Wired vs. Wireless

Hello everyone,

I, too, had the same problem and ended up with senior tech support with Apple. They were unable to resolve the issue and pointed to my router as the issue. Here was my situation:

1 - I consolidated my network to my Quest Modem/Router/Wireless Access Point
2 - My two MacBooks (wireless) could home share between one another
3 - My two PC desktops (wired) could not share between MacBooks or vice versa.

Somehow iTunes home share is not recognizing the fact that my wireless and wired connections are the same (even though they have the same IP prefixes).

I decided to plug my old wireless access point into the Qwest device and...voila - everything worked just fine.

I do not think this is a bug in my router, but in iTunes software (I have v 9.1).

I will be copying Apple on this e-mail. Hopefully they can figure this one out. It took way too much time out of my afternoon to troubleshoot!

home share and wireless

I have same the problem. PC (wired) to netgear router, laptop (wireless) to same netgear router and i cant use home shares, the icon just vanishes as soon as i enable it. Connect laptop to the router with a cable and it works ! Both machines on same IP network just doesn't like wireless ? Any ideas anyone ?

dissapearing home share - resolved

See previous post - home share not working between wired PC and wireless laptop . Upgrade of netgear router firmware has resolved this issue.

It does work between wired and wireless! I have been trying for two days and reading post but nothing worked so I gave up on it. 5 minutes I was doing stuff on my ipod (i have itunes on my laptop) and I saw a shared library on my itunes (the house computer which is wired). I don't know how it works but I am not gonna change a thing! It works when you don't need it too!

Help

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to do this home sharing thing.
When turning on Home sharing, i logged in with my account.
Once i've logged in it tells me home sharing is now on.
But if i look to the left hand column under the "shared tab" all i see is "home sharing" and nothing else.
My so called "shared library" doesn't seem to appear at all.

Please help.

thanks.

connection properties

SolitaryBG,
where are the connection properties in WIN7 to perform the fix you suggested??

Go to Control Panel and click on Network and Sharing Center.
Then on the left you click on Change adapter settings.
Now you should be able to see all your network connections. Right click on the desired on and then Properties. Look for the Protocol there.

But I think the AppleTalk Protocol is not on Windows 7 cause I didn't have to add any Protocols on my Win 7 PC only on the WHS PC.

The same thing happened to me and this is how i fixed it:

1. turn OFF home sharing on both computers
2. turn ON the home sharing on the computer that you will be taking the music, etc... from
3. turn ON the home sharing on the computer that will be receiving the music, etc...
4. share the music, etc...

I'm having issues too.

I think it has to do with my internet router or something, like a firewall in it or something? I have been having issues with home share for months now, and it has been driving me crazy. I went to a friends house and it worked like a charm! I did everything right from the beginning, but it doesn't work at my house on my laptop or when my sister brings over her laptop. My sister uses the same wireless internet, and we tried doing this at her house too and it didn't work there either. But it worked at a friends. What is wrong?! Someone please help.

Home Sharing icon disappears.

Home Sharing worked flawlessly until the new Qwest modem/router.

I re-connected my Netgear modem and Home sharing set up in split second.

Qwest's WiFi modems do not support Apple iTunes Home Sharing. I tried everything in set up mentioned on this thread with the Qwest modem and the Home Sharing Icon always disappears when clicking done after set up.
(A common problem I guess.)

The Netgear WiFi router Home Shares effortlessly. The Qwest Wifi modem/router simply will not.

Here is what I did.

Connect the Qwest router/modem as instructed.
Then connect the router that worked right to the Qwest router. Run them both.

A Minneapolis paper did a story on Qwest routers not working with iTunes.

itunes failure april, 2010

was able to share itunes from pc to mac and play through airport. Suddenly, in early April, was not able to do this. Had and have same issue, i.e after home sharing install, upon clicking done, both the pc and mac lose the home sharing icon and can not share. Tried mac powerbook to powerbook using ethernet and wireless and could share itunes. many hours of expert calls with Apple, only one person went down the right algorithm. seems to be an issue in PC running windows xp home, which I can not isolate. Belkin router works for mac to mac wireless sharing.

Multiple notes now on line note same problem.

to this point, have done all the recommended things and followed all described procedures. have upgraded to itunes 9.1 on machines and now 9.2 on pc, and still no luck

Would love a solution!

Another thing that helped me was I unshared my library's, logged out, deauthorized my computers and quit itunes. Then started it all back up again. Only this time I did not share or have iTunes look for shared library's on the network.

Thanks!!! I have Qwest so I am sure that is what the problem is. I've been away and haven't had a chance to try what you suggested, but now that I know someone with the same problems as me I know that it will work. Thank you soooooo much!!

make sure all computers are in the same subnet

I banged my head on this one for a bit. Here's what I found that fixed
my sharing issues after upgrading to iTunes9.

Mac OSX running iTunes 9.2.1(5) on both computers.

System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP/IP

For example:

Computer1:
--------------
IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.248

Computer2:
-------------
IPv4 Address: 192.168.1.5
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.240 <=== Needed to be changed to...

Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.248

This is assuming you are manually configuring your network and that your network/subnet mask is 255.255.255.248.

Solution !!!!

To fix that issue simply disable the IPv6 protocol on the network interface on all computers that you trying to connect via iTunes.

That can be find under the properties on the network device that you are using to connect to your local network/internet.

I will recommend that you will restart your machines after making that change.

On both recreate Home Share in iTunes - switch it off and on.

That will make it work :)

Good luck

Attention

Here's my case: I just got a new mac laptop but already had an itunes account on another windows computer. When I tried to do Home Sharing, I had the same problem of the "sharing" column disappearing when I pressed done. thats when i found this forum, i also visited tutorials, and trouble shooting pages. no luck. until i reread one of the posts on this forum (i think i found it here i'm not sure) but what it told me to do was to (and sorry I couldnt figure out how to do this on windows :( ) when in iTunes, GO TO THE ITUNES TAB AT THE TOP AND CLICK PREFERENCES. THEN CLICK THE SHARING TAB/PAGE THINGY. WHEN THERE, MAKE SURE THE FIRST 2 BOXES AND THE FIRST BULLET ARE CHECKED OFF.!!!!! Honestly, I have no idea if this was the thing that did it, but a few minutes later I looked at my windows computer screen and under "Sharing" was my laptop's itunes' name(if you go to preferences again and "general" thats where you'll find the name of your itunes). When i looked back at my laptop, there under "sharing" was the name of my windows computer's itunes' name (if that doesn't work, shut down your computer and turn it back on, it should work then). Click on the "sharing" name and up will pop your library for that computer. I couldn't figure out how to drag certain playlists at a time but you can drag artists at a time. Or you can click "settings" and check off which library you want to transfer. I really really really hope this helps :D good luck! (sorry it was so long!)

I had the same problem on tunes 10 (Icon was there but wouldn't pull up remote shared music then icon goes away). Using a MAC and PC..

The thing that fixed this for me (after verifying what others suggested) was to temporarily disable the VMWare and VPN network protocols for the network connection I was using (in my case on the PC).

Not sure why this worked but I suppose they were somehow filtering the traffic for the network connection. Not everyone will have these protocols associated with your network connection...

On the PC: control panel >> network connections >> Right click active network connection (in my case 'Local area connection') and choose properties. Uncheck everything except for "Client for Microsoft Networks", "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks", and "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)".

As soon as I did that and clicked the share on the MAC all of the itunes items from the PC popped up and I could transfer them to my MAC.

I wouldn't be surpised if the only protocol you need is TCP/IP.. I would test that but my itunes library transfer from the PC to the MAC is going to take several days to complete...

Again, this may not be the case for many people but I didnt see it mentioned elsewhere and it was the only thing that solved the problem for me...

Oh yeah,, and if you do uncheck something just know it may disable or break something else... IE: if you disable VPN protocol then your VPN is not going to work until you reverse the changes (re-check them)... To be safe you should probably reverse any changes you make after testing to see if this helps..

Good luck!

This is the right answer!!! It can be made even more simple:
In iTunes --> Advanced --> Turn On Home Sharing
In order to share your entire library with all the other macs (and I guess PC's) in your house, make sure you use the same account (only one) for the "Turn On Home Sharing" feature.

Once you've done that, all your macs (PC too, I guess) will be able to drag and drop from each other's libraries.

***This is an old thread, but it ranked #1 for my google search, so I'm updating!

Ok, incase anyone is still a little foggy: you don't have to "authorize" every computer with every iTunes account. Even if you did, it wouldn't work!

YOU DO have to login through here: iTunes --> Advanced --> Turn on Home Sharing
Using the same account for all computers. It's an easy fix. No need to overcomplicate!

(good game & have fun)

OK, here's what I did:

This works on 2 (and probably more) Macs—

without messing around with any port settings
with OS X Preferences, Sharing, File Sharing turned OFF on BOTH computers
with iTunes Preferences, Sharing, "Share my library on my local network" turned OFF on BOTH computers

(apologies for documentation overkill—just being thorough)

1. Turn OFF Home Sharing on BOTH computers (this is NOT done in Preferences; instead, go here: Advanced, Home Sharing)

2. Make sure BOTH machines are authorized for BOTH iTunes accounts (Store, Authorize Computer)—i.e., if each has its own iTunes account

3. You do NOT have to be logged into the same account on both computers; each computer may stay logged into the iTunes store under its own login

4. For sanity's sake on this part, check to make sure of this—i.e., that each machine is logged into the store with its own store account (Store, View My Account, check to see ID is correct)

5. NOW turn Home Sharing back on (Advanced, Home Sharing) on each computer, but use ONE account to log into Home Sharing on both (or all) computers

6. DON'T WORRY, this does not "flip" the login ID for a particular computer's iTunes Store connection to the ID being used for Home Sharing

7. On each computer now you should see a "Home" icon with the shared library in the left-hand sidebar

8. Open the shared library and drag and drop as desired

The bottom line seems to be this:

1. Keep each computer logged into the store with a separate iTunes ID (if you need to)
2. Get all the computers authorized for all available IDs
3. Use ONE ID to log into Home Sharing on ALL computers

You will of course ONLY see the Home Sharing icon pop up if both computers are on, with iTunes open on each

You'll know that this whole thing is working if the shared library listed on the left has the correct "Home" icon (and not the blue, "shared" icon that shows up when Preferences, Sharing, "Share my library on my local network" is turned on—yes, this is the one you see in Internet cafes filled with Mac users)

I've tested the above over and over again, even completely rebooting my two machines (they have different iTunes accounts), and it still works. This is running Leopard on both machines.

I've been trying to connect all evening

Have followed all the instructions on this forum and itunes troubleshooting - do everything it suggests. Basically I've had to have get myself an IT degree!!
At some point I ended up having to restore factory settings - I don't know if this was the clincher but once I did this everything seemed to work.

I have also:
Allowed all network sharing options in the control panel network and sharing centre
Added UDP and TCP and IP address to the network settings go to properties/sharing tab/ tick box to allow other network users and add details as (see itunes internet connection sharing troubleshooting)
Allowed all on my firewall connections and
Changed itunes preferences to share my library on local network

Its worth persevering as now I can share all the different music on four different computers sound the house!
Hope this helps - best of luck

Disappearing Home Sharing!!

I've had a similar problem, but mine starts right from the beginning. I'm trying to link up a new Apple TV to my iTunes account on my MacBook Pro, so I turn on home sharing from the advanced menu in iTunes, but then as soon as I click done, the Shared icon disappears! It therefore doesn't allow me to link up with anything (Apple TV and Remote App for iPhone 4).:mad:

i was having this same problem and the solution was just a matter of not clicking on 'done'. pretty absurd i know!
