Why adopt the awkward middle child?

A) there are slot loading drives on the market that arent really that expensive
B) why put the support right in there if its not in the plans?
a) show me
b) huh?? that doesnt make any sense... just because the GPU suports the decoding of the video doesnt mean it has support.
What i meant by B is why would they just now officially put it in their documentation as you can see at the top of the page if they dont have something in the works. Im not by any means saying were seeing Bluray next week or anything, but from what the evidence points to its deffinatly in the works.
aahhh ok i see what you mean... however that paragraph doesnt necessarily mean that they are going to use BR media directly, that could mean that they might start ripping BR movies and putting them on itunes (as an example).
AH! VERY good point. I guess well just see what happens.

But doesn't iTunes already have HD downloads? Or is that just for tv shows and media other than movies?
A quick google search found an external slot loading SONY blu ray with the same DVD writing capabilities as a superdrive for less than £90. Apple charge nearly that for the slot loading USB superdrive designed for the Macbook Air!
The first thing Apple will probably do is use standard superdrives with blu ray READ support. Any GPU capable of decoding blu ray will take care of playback.
It doesn't seem too unlikely that we'd see at least READ support this year in some model of mac.
Imagine a nice 24" iMac with core i7 CPU, 512Mb GPU and a slot load superdrive with blu ray playback just in time for Christmas? I'm sure steve jobs has if that's possible.
Didn't Jobs say that blu-ray would die quickly along with optical media. I don't think there will ever be a MB with blu-ray
I think you're spot on flopticalcube - it could well be time. Now I wonder how long before iMac's and Mac Pro's will ship with Blu-Ray Players.![]()
Although Macs don't come with BluRay drives, can one add such a drive to a Mac and have it work? Anyone adding an optical drive to a Mac Pro in the near future?
Perhaps someone using another manufacturer's PC that has a BluRay drive can try it out on Windows.

How does this work? What does itunes have to do with BlueRay or even DVD for that matter. Itunes does not play DVDs. It should. That would make more sense then DVDplayer. Also it'd be great to be able to import DVDs the way you import CDs.
Are we thinking this means BlueRay and DVD will eventually play in itunes?
It's not in mine...and as far as I can tell, Gracenote doesn't carry DVD or Blu-Ray info. Nice try though.
This to me sounds like they do. Im hoping for some Blu-Ray support in SL, but I in no way expect Blu-Ray drives to come soon.
And if optical discs are going to go extinct, what will replace them? Some new interface thats ultra-thin and ultra-fast? Id love that

lol im sorry, but i have high hopes.. and even my hopes arent that high... yours are just outrageous. im sorry but that sort of machine will not be brought out by apple in time for christmas.
i HIGHLY doubt that we will see a read only BluRay drive, it just doesnt make any sense.. apple will no doubt charge 300 of your pounds for it too..
oh p.s. did your quick google search yeild a slot loading burner that will fit in the laptops?? i.e. 9.5mm
flash drives maybe?? wont get damaged as easily and are MUCH MUCH cheaper![]()
I would assume flash drives, but what interface? I would guess something very thin, about 3/4 the length of a DVD long. Maybe a drive would be 1" wide? But for that to hold up to 64GB... is that even REMOTELY possible
