hard drive. Everything but Disk Utility is working now, however.

This is excellent. I wonder why it required the AE firmware update, though? I also didn't get the Multiple Speakers option until I upgraded the firmware. It seems like this would be purely an iTunes feature, but maybe the AE is sending back info for synchronization purposes.

On a not so nice note, this feature really hit home just how bad my Apple Pro Speakers sound! They are just terrible in comparison to my home theater, especially when you hear them side by side. Oy!

Apple needs to extend this feature so that any local computer running iTunes can also act as an Airport Express and play synchronized music. Kind of like sharing, but pushing audio from the primary computer out to others, rather than pulling as it is now. But then I wouldn't have to buy more Airport Expresses for other rooms with computers, so Apple probably won't do it...

More importantly... I'd like the ability to send DVD audio through AirTunes while watching the image on my 20". AirTunes support needs to be built into DVDPlayer. Obviously, there are some sync/lag issues that need to be resolved, but the Multiple Speakers option seems to be a step in the right direction.

Oh, absolutely! I'd like to see Airport Express added as an option for the system sound output device so that any app could use it. I suppose there's an inherent delay in there, so synchronization could only happen if the app were aware, as you suggest with DVD Player. Maybe QuickTime could handle sync transparently. Wouldn't that be cool?

On 10.4.4 and QT 7.0.4 and F4M 2.0.1 is the ultimate combo. My collection of WMVs never played better and also streaming WMVs are so much better. This is awesome. I hated WMP. So crappy on Mac. I really love this.

Personally, I'm annoyed by the new ads (that's what the MiniStore is) appearing by default without my permission.

I agree, the adds are very annoying:mad: . Apple should have not made the defult. It made be usfull to some users but not for me, i guess you could allways turn it off (and the music store).

I don't really like the traffic lights on the mini mode but I'll probably live with them all the same... At least they only go like this when the curser is nearby.
I'm usually really observant, but I never realized that the buttons are the same layout/colors as traffic lights. I guess you learn something new everyday on MR. :)

Depending on which country you live in and whether or not the iTunes window is minimized!

Come to think of it, usually all of the "traffic lights" on Mac windows are off at the same time, or all of them are on (enabled) at the same time. That's not the way traffic lights work! Real traffic lights (typically) use three combinations out of the 8 possibilities:

Trafficight.gif

Now if we include all possible combinations of on, off, slow blink, and fast blink, we can have those buttons distinguish 64 different states of the window. And drive you crazy at the same time!
