I only purchased my MAC on Sunday. And this all happened because of this, I searched the web to find some answers.

You are a completely ignorant and frankly pompous person who feels I am having a dig at Apple in general, I AM NOT, I love my MAC, iphone and ipod I love Apple stuff and frankly dont feel the need to request your agreement on joining a new forum which I was before new to

I'm guessing that this is due to the numerous upgrades they're going to have to make for the Lion release. Even if Lion itself isn't that big, they have to also prepare to handle the onslaught of downloads coming from people redeeming their B2S vouchers when they buy the new hardware they've been waiting for.

If the rumors of a China Mobile iPhone & next generation iPhone in the coming months are also true, they can certainly expect a massive increase in mobile App Store usage as well.

Lulzsec also publicly pointed out a security hole that they were supposedly able to exploit about a week ago too, while it isn't likely that this is an attack, Apple could be responding to that security flaw.

That or someone really wants physical media for the Lion release and just took it way too far!;)

Couldn't it simply be the migration to that giant serverfarm in South Carolina? That must be one hell of an operation. And I guess they want to move the whole operation of iTunes store and iOS and Mac AppStore there before the Lion sale and iOS beta's with iTunes match. So that would have to be around now. It would seem bizarre that you could move such an inordinate amount of data without having outages.

DoS seems hysterical speculation at this point...

I'm thinking the same thing.

9to5 is getting an update that Lion will be posted at 1 AM UK time tonight. Isn't that 7PM ET in the US and 4 PM PT in the US. Those times do sound weird. I would think it would be a 10 AM launch PT so 1 PM launch ET and 7 PM launch UK. I guess we will find out soon enough. Their update was under this article but on the 9to5 site.

As to this downtime. If it was a hack why wouldn't they take down the stores the second they found out instead of waiting a few hours. I feel that a stress test is pretty understandable as the file is 4 GB and you will have tons of people downloading this. It will likely come from multiple server farms i.e Maiden, and the one in California. Possibly some other small places they might have rented. I think what Apple should have done is announced the date but it would be available at certain time. For example Thurs. July 14. 10 AM. So for each timezone when it turns 10 AM on July 14 thats when the portal opens for you. This way it wouldn't cause as much stress on the pipes as it would all at once.

Well even if its not today or tomorrow it will be in the next two weeks. We will get to see how well Apple planned for this. :)

I don't know why people keep claiming that it's down due to the release of Lion. Believe it or not, Lion isn't that big (file size) and Apple will probably just place it on the App Store like a normal app. I don't know why they would have to do anything fancy in order to put it on. The App Store is still going to work with Snow Leopard, but if this maintenance has to do with COMPATIBILITY with Lion, then that's an excuse. Not because Lion is going to launch soon. And the App Store works perfectly with Lion anyway, so it probably has nothing to do with Lion.

Lion is expected to be around 4GB in size. Apple will be releasing this in the App Store any time now and with millions of users waiting to download this I really don't see this as being no big deal. I think it is a big deal. I have a pretty fast network and it took me a while to download the GM Seed from the App Store when it was released and if you add millions more downloading this at the same time I think Apple really needs to be prepared. It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find that the preparation for lion caused some of these issues.

Interesting, I didn't realize there were widespread issues occuring, but that explains why I had trouble with the app store last night!

Man, the App Store on my iPhone was having a heck of a time loading anything for a few hours. Don't know if that's related.
I had the same problem last night. App Store within iTunes was working fine for me - and when I downloaded an app from my Mac, it started immediately on my iPhone so I'm not sure what the problem(s) is/were. Working fine now.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit to find that the preparation for lion caused some of these issues.
I have a Comcast 50/10 connection and get 6 mb downloads at best. The Lion betas usually took an hour to an hour and a half. Even if Apple uses Akamai etc to cache things locally, the first few days after release will be brutal, especially for the slower connections.

When has Apple ever released anything at midnight?

When has Apple ever released a new OS online only?

There's a first time for everything. I have no opinion on whether that would happen or not, but midnight release times for OL content would certainly not be unreasonable. That's when most of my college papers were due :)

I think it is in preparation of Lion

It could be a DDOS attack because of Lion. If I were a bad guy, I would choose the time of a big release to take Apple down. I can say, many of our servers were hit last night. The servers were on compleetly different networks with nothing to draw attention to them. Our network team was able to get the black hats (China, Russia and N. Korea) blocked and locked but our people are better than the ones at Apple.

This is interesting. Last night I had emails from apple saying my credit card details had been changed and that items had been purchased from a new device. So I logged in to iTunes to find pre paid credit gone and an app downloaded called texus holdem as well as in in app purchase had been made. So went to go change my password to notice that my credit card details had been removed!! - all without me knowing.

I really hope this isn't some kind of attack but this has coinsided very well with what happened to me last night (gmt 20.30 ish)

Will be cancelling my card today just as precaution and inresponce to reading this post

Strange, last night I got a free copy of texus holdem and a new credit card added to my iTunes account. I was wondering what happened.

Thanks Disturbedbob!

A physical copy wouldn't have gone down. Just sayin' Apple.

A physical copy would be apple specialized... they would need their own factory to manufacture the flash drives with the 4GB of data on it. A physical copy costs a heck of a lot more... Just Sayin' Atlantico

I don't believe this story at all. I have been able to log onto iTunes and the app store all day long. I just not tried it and it is still up and running.

Same thing here!

Although I can access iTunes then downloaded some updates, then I was on App Store too and bought the PDFEditor which sucks don't buy it. I felt how both store not very responsive when opening. Although iTunes is already not responsive as always, but last night is different. I'm hoping that this is not the same thing with PSN that would pissed me off. Then again if you get a free apps or gift cards from Apple that would be awesome!

Now we know why Apple shuts down their hardware store every time they add new product. They just do not know better. And now they will have to shut down App Store as well every time they need new app. :D
