I sooo hope its true and that they'll have some promotoinal thing like "Drink, Win & Play" in the U.S.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think that's very likely in Aust. We've had the iTMS here in the UK for ages haven't had any promotions of the same scale yet.

What i'd like to see is one that involves drinking beer instead of cola...

I'm moving to Australia in Jan of 2006 for my Masters program, so this is great news. I just hope they have the store by then, otherwise I'd still be forced to use my US address and looset the exchange rate.

The last few reports on iTMS AU have been all sourced from other news sites. This one, we've got a very reliable source - so i'm 95% we'll have it end of April. :)
We shall see. I was chatting with somebody within Apple; the indications I have suggest that it's the Australian music industry, not Apple, holding it up. Apparently, the lawyers said industry has are a breed apart.

Meh. I can wait; too many other things demanding my finances right now.

Yeah, except because it's Aussie they'll need to make it schooners of VB or a Bundy, not Pepsi!

anyone know if this'd included new zealand?

cos, nz doesn't have apple NZ - just resellers, such as Renaissance and Magnummac etc

And i've tried buying from apple australia before with an email reply saying as long as its shipped to an address in australia... thanks (rolls eyes)

i've got my fingers crossed, but ain't getting my hopes up (again)!

crossed... crosss....sed.

Rennaissance won't want to get involved in this, but the fact that Apple doesn't have a presense in New Zealand shouldn't make a difference since all they need to do is allow New Zealand billing addresses on the Australian service.

Early speculation was that, when eventually launched, the Australian iTMS would be able to be used by New Zealanders, based on the fact that the recording companies in New Zealand are effectively just branches of their Australian counterparts.

I'm still a bit sceptical, but I guess iTMS will have to reach this part of the world at some stage in the future.

I'll agree with you on this one. It's my understanding that the Austrialian equivalent of America's RIAA is extremely anal, and the reason the Australian music store hasn't opened it is because they're being really picky about pricing, DRM, etc.

I mean, as I understand it, the recording industry is a huge business that makes billions of dollars on the sale of physical media (like CDs). Why would they want to potentially jeopardize those profits by allowing the downloading of songs over the internet? The RIAA was willing to take that "risk", however the Australian RIAA equivalent apparently has shown little interest in allowing online music downloads.

Yeah, I'm crossing my fingers for an NZ release. I'm actually cheating at the moment by using a US billing address, it'll be good to be able to buy stuff legitimately.

Hopefully there will be a 'prepay' option too - does the US store have this?

As Steve Jobs said in an interview recently "they (record execs) have no imagination." If I was them I would be jumping at the chance to go online. What is the cost of distribution of a file across the Internet? Pretty close to zero. It is an amazing opportunity to lower their distribution costs.

hmv already have an online music store don't they? i tried going there but it told me that macs were not allowed.

anyway i think it will be more like "itunes australia - at the end of the world". i'm not sure too many aussies will go for it, we've been getting raped by the music industry here for too long and much worse than overseas. the price of a cd down under is ridiculous, most of my cds cost about $30 - $35, i only get paid $10 an hour. i don't think many people are too willing to forgive and forget so easily unless we are given a really good deal. illegal downloading is out of control down here for a reason, we are all sick of being ripped off and feel like the record companies owe us something. since we have been given the opportunity a lot of people are just taking from them.

good point abc123, i too have been ripped off by high prices... CDs are (for my town) $24-45 for a single album....(then half of the songs are not good) This sucks.. where, i can either buy it second hand from Amazon Marketplace or feef it from the 'internets' ;)
i'd rather buy from iTMS tho for $0.99pt - much easier.

$1.45 or whatever is still over priced, <$1 would be a sweet spot. it isn't going to happen though :(

Has anyone else noticed that the "iTMS is not yet available in your country" message is no longer appearing? Or have I just inadvertantly changed a setting on my machine causing this to happen?

why the change from page 2 to the main page? just curious.

I would say because of Disko's post. He is the God of Appletalk, if a LOT more approchable than the Gods here. He has his ears to the ground, and will not let his source out (even on ATAU  ), which makes it more certain in my mind. I believe this may actually happen.

Maybe 28th April to coincide with ITMS birthday?

I was talking with some people at a label in Australia and April 28th was the date they gave me as the debut of the Australian I Tunes Store.

itunes.co.nz is currently registered to a guy in Dunedin who was originally planning to use it to provide iPod resources but he doesn't actually have anything hosted on it at the moment.

Unlike the .au namespace, the .nz namespace is a free-for-all which means that Apple cannot take possession of the domain name unless they obtain a court order (which would happen only in exceptional circumstances) or if the current owner surrenders it voluntarily. Interestingly, itunes.net.nz is not currently registered and I'm sure this guy would have got his hands on that one too if he were planning to bleed money out of Apple.
