I used to spent hours tagging, making the music library look pretty. Ever since I got Spotify I haven’t touched it. In fact I wiped my whole library and it’s been empty for a few years

Cabled synch is the only way to encrypt backups that Apple can’t read (they can read backups in iCloud).
That's hardly the point. If they wanted to provide encrypted iCloud backups as a replacement, they could.
The encrypted backup is the only way to store all data like passwords and make device restoration easy. It is also the only realistic way to deal with a backup/restore in the hundreds of gigabytes. Even on a gigabit fiber connection, it takes way too long to do a full backup and restore.

I expect it's being killed off.
Everyone else has already exited that business with the exception of Google. And Google themselves are transitioning away from matching cloud music with their new YouTube Music service.

This is horrible news! iTunes backs up my devices and been a iTunes Match subscriber since the beginning. All good comes to an end; it appears that Apple is forcing an all or nothing approach to subscription. Days of ownership is coming to an end...

If true, it would be one of the most misguided moves by Apple in recent memory. I can see it now ...

Sync 1 - Use Music app to sync music to your iOS device.
Sync 2 - Use TV app to sync movies and TV shows to your iOS device.
Sync 3 - Use Podcasts app to sync podcasts to your iOS device.
Sync 4 - Use Apps app to sync apps to your iOS device.

At least four separate sync operations to your iOS device to do what currently just takes one sync. (No mention of Books at all.)

What will be used to perform backups of your iOS devices? Maybe any of those apps will be able to do that, and will store them all in a common location, but the story makes no mention of that at all.

Match functionality? Some have been very dismissive of this. Big mistake, IMO. It’s not going anywhere, and will likely just be part of the Music app, if Apple actually does do this. Personally, if Match is removed, this would make it a lot easier for me to leave the Apple ecosystem, which would mean that I would also stop using all the Apple services that I currently have (Apple Music, Match, & 200GB iCloud Storage, and the 30% take they get from app purchases, etc.)

‘Music app’ is probably going to be a lite iTunes with the same horrible UX or probably worse, way more dumbed down and unusable. The problem isn’t the multi-function, it’s the design.
Cool story.
Actually the basic UI for the Music app already leaked, and it is exactly what iTunes currently isn't in terms of UI and Navigation, and exactly what it needs to be.

Not like you would know your as\s from a hole in the ground though.

What will happen to all the songs I bought on iTunes and all the songs I have in iTunes that I uploaded from a cd years and years ago? But I am having problems getting my library and playlists transferred to my new MacBook, so maybe they will come out with something that is easier.

I need it. I actually prefer to OWN the things I pay for. I understand that this generation is cool with renting or leasing, but I’m not. Ownership of anything is going away. No bueno.

I have a feeling those of us who want ownership and control of our music are going to have to resort to piracy again at some point.

I really don't want to do this; I like paying for my music. But the industry wants its damn subscription income. :(

I once posited that infinite unfettered access is indistinguishable from ownership to an end user. That perhaps 1st world consisted of owning of resources, but 0 World is simply access to resources.

Apple Music, with access that mimics ownership, would be a move towards that. yes, it all goes away if you end your subscription... but are you going to end your subscription? Will most people?

Music is not TV is not Podcasts.

I get their logic.

Agreement is not understanding.

hey apple,

instead of killing off itunes, how about reverting the look and feel to how it was before 2010.

then add the functionality for the devices and media it supports.

stop trying to make everything you build to have a post-2010 microsoft look and feel.

THANK GOD! They are finally getting rid of that garbage. My only concern is what will happen on the windows/PC platform. Will they release apps or possibly go to some kind of web app?

From this comment in the 9to5 article, it sounds like you would still be able to backup your iOS devices locally using the Music app.
How am I supposed to handle my iPhone on Windows 10? Is there a Music app coming for us too? Will they keep updating that bloated iTunes 12 with security improvements?

Match is a service that people pay for. Apple isn't just going to drop any services revenue.

Also, lol @ syncing. I haven't "synced" anything with iTunes in probably 6 or 7 years...just like everyone else, because there is no reason to. Syncing is definitely getting deprioritized as it rightly should be. I don't think it will be removed altogether, but simplified and made less prominent.

It's not infinite unfettered access, though. Even if you're willing to pay monthly forever, music can and has been removed from services like Apple Music and Spotify. And you do lose access to the songs even if you added them to your library.

Nothing can truly replace having your own unencrypted audio files of your music.

I, for one am all for this happening. I've thought iTunes was a bad name for software that does so much more. Simply making separate apps (TV, Music, Podcasts) will align more with the iOS apps. I've thought this since they got rid of iSync, a separate which used to sync your iPod to your Mac apps. Does anyone else remember iSync. They could bring this back for doing a hard-wired sync of the iPhone, iPod and iPad.
